However right you are, one thing you're underestimating is how willing people are to congregate in spaces with agreed upon expectations. I may not want to show my grandmother my sexy murder cards, but I wouldn't mind showing them to a stranger who is also playing those sexy murder cards.

Waifu card games are a thing and YGO is basically one of them. I think that at some point, regardless of the games you play, you learn to accept and embrace the games others show you and become numb to the idea of card being too lewd or gory.

I actually like that "flow" idea - having a set of cards you can theoretically chain together, until one "finisher" kills the "flow" and ends your turn. I think Flesh and Blood does something similar with it's action point nonsense.

Good video! Ophidian was one of the games I covered back when I briefly did card game videos, and I actually found myself enjoying it quite a bit. You're absolutely right that its biggest problem was just being too complicated for its own good, but I think if it had managed to survive past that initial core set, it could have grown into something pretty solid. As for 2360/Arenaverse, from what little information I've managed to glean, it seems they're having trouble finding a distributor, which is rather unfortunate. Ultimately I file this in the same bin as Wyvern: an undeniably flawed game with nonetheless great potential, tragically denied the chance to achieve it. (The Beyblade CCG really was steaming garbage though; there was very little good I could find in that one)

When I was a kid, I would sometimes get single trading cards without a proper deck (usually when a toy came with a card or when my cousin or older siblings would give me a couple of theirs) and I wanted to play games with them, but obviously wasn't able to follow the actual rules, so I would make up games that only needed the one or two cards I had. This got me thinking: Do you think it would be possible to make a TCG that only requires one card from each player to play? I'm trying to think of ways this could work and I think it being simple and aimed toward kids would be the best choice because you could sell very small starter packs and it would be low cost. However, making the actual gameplay sustainable and fun sounds tricky. Thoughts?
@Manda_Kat2 жыл бұрын
Coming back to this after a brainstorm session! What about a game that only needs two cards, a six sided die and something to keep track of damage. Basically things everyone has and can come up with if they want to play. The game has different game modes that allow for multiple cards, but the 1v1 game rules are what the basic playstyle revolves around for all modes. Each card has two or three actions it can take, each requiring a different skill check with the dice. So an attack could be powerful, but it requires a higher roll, so it's riskier than the smaller attack. This could help add the risk and randomness that is otherwise lost. And the rules for 1v1 mode can be printed on the back of every card!! So literally someone could play the game even if they found their only card dropped on the floor somewhere and have no other information about it. This game idea would definitely benefit from the "make the rules themselves simple, but add complexity in the card affects" guideline

I will say Yugioh is nowhere NEAR as complex as many people commonly believe, the summoning mechanics are easily compartmentalised so a new player can learn them one at a time before mixing and matching. I think Yugioh just lacked a good teaching tool until recently and even then the master duel tutorial is kind of slow and has some more to be desired.

It is easy to understand until you see the pendulum interactions...
@Eemi_Seppala2 жыл бұрын
YGO is quite simple, but the cards are tiresome and there are so many hurdles for beginner to intermediate players to over come (like chain blocking, missing timing and some pendulum stuff) that it seems to have hard to drawing in too many players. I know DL and MD made it more accessible, but I'm betting 75% of the players who started with those couldn't play with real cards, since they have been accustomed to the automated mechanics.

@angolin93522 жыл бұрын
As a former YGO player: Yes it is. The core rules were understandable at first, but as the game went on, the summon mechanics kept both multiplying and getting better, so new players would have to learn how they worked to know how to play the game. Also, Konami's rulings make no sense and after awhile these odd rulings got turned into new rules in the rulebook, until finally Konami had to completely change the way they wrote card text because so many cards interacted with these rulings-turned-rules that the game had become totally incomprehensible. They called this "problem-solving card text," but anyone who's had experience with both could tell you that it creates problems with more cards than the old style. Also, because some of these old cards are still in use (MST), some players will have to learn both styles of card text just in case their opponent busts out one of these old cards and you'll need to know if this is one of those cards where you select a target but the game doesn't consider it targeting, and cards where the card simply hits a monster that meets certain conditions but the game considers this "targeting" for some inexplicable reason.

Is not too fare trying to put an edgy-or sexy kinda art and then placing a Pokemon comercial do. You're comparing 2 different things that pander to 2 different types of public. I can get with the argument of a game going too grafical with violence or showing too much skin than necesary but sometimes artists wanna be daring and take some creative freedoms when it comes to presentations. Shure "Broud" appeal is a plus when it comes to game design but you don't hear the same with a game based on Warhammer where the whole setting is a universe in constant pain and war...but shure let's trow a Charmander cause kiddos wanna try playing with the big boys. Heck, The Act Man got into Yugioh cause it was tired of Pokemon's whole cutsie stetic (And on the Yugioh matter, no, it didn't started that simpler. Heck you can find old comics in the web where people complained about spell and trap.) If the setting is meant to be dark and edgy, what did you expected? Heck in this game's defense the art ain't that crazy neither heck it even has some neat pieces like Violent Quiver. The game was bad designed and broken
