Yep, even the AD/DA on a Zoom field recorder is just fine. Maybe if someone really needs 192 Khz and higher, that limits the field... truth is that a lot of the "sound" people liked in various converters is overloading the inputs on purpose to get a bit of distortion.

Great video! some of my thoughts: API/SSL is more punchy in the mid range on the kick and snare (as you mentioned), which is what API is known for (as you may know being an owner) and why people buy it. It is more pronounced when pushed a tad too (not done here as you mentioned). You may not use this feature, but I definitely do. I tried pushing my Audient ID14 and it clips BAD without a way to fix that. Good thing I don't use the mic pres on it and just the ADAT. That's the reason to spend a ton of money on preamps is for that color and texture. At the end of the day, Audient isn't competing with API/SSL and the fact that it gets as close as it does, is super impressive! This is major competition for focusrite who's downside is their pres (though not as bad as it used to be). I'll be recommending this interface to a LOT of people looking for mutlichannel interfaces in the future! thanks for the video! I also want to add that the real context of the clarity of pres/converters is how it sits in a mix with transient response, not just tone. Cheap preamps will need to be worked harder to sit in the mix while a good pre just fits right in. I got a feeling these will do just fine though. Great job Audient! It continues to amaze me how great low end gear is getting these days. Also why did you opt for the splitters over a patchbay with mults? I feel like it could have been cheaper? Well if you already own a patchbay.

The Alpha Link uses converters that first marketed over 15 years ago... It was a competitive product against the original Digilink converters from the late 1990s. I'm not sure if I'd seriously talk about them as high end converters in 2023

There is clearly a difference, even to my tinnitus trashed hearing. I so didn't want there to be. Your kit makes those drums sound like an expensive recording straight away, the detail is gorgeous. Really nice test! Listening to the recordings from my top-quality mastering room tells me that, sure, I absolutely prefer the API/SSL without a doubt since those recordings got some of the details you would expect from high-quality preamps, but the Audient is really not that far behind. Hi . I am trying to decide between focusrite scarlett 18i20 or the evo16. They are about the same price. Does the 24 bit / 192 kHz vs 24 bit / 96 kHz have any say.
@shotgunndunn Жыл бұрын
I’ve owned 5 Focusrite interfaces in the past 18 months. They sounded great. But ultimately all failed to work for the long haul. I have the EVO16 and SP8 now. With ZERO issues thus far. Granted, it’s only been maybe 6-8 weeks. I am only able to record at 48kHz. Which is a minor disappointment. The sound quality and features MORE than make up for the lack of 96kHz. I would highly recommend the EVO16. I do find that the auto gain feature is a bit cautious. I do end up turning things up 3-4dB. I hope in a future firmware update they can install some sort of a ‘master gain adjust feature’. Where we can still use the auto gain, but make it a bit hotter if we so desire. The S/N ratio is stellar on the EVO/SP setup as well. I am VERY impressed. And to think, I paid $1150 shipped to my door for 16 inputs. 🤯

Here’s a brief summary of the issues i had with focuswrong… 18i20 brand new in box from amazon. The ADAT input did not work. Thereby not allowing me to use the OctoPre. Returned to Amazon. Bought a used 8 Pre X from Reverb. After 6 months it started randomly losing Thunderbolt connection. Replaced with another used 8 Pre X from Reverb. Same issue later occurred. Replaced with brand new in box Clarret+ 8 Pre. Ch. 1 phantom power went out randomly. I think there was another Focusrite piece in there somewhere. Maybe it was just the 4 units. Idk. But it was very stressful. Not a whole of music being made. Just endless trouble shooting. Switched to Audient. So far so good. Hasn’t been very long though. But I feel everything’s gonna be alright!!!

Thanks to Thomann some years ago i bought a "analog style usb audio interface" don't remember the name of it a huge black thingie. Yeah, i could hear some sound difference from my speakers it sounded a bit brighter then before, but that was that pretty much, and built in preamps ofc, but i already have preamps. Sent it back and still rockin' my first ever audio interface delta 66 with m-audio d-mp3, in fact i even bought a second one so i have in my both computers, they work perfectly fine with a Pci express to pci adapter. No worrying about usb latency or your usbs getting lose the more you stick it in and out of there! Better latency then the usb cards aswell. From my understanding what's worse is the converters, but the question is how much that really comes into play if you record DI's with a countryman di into the interface. Not much i'd say unless stacking up channel after channel more noise get's added, i guess, but then we have these amazing noise reduction plugins anyway that could probably save the day. Thanks for the video. Have you tried the Tonex yet? So far i think it's pretty amazing.

I think the api / ssl setup has al little more exciting and aggressive high mids to tops but in a non harsh musical way. Audient sounds more natural and open to me. It also seems to have less roll off in the subs and upper top frequencies. Reminds me of how my focusrite converters / pre's sound. In a nutshell: -API/SSL: Exciting high end but roll off at super low subs and super high top freqs. Transients sound more compact and punchy. -Audient: Natural and hifi tops but also looser and less compact / punchy. I think you get a more pronounced effect when you add up a whole mix with everything recorded through the same setup. Interesting comparison! Both more than capable. :)

Pretty awesome. As you mentioned late in the video, there is probably a fair bit more difference once you drive stuff. All my high end pres pretty much sound the same when you leave headroom, but when you start driving them or even compressing them downstream and their detail comes up in level it changes thing. Still super impressive though.
@imcrazedandconfused Жыл бұрын
Very good observation. With nowadays converters, really low noise floor and 24 bit and floating point bit depth/resolution in processing, there is absolutely no need to record hot signals. There is plenty of headroom. So far, the differences from going from a good oldschool console into good converters to using the cheap modern usable interfaces and their pres are really subtle and most of the time not the bottleneck to produce a good mix afterwards. Things have changed a lot in the last 2 decades. What counts are noise and distortion figures of the converters, and that's it basically. There is a lot of myth going on to sell expensive studio gear (and many so-called experts are willing to feed the myths because they invested a lot of money into expensive stuff themselves, it is necessary to protect their investments...)

As important is your choice of mic the playback monitors your mixing settings and effects tweaks etc. I picked up an old M Audio Fast Track Ultra the other day cos the guy could not get it to work in WIndows 11, I managed it first time. Originally cost £400 I paid £30. Sure there are some bad audio interfaces, poor latency noisy pre amps/outputs etc but then there are some cracking audio interfaces and they do not have to cost the earth. For messing about I use the Motu M4, absolute beast, but then it came with a great reputation and I have to say, well justified

I can hear the differences when the kit is completely summed together and I can hear it clearly. The EVO definitely has more high end details (good, bad and indifferent) where the API/SSL has a tighter less washy sound. I believe that the differences are more in the mic pre than in the conversion itself. The Audient conversion is amazing as is the SSL, I have an Orion 32+ GEN 3 and it has shown me that with gr8 conversion you will hear the mic and pre amp differences more accurately. what would be more interesting to hear is what does the API sounds like when using conversion only with the EVO? Audient's mic pres are 3 kilo-ohms while API 512s are 1500 ohms. So that is where the hi-fi sound comes from. The higher the impedance the better the transient response will be and the less distortions and saturation are present. Impedance is super important when picking a mic preamps sound. The 1073 was 300 ohms and that is why it breaks up so quickly. Lower impedance mic preamps squash the transients because the voltage is lower and the slew rate causes a smearing effect. Cheers!!

Very informative! Looking forward to acoustic recordings/.

nice video, but I think you should have inverted the phase of one of the recordings, then mix and render both so we can actually see what are the differences (if there is any), but as you said, from a practical point of view they are very close enough

I talked about why a null test was NOT possible in the video. But feel free to download the files and try!
@Veveve1 Жыл бұрын
unfortunately youtube compression is killing the test but so thanks for having the tracks online

You’re welcome! But please remember: If it doesn’t translate through KZbin it’s not gonna translate through any of the streaming platforms where the vast majority of music is consumed today.

I like the high end on the SSL setup better
@dingbatjack1234 Жыл бұрын
SSL is def more weighty in the bottom end. You could really tell with the snare!

Great Test! I hear more focus on the Api/SSL but is just a freak thing 🙃

I hear a slight difference, especially with the full set, even on compressed youtube through speakers. Great video, btw. For some of us with project studios, I second being able to see/hear how it fares on vox and single instruments.

Still trying to decide between the Evo 16 and motu ultralite mk5 for a portable set up. The Evo interests me, but I do wish it was as compact as the Motu.

You're content is consistently fire,Hombre. Big thanks,but I'm saying this video is almost exhausting -- every minute is solid good-to-know info and no doubts you put in the work so we didn't have to. I wish we all had big SSL boards,except....why? Amazing options nowadayz

I use a 24 channel Harbinger L2404 mixer into a Tascam US 4X4 HR. Sounds pretty damn good... But I'm just a bedroom recording engineer any more. I used to have a big studio years ago

wow the audient does sound very good - for most of us audient interface would be a no brainer - great video

Evo sounds a touch more muffled in comparison but the difference is tiny and surely does not match the price difference. Awesome job and video Kristian!

There's definitely a crispness and weight to the high end setup that I only hear cumulatively when listening to the full kit. Throw some API preamp emulations on the audient version and level match and I'm sure it would be almost indistinguishable. Very cool comparison and you just made audient a future sale from myself haha.

Thank you man. You get what you pay for.. but at the same time those diminishing returns are vicious. You pretty much saved your viewers 9000$….

I can hear a clear difference for the first part, but not as clear when it goes half time. I'm not calling one out as better than the other. However, my guess is the mic preamps are making the most difference.
