i think the sleeves are a fantastic addition specifically for the younger audience, its a great way to teach them that cards should be protected
@nelsonnewman7090
@nelsonnewman7090 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine the "one set of sleeves" rule is to prevent your hand from being marked. Two types of sleeve in a players hand would have an impact on any kind of blind discard effect the devs would want to include.
@Nerdbait39
@Nerdbait39 2 жыл бұрын
Problem with that is, since you have to announce which deck your drawing from, if you’re paying attention and are good at ‘find the lady’ you could already follow which cards in your opponents hand are which. It’s kinda like on magic arena once a card in hand has been revealed it stays that way in the UI whereas in paper magic players take notes of what was in their opponents hand.
@TekoMythmaster
@TekoMythmaster 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nerdbait39 Counterpoint, just shuffle your hand constantly. That's what we do in Yu-Gi-Oh. Sure you can be "good at 'find the lady'", but if both players are constantly shuffling their hands and trying to play the game at the same time keeping track of which cards are where in your opponents hand become more of a detriment than benefit when you could be spending that mental energy on paying attention to the actual game. There is no benefit to making it easier for your opponents to track the cards your hand just because they *might* be psychotically good at doing it without you making them obviously different to each other.
@deathseraph3
@deathseraph3 2 жыл бұрын
@@TekoMythmaster the problem is that you don't have to track where the cards are in your opponents hand, just how many cards they drew from their decks. That's an easy task for anyone who's played these kinds of games enough. Keeping them in separate sleeves would help make clean up smoother and possibly prevent cheaters from deliberately putting cards in the wrong pile because what cards are what is marked with their sleeve.
@TekoMythmaster
@TekoMythmaster 2 жыл бұрын
@@deathseraph3 Knowing how many of each kind of card are in your opponents hand doesn't really matter for a random discard effect, it only tells you the odds of the random card being discarded being one of those two types. Technically useful I guess, but it doesn't actually let either player bias those odds. If each type of card is clearly marked as being that type of card regardless of which side of the card you can see, then you can never be certain that the randomly chosen card was actually randomly chosen. If, for example, you or your opponent specifically want the Spirit card you just drew to be discarded, and it's the only spirit card in your hand, all either player has to do is look at the sleeve and just pick that one. Having each deck in separate sleeves makes any blind randomness involving the cards in your hand literally impossible to execute fairly. It's just asking to start fights. You could technically use dice to determine the random outcome, but that method starts to fall apart quickly if the number of cards in the hand isn't exactly 6. Yes, as Kohdok mentions in the video, separate sleeves would make post-game cleanup faster and easier, but it also straight up bans the games developers from ever adding any kind of random selection of cards in the hand to a card effect in the game, cutting off a huge number of potential mechanics and deck gimmicks entirely. Also I'm not really sure how intentionally mixing cards from one deck into the other would actually help if you tried cheating that way. In a constructed card game the goal when building a deck is to minimize randomness as much as possible, why would you want to make it harder to draw a specific card by mixing it in with the other type when the game literally lets you pick which card type you're drawing each turn? It's all limit one anyways, putting your one copy of a card in the wrong deck just makes it harder to draw, and if you're putting enough cards in the wrong deck to make the odds of drawing the one card you want from the correct deck significantly better it's going to be super obvious when the deck limit is 10-20 cards.
@deathseraph3
@deathseraph3 2 жыл бұрын
@@TekoMythmaster I won't lie, I didn't read the part in OPs message about random discards so that one is on me. However random discard is still doable with distinct sleeves for each deck, it just needs a d6 and establishing a few details before rolling. It falls apart to me when the number is 7 or higher as there's a number of simple ways to do 6 and lower. Personally though, I don't know why anyone would want random discards. It just doesn't sound like any fun to me. Also, the limit is 1 for your spirits, but not for the signs. As Kohdok showed there was even a limit 4 card there. Now I don't have any of these cards or know the rules indepth, but I can imagine there are still ways of messing with the composition of each deck before playing. Either way I'd need to play the game myself or read up on the rules to give a more informed opinion. Edit: after having checked the rules, yeah no it's a non-issue if people try putting cards in the wrong deck. Sorry about that.

I'm inclined to believe that the sleeves and magnetic box are exclusive to the first edition Kickstarter decks, and the retail edition will follow the more traditional formatting. It's super cool that a playset in this game is 1 though. It eliminates the feels bad of opening one copy of a super rare card, and then feeling bad because you can't realistically use it until you get 2-3 MORE copies.

The Backend resource system reminds me of the First attempt to make a Yugioh TCG, when Bandai had the license, instead of Konami. In that system, it followed the Manga in that there were no tributes or anything to that effect, but differed in that it ditched the concept of life points. Instead, when you destroyed a monster (by battle, I think, but I also don't think it mattered much in practice, since I don't recall really any non-battle destruction in Bandai rules) you got points according to the level of the monster you destroyed. Couple that with the use of a system akin to MtG or Hearthstone where you compared Attack values to Defense (regardless of which was attacking, and with no battle positions), to determine what was destroyed, and it actually I feel sort of captured the feel of at least the Yugi vs Kaiba rivalry, where Kaiba has all the theoretically best cards, but Yugi just manages to have the perfect counters in terms of enough attack to destroy his opponent's cards and at lower levels, so that even trading 1-for-1 or worse, he comes out ahead.
@MrZer093
@MrZer093 2 жыл бұрын
From what I recall, the basics were that it was like War in the sense that each player played a monster face down and then flipped them up at the same time with the higher stats winning. Though in that game it was attack going after defense. You gained points equal to the level of the destroyed opposing monster so naturally better monsters had higher levels. You also had spells that acted like trap cards that you could flip up after the monsters were flipped (or keep down for future battles) to alter shenanigans. Interestingly, there were character cards in that they could be used instead of monsters but lacked stats. Instead they won battles via alternative means but still had a level so if they failed to win, the opponent would get those points. Like, Kaiba auto won against any monster (but lost to any character), Serenity auto won against any high level monster (while being a much lower level than Kaiba), Joey auto won against a character, and Tristan always lost but didn’t have a level so it was a good way to just waste opponent’s cards in a game. Only one copy of each character was allowed though. The game was over when any player didn’t have any cards left in deck so the player with the most points in the end won. Types mattered as Dragon Capture Jar was a really weak monster but auto won against any dragon so it could even beat the mythical Blue Eyes. Also Yami Yugi was the most broken card. While it had an absurdly high level, it auto won literally any battle. There was no point in not using it as your opponent didn’t gain points when you won a battle so the high level didn’t matter. Tea was also amazing as she swapped with any monster in the grave after flip. The game failed because Bandai just wanted a fad game and well, it was only just a fad. They didn’t care so eventually the fans didn’t either. The rules were an unclear mess (did Joey or Yami win in a battle?) and soon enough Konami announced they were making their own game based on the franchise so people just dropped this one. While Konami thought their game was gonna be a fad too the main difference was that they wanted it to last as long as possible and well, here we are today over 20 years later.

Never heard of this, but here are a couple impressions I got from this video: The art is high quality and consistent. Obviously it won't be for everyone, but that's fine. Choosing to draw from different deck is an interesting mechanic, that I haven't seen much. Three decks is kind of a lot though. I'm not a big fan of cards that have effects outside of the hand or areas of public knowledge. Just kind of picking up your deck (or even side deck apparently?) out of nowhere is weird and can create some broken gamestates (in case of misunderstandings regarding the activation timing, priority and such). I like that the starter deck comes with sleeves and a reusable box. 25 cards is not a lot though. No idea how playable these decks actually are. The cards' text boxes are nicely done. I'm not sure how I feel about the font for the card names, but I'm not a big fan of the style the SP costs are held in. The cards are a little crowded with all the stuff on the right side. Not allowing different sleeves for the three decks is weird. Surely the amount of cards remaining in each deck is public knowledge anyways. I definitely agree with the argument you made. Even in Yugioh, where different sleeves are allowed and common, that kind of mistake still happens sometimes. Correcting this mistake is not that hard in Yugioh, but here it actually seems like kind of a big deal. Maybe I just missed it, but how do you win? I can't really tell how this game would actually play.

Original VS System had that same type of back end cost built in too. Every character had a recruit cost, when a character in combat became stunned you lost endurance (hp) equal to the recruit cost. In VS when a charater was defeated in combat it was turned face down, or stunned. Only at the end of the turn did they get KO'd and sent to the KO pile (the graveyard).

On the subject of “kids games try to appeal to adults by utilizing complexity too much”, it reminds me of Buddyfight. That game kept trying too hard to appeal to kids with silly art and comedy shitcks in the show while becoming more and more complex as time went on and they wound up losing both audiences as a result. Adults saw it as childish and kids kept getting lost in the complex rules and mechanics.

No Kuriobhs do that exactly... the closest is Rainbow Kuriboh which revives itself when they attack you directly but doesn't stop or redirect any attacks with that effect (from hand it equips itself to a monster and it prevents it from attacking while it remains equipped). You are looking into "Necro Gardna" or "Bacon Saver" for a "banish from GY to negate 1 attack". Or "Shield Warrior" to "banish from GY to prevent 1 battle destruction".

The thing that really confuses me is this game's direction. Who exactly is it for? The art style looks like it was made to appeal to younger audiences, but kids aren't going to know who these characters are (at least without a TV show or Netflix series or something). Why play this instead of something with recognizable characters like Pokemon TCG? Or, drawing from personal experience when I was in elementary school, I gravitated towards Yugioh and Duel Masters back then in the early 2000's because I watched the shows, lots of other kids were playing it, and I liked the more "mature" art style. The gameplay meanwhile is like Yugioh but aiming to fix some of Yugioh's problems. That's actually something you touched on in a 7 Deadly Sins video I believe: there's no shortage of games out there which are "Magic the Gathering but better", but few of those games end up sticking around because they don't really do anything special that MtG doesn't already do better. I see the same problem between this game and Yugioh. So idk, I hope I get proven wrong but I don't see this game taking off.

Most new games coming out of big companies either skew older or use properties more popular with millenials instead of the kids. It seems like only indies want to appeal to kids, which is a shame. Pokemon cards are still popular with the kids and YGO is about the only other game I've seen successfully attract younger players in recent years. It's really hard to get kids to see independent properties though and I'd wager the TCG model, along with their parents being more savvy to it, isn't helping matters.
