Koh Samui Temples & Big Bhudda with Geoff Carter

Geoff Carter takes a look around the Samui Temples, Big Bhudda, & places of worship. Koh Samui in Thailand has many places of worship, and here are just two of those places.
Ko Samui, one of Thailand’s largest islands in the Gulf of Thailand, is known for its palm-fringed beaches circling coconut groves and dense, mountainous rainforest. It’s also home to luxury resorts, posh spas and a rowdy nightlife scene that often attracts a backpacker crowd. The 12m-tall golden Big Buddha statue at Wat Phra Yai temple is a local landmark.

Another good one Geoff,you could actually feel the peace and tranquility in the second temple truly stunning place,and not a bit of graffiti or litter about,love it. Oh bet your glad spider lady was not a beggar ,only joking Geoff,but i think those temples are truly amazing,and it really puts a perspective on the difference religion plays in these poorer countries than it does in the west,as everywhere you go no matter a shop or a bar,everywhere has a little shrine where they leave little gifts of food and drink. I was sitting at a bar in Pattaya on the beach rd one night,and these two homeless guys with a child walked up to the little bar shrine and picked up a bottle of beer from the shrine,and started drinking it while chatting to the staff,then just left on their merry way back across to the beach,truly amazing what People leave at the shrines.but truly a good outlook to life,to share with others less fortunate.

I'm not an expert on this by any means, but as I understand it SE Asia is the true melting pot of the Far East. Historically Chinese fleeing strife moved south bringing Buddhism with them. Indians fleeing to the east, during their own bouts of historical political upheaval, brought Hinduism. Then you'll find the whole water worship with the Naga and Lotus iconography, which originated in the area, mixed in there also. All this blending together of beliefs and iconography gives us the style of Buddhism we now see in these temples today that's Those who follow the religion tend to bring and leave food and drink for the happiness of deceased relatives and Buddha that some temples will bless then pass on as alms for the poor. I'm sure I'm not 100% correct on every aspect, but this is what I remember reading.

The statue is Guanyin (7.53), is the goddes of mercy. In China, she is highly regarded. With her thousand arms, she help relieve the sufffering of the people of China.

+Paul Hill only in parts Paul. I can still get a chang for 50 baht. food for 120 with rice, noodle soup from 50 baht. If you go the more popular bars etc expect over 100 baht a drink, lots of cocktail bars at just 69 baht. so its as dear or cheap as you like

Nice temples there Geoff :-) I do agree a lot of them are same same but if you look around there are some amazing ones to be found. If ever you get to Chiang Rai look for Wat Rong Khun, very impressive ;-) It was designed and funded by a famous Thai artist. It's just outside of the town.
