just to add on the clip studio portion. you can just make a top layer fill it with black and change layer mode to hue to check value. if its a single layer painting you can go to layer property and just switch from color to gray
@MathiasZamecki3 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly I think I mention it :) in all those app this work similar either color hue or saturation blending mode

@@MathiasZamecki yes you did i jsut wanted to add which settings to go too since I haven't seen anyone do a tutorial specifically on csp settings about value checking. speaking of the software will you be tapping into its animation functions or the software itself in the future? there's so little tutorials on how to use its animation

Huh! This is yet another new technique of grayscale to color that I've never seen before and with it being so vibrant I for a moment thought it would be something like what I've developed for myself, but not quite. Mine is still different and I would love to show you one day. Great video, I'll have to analyze it and repeat the process as soon as I'll find a bit of spare time

I hope you see this comment and that it will be useful for you since I'll be writing about technicalities about greyscale. I'm going to write about Krita because that's the program I know (but I feel like it might be correct for CSP and PS too). In Krita, the best way to color an area without changing the value is to use the Color blending mode. It's based on BT.601 luminosity (fairly accurate for human eyes, unlike HSV model), and you can check that it won't *ever* change the values of the painting using a Filter Layer on top with Adjust - Desaturate - Luminosity BT.601 (BT.709 is accurate for the eye too but has a tiny bit different formula, especially for intense reds and greens, so better to just use 601 there to avoid a brain explosion). Another good way to check values is to just use another layer with "Color" blending mode with grey. It will be faster than a filter layer. And yes, it will again provide accurate results. Ctrl+Y exists in Krita too but by default it's set to CMYK soft-proofing and might have some issues in one specific case, so I'd consider a special layer on top to check values more user-friendly, expecially more beginner-friendly. One more correction, when you use HSV slider to change the color, you actually probably change the values, too. In Krita you can again use the bt.601 in those sliders if you change from "Hue/Saturation/Lightness" to "...Luma". (That's because Krita has various HSX models, the easiest to use in color selector is HSV, but the one with accurate value is called "HSY'", and the last component is Luminosity BT.601 or Luma (Luma is gamma-corrected), and Color blending mode use that HSY model to color the canvas (you can find Color HSV, Color HSB and Color HSI modes, but Color HSY is just called "Color" to indicate to users which one is the one they're looking for. Some short further reading: docs.kr ita.o rg/en/reference_manual/blending_modes/hsx.ht ml?highlight=luma) . I hope I addressed everything. Also source, and disclaimer, I'm connected to Krita development, which is also how I know this stuff. I'm not saying you should change your workflow, if it works for you then it works (and you do give useful advice in the video), but I do hope you would at least test it and see for yourself. Also if you have any questions that you think I can answer about the technical things, feel free to ask. I hope to hear from you.

Hello, Krita user here thank you for sharing your insightful knowledge! May I ask you a question? because you seem to know your stuff well. Im currently looking for a greyscale to color process while maintaining the accurate values and color vibrancy. Would the best way be to just use the color blending mode? You described it as the most accurate, but it still seems to look off sometimes. Would you also advise to not use HSV sliders at all beause of the value manipulation ? And what do you think about Gradient maps are they a accurate tool in this case?
