completely agree on the beyblade comparison with g3. if bakugan, an intermittent brand with somewhat flagging sales, tries to compete with beyblade, an apparently evergreen brand by a bigger company, they are absolutely going to lose. and, honestly, i think the flagging sales are their own fault for relying on so many reissues of the same molds. we havent had any new ultras since 2021, and the only new molds in legends are the novas. people who aren’t collectors like me are only going to accept so many repaints. basically, spinmaster has been presented their own grave like ebenezer scrooge, but have decided the problem is that the hole is not deep enough.

Ideas What they can do -instead of life decking, just make a separate main deck and life deck. Main deck contains the usual castable cards. Man I hope they make a proper TCG this time. I was so hyped when Battle Planet came out, I spent a stupid amount of money getting virtually all of Wave 1 and building a few decks for my friends and I to play. Then I tried keeping up with it and... there was just nothing for me to get. Newer sets were virtually impossible to find, I never saw any of the starter packs (the ones that came with a deck and 3 guys) after wave 2 and it felt like they'd just dropped the TCG idea entirely. I honestly wanted to have it be my primary TCG, but after a couple of months of seeing absolutely nothing but dust gather around the game, I just went back to yugioh and never found a reason to go back to Bakugan after that. I can get over the cost of it, but when I'm literally the only guy playing it in my whole zip code and I can't even buy the card packs in my country, I just can't justify it to myself. Spin Master: you tried. You got decently close to it working. You now no longer have to deal with the pandemic. Local card stores are back up and running. Please don't just make this a kid's game. Please give this project depth and make it enjoyable to everyone. And for the love of God just explore the ideas you have instead of spamming out a new mechanic every year! Even yugioh stopped doing that, and they were only adding a new mechanic once every three years! Let your players breathe and play with the stuff you put out. Also: make sure your stuff is available to the people that want to get it. Kohdok: thanks for following the journey of this brand, and let's hope it actually goes somewhere this time.

Good to see ya still kicking on KZbin Kohdok! I watched you frequently in the early years of the Reboot! Honestly, It's really sad to see bakugan reboot again. Especially since there's still an active community still who actively want to play the TCG, and don't want things to start over again. I've enjoyed everything that's been released (minus the blight that is cubbo) in the entire reboot, and things only seemed to be getting better (at least to me, I loved Legends reprinting some early BP molds). So it's just so sad to see them throw everything away for... this. I'll be shocked if any of this goes well for them, and I understand that this is a brand for children. But I don't want them to fail but it could very well be the end now, especially if the show continues to cater to young children, thier demographic has probably outgrown the terrible humor that the show has. Thanks for covering this though Kohdok, it's nice to see so many people indifferent about this because I don't see this going well at all. But I'd love to be wrong if it gives spin master the opportunity to do a 180 and go back to what works.
@digitalclown2008 Жыл бұрын
Idk why everyone talks about gimmicks when that's literally the point of toys. Toys have gimmicks. It just depends on if it's a good gimmick and if it was executed well. Battling tops obviously aren't a bad gimmick. They have been done successfully by multiple people. The concept of a card game that involves you constructing full cards based on the Bakugan you build is an AMAZING idea in my opinion. It's just a cool concept. I'm totally gonna check these out. Edit: I honestly get the impression that spinmaster knew they couldn't produce a card game and bailed. Balancing for a card game is difficult. I'd assume continued production of a card game is even more difficult. On top of that, I'd assume that if the card game continued to be produced, the focus sooner or later would mainly become the cards and not the toys. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Spinmaster probably adheres to some kind of "Philosophy" that involves making sure their physical toys end up in the hands of children of all ages. The card game very much for older people. You can say "But children are smarter than you give them credit for" (all Bakugan KZbinrs have said this at some point) but I'm gonna be honest. That's a dumb statement. By what margin? Your 6 year old might tell you something profound one day, then shit his pants and cry about his screen time the next day. Kids are, for the most part, not necessarily the brightest decision makers. And they also have short attention spans (especially these days). That means most kids won't want to sit and learn how to play the game. Hell, most adults don't want to either.
@andimjustalex Жыл бұрын
Man, I really wish the card game worked out... despite the game's flaws and how poorly it was managed, it was still a lot of fun. But I'm more frustrated that this reboot pretty much means my collection is pointless moving forward. The game as a whole is changing drastically with the whole beyblade-like "special attack" mechanic and I doubt it will be compatible with what came before in the Battle Planet era. If they're just going to reboot the series after losing focus every five years, I'd rather not have any part in it. I'll spend my money elsewhere in the meantime and see wether the reboot that comes after this one will manage to spark my interest.

I was never in to the original, when it came out I was too old for it. But I've always been in to card games, and when the reboot had an actual complex TCG tied to it, I tried it out, and loved it. But the cards were constantly lagging behind where the toys were, and they eventually just gave up on the card game. That's when I gave up on Bakugan.
@Shade2800 Жыл бұрын
Speaking as someone who just wanted the toys, I admit, when so much of Year 4 were releases of G2's previous figures, I stopped snagging quite as many of them. (Though I do want to find a Leonidas, without the need to get the Arena at some point.) *Doesn't help that for some bloody reason, the East Coast seems to get figures later than the rest of the states. It's the same with Transformers too.* Though I can confirm with the cards. Aside from the starter decks, I think I remember seeing individual card packs once, maybe twice. Granted, I wasn't really looking for them, but when just gazing casually at my local Walmart or Target, I still didn't see them.

Probably because the show needed to be rebooted due to their starting demographic aging out of it. Also probably trying to have a game that’s easier to localize by not having text that needs to be translated since they don’t have strong distribution so they wanted to reboot the game. Regardless I think they should have opted for a softer reboot. Like something building off the melee game with backwards compatibility with bp era.

addressing why people tend to fall off the dexterity challenge in bakugan, i personally think it's a case of poor implementation? the card game is alright as a card game, the dexterity challenge is honestly stellar as a dexterity game, but the combination is less than the sum of its parts. if you had a bakugan-like "roll a ball onto magnetic tiles, and those tiles have some point value attributed to which one you get it to stop on" that could blow up like pogs on its own. but when you add in a card game and try and bring it to a higher strategy game, it devalues the fun of getting good at the dexterity challenge. meanwhile card games can be successful if they offer deep and interesting strategy, but breaking the pace of a traditional tcg by adding the dexterity challenge devalues the skill of strategy. it's like mixing dutch chocolate and filet mignon - they're both great, but they don't belong on a fork together.

I still don't think the life-decking element of the (old) reboot's TCG was an inherent flaw with the game - just the way they specifically designed and implemented flip cards since nothing else interacted with the core mechanic. Because flips only triggered when milled as damage, and all the good ones worth running also had an energy cost in addition to it's already very specific play-condition; they weren't just dead draws, but by leaving the deck, actively lowered your odds at reducing incoming damage. Had they been better integrated into the game; flips would immediately trigger when flipped as damage, or could be played from hand for cost. However, I think a better implementation of the mechanic altogether would have been something like the "shield trigger"/"security" approach from games like Kaijudo/Digimon - where instead of having a dedicated type of card for the "flip" mechanic... Action, Hero, Evo, and later Gear, Geogan cards could have a "Flip" keyword that either activated the card's effect when flipped, or had some secondary effects... we kind of saw this with Flip-Heroes and the Armor stat on some Baku-Gear, but something like that should have been the approach from the beginning.

@haosmagnaingram6992 Жыл бұрын
6:19 life decking was not in anyway the problem. It was the card design around this mechanic with a complete lack of discard pile manipulation, and flips being both dead draws and costly as recovery’s. Heck there was a greater slew of problems around bakugan’s card design that caused a number of issues while it’s core game play remained fun in spite of said issues which I think is more of a testament to the quality of how bakugan played which is the opposite of your stance. Hyper Juken is good at demonstrating the issue as having been one in card design and not inherent to the mechanics, as that uses a life decking system but unlike bakugan the card design is well thought out around its mechanics.

Here's the deal with all these toy franchises - they need a good show first and foremost (by good show, I mean one that features characters who are at least mid-teens, and has decent graphics). After that, they need to make the toys available to their core audience And the toys should have at least some structure for gameplay. Bakugan worked because of the above, they failed to deliver the latter with the reboot. Beyblade is evergreen because every series has satisfied the above. Its just a thing every toy series should have prepared before even getting started. (unless you're Huntik, then you're just unlucky).

I think Bakugans best bet now is to focus on the physical aspect. More ways to roll, deploy, jump, etc. Thats the main appeal of the franchise. Clearly they cannot innovate or manage a card game, so innovate on the toys. Make them varied and interesting.
