How do you decide when & when not to compress? or is it just for the sake of the demo no compression's been used on this track. Great version & beautifully recorded!
@rist982 жыл бұрын
I find that the most important argument for using compression is the answer to the question, how will this music be listened to. Here he knows its pro audio people who have good gear or headphones to listen to this. Meaning there is no noise, good acoustics and there is good capacity to bring out the details in even quite dynamic music(good speakers/gear). If these things are different, there is noise(listenin in car), bad acoustics, and bad speakers that dont have proper dynamics, then you will have to compress to ensure all details are retained, more or less, even in these bad conditions. So, for noise, your goal is to keep the music above the noise floor, but also not get too loud that is becomes unreasonably loud. For bad acoustics, you also want to keep the volume where it stays above the reverb volume. So if one drum hit is loud, it will reverberate in the room and drown out the quieter vocal details for example. And then there is the speakers dynamics. Most consumer speakers dont have good dynamics, meaning the loud parts will mask the quiet bits. Hence again compression helps. Bring the dynamics close together and these problems will disappear. This will be better for these bad conditions, but will be non ideal for good conditions, as the dynamics will be nonexistent, which still is a very important characteristic of good music. Another reason to compress is to fix a musicians bad dynamics. Also, here another factor is how he is presenting the gear as is, and compression will distort that... Also, the musicians were very well controlled in their dynamics anyway, so no real need to compress at all.

I saw in one of your responses that using the line inputs allows you to bypass the pres when using an outboard pre. Is that accurate? I understand the id44 has two ins allowing this to be done but that virtually no other sub-$1,000 interface allows this; that an external pre connected to a line-in essentially runs through two convertor stages. So, please comment on the accuracy of this comment, if you will. I'm no expert, but I've read multiple comments over the past year or two in my interface research that claim the internal pres cannot be bypassed in most situations. Thanks, Warren! You da man!

Pretty cool! For $500 that's rather unreal. A couple of suggestions though which seem like they'd be easy to implement (maybe I'm wrong though). Having preamp Channels 1&2 accessible on the back of the unit as well as the front would be very beneficial. Not the end of the world but particularly session drummers or project studio engineers will likely have the inputs semi permanently wired into either a snake or a Patch bay. Having those cables permanently wired into the front would be an eye sore and potentially difficult to manoeuvre any XLR's into if they are part of a snake that also attaches to channels 3-8 in the back. Again, likely not a deal breaker but might be for some depending on their rack setup. Many interfaces have Hi-Z inputs on the front as an option with regular XLR inputs on the back so that they're still accessible on both sides. Also, I'm not sure that I saw the Smartgain button in the software mixer. If that's the case the Smartgain feature might not be usable for any session drummer who doesn't have easy access to their interface from their drum set (i.e. separate control room or simply having their setup more than a few feet from their drum set). Some setups are in tight spaces and manually hitting the smart gain button then trying to get back to your kit in time before the function turns off might not be very intuitive or possible depending on the setup. It looks very promising though and the preamps definitely sound amazing for the price!

Do you know if the evo 16 does class compliant audio? Another example of an interface that does class combined audio would be the tascam model 12. Granted that’s a mixer, but it also does class compliant audio (by which I mean I can plug The tascam model 12 into my MPC and it will be recognized as an available audio interface). I checked the support documentation at audient, but can’t find any clear answer. On a side note, the only thing I wish the evo 16 had which it doesn’t is midi. However I can also see the value in Audient just focusing on the audio side. Anyway, great job on the review.

cool unit. only thing stopping me is no dsp there, Im used to my mr816 where I can dial its nice dsp reverb with zero latency to a singer (they always want reverb, you know that) and not have it later on track at all. everybody happy. I could use external reverb on monitor line for that purpose, but I just don't have one. If would, this evo will be no brainer for me as it offers 2x adat ins/outs and that another adat evo unit could be linked there for extra 8channels 96kHz if Im not mistaken. my mr816 has only one pair of those (limits me to 4 adat channels when above 48kHz sampling rate). great vid/song/recording. thank you:)

For me I've narrowed it down to the 18i20 and the Evo 16 ... but I'm a little wary of the Evo 16 because there's so much hype about it and because there are no real world reviews of it because it hasn't been released to the public yet. All the influencer reviews focus on the smart gain function and say nothing about noise levels, fidelity etc. I also wonder if it's wise to buy an unproven interface in which all of it's functions are controlled by one knob ... it's just a reliability concern. I dunno ... I'm on the fence ... but so far I'm not convinced.

Thanks for the great review! Sounds killer! Do you know if it will spit out 8 channels at 96khz through adat like the asp 800 or can it only output 4 channels at 96khz? I’m thinking of grabbing one to use as a slave for my Apollo. It would be awesome to be able to add an extra 8 channels at 96 khz through adat.

Great video! I appreciate you taking the time to share the recording process! Thank you! What was the software you used? I am also interested in the other features that were not discussed in the video. Could you share your knowledge regarding the optical ins and outs in connecting to say, an Adat? Thanks again - very well done!

Pretty good Warren but have you not heard of the Zoom R16 and others at half the price? Records direct to SD card in minutes.
@amostlyreasonableguy2 жыл бұрын
The zoom R16 records at 44.1 kHz. This does 96 kHz which means you can get far more detailed sounding recordings. I’ve used interfaces that compare to both abilities and the difference is audibly noticeable when recording the same song.

Can we team it up with ID44? which one should be the main interface?

i was watching the vid on the expensive vs affordable gear and the audient was mentioned 9000 times 😂 excited to see a video specifically about it, very timely!!! thanks Warren!

Great stuff, Warren! Question, though. They market this obviously because of price point to those who are less experienced in gain staging, but as a seasoned pro, would you use this regularly or simply set things yourself?

Fantastic product and great video showcasing its use. I own both the iD44 and ASP800, so I already have 12 channels at 96k, but if I were in the market, I would totally go after this one.

Hi Nate! I both the iD44 and I'm saving money to buy the ASP800. But with the EVO 16 my 12 channels seems to be closer, you know!
@ninjaneer19742 жыл бұрын
@@malevahouse the asp800 is 8 channels of mic preamps, not an audio interface, so you couldn’t use the evo16 and your id44 at the same time, since both are audio interfaces. At least that’s what my understanding is. If you already own an id44, it’s best to find maybe a used asp800 to offset the cost. Then you would have 12 channels of useable analog preamps.
@ninjaneer19742 жыл бұрын
@@malevahouse OR if you only need 8 channels, buy the evo16 and sell your id44? That’s probably the most cost effective way to go, bit it’s 4 less mic preamps.
@malevahouse2 жыл бұрын
@@ninjaneer1974 Thank you! My Audient distributor is telling me that you can connect the id44 adat in port to the EVO 16 adat out port. In this way the iD44 will slave the EVO 16 and be able to use 12 preamps channels.

I really dislike the combi-jacks, makes it hard to route to a patchbay, but, I understand the formfactor and intended user of this particular unit.
@Polentaccio2 жыл бұрын
One thing they fail to mention is, can you bypass the preamps on the combo jacks and hit the converters straight like you can with an ASP 880?? Because what is the point of potentially hitting outboard and then going through the entire preamp on the way back in?
@ianlodes132 жыл бұрын
I'd assume you'd be able to set the inputs as line inputs thereby bypassing the preamps? But good question I'd like to know as well.
@JaeBTundra12 жыл бұрын
Nah Audient told me you can't bypass the preamps.

My 8-in/8-out of 20 years ago was the Gadget Labs Wave/824. That was a great unit for its time, great quality at a great price. I still have it, but the NT 4.0 DAW I used it in has been dead for a long, long time. :-)

If it’s once or twice then just automate the plug in for that couple of times, if it’s a four on the floor track then you won’t need to do this at all!
