In this live stream I will be discussing how the physical properties of light transmission in water interact with Kokanee's physiological vision constraints and ability and how that ultimately impacts what colors you should be using when targeting Kokanee. This will help you understand why pinks, reds, and oranges have become the standard Kokanee colors and why you might want to explore other color options depending on conditions.

Agreed. I still struggle a bit specifically with kokanee on my local waters (large, hydrostatic lake) but have been able to tweak the concepts a bit to help me focus on Rainbows and have been seeing dramatic improvements in my catch rate and catch quality.

We just started a small online business this year. I know we are a bit late to the party, but we can accommodate your request for blue, purple, fluorescent and glow in the dark dodgers. We handcraft each dodger and design them especially for Kokanee. You have motivated & educated us many times throughout the past few years. It would be our pleasure to partake in this theory.

@Spilt Milt Productions Tyler, You got me for life my friend you. I grew fishing for everything out of wood driftboat and at 57 I still fish for everything out of a driftboat (sometimes i hate it, fnn wind lol). My point is I have used so much of your teaching from wiring boat stuff, lithium battery stuff, colors, gear etc. etc (I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM YOU) cant thank you enough. My point is you touch a hell of alot more folks than just kayak fishermen and I mean ALOT more. I told Jen that we need to plan 5 day trip this summer to NE Oregon and eastern Washington sight seeing, fishing 😉 and hopefully meet you both in person and take you guys lunch or dinner or just a beer. We really do love your content and I know we are just another couple normal folks that loves to fish for anything but, you have what we believe is the Best, Most Educational and Inspiring content on KZbin and hell, your SUPER fun to watch! Oh also, please keep showing the homestead, bird content, food and we love the girls (chickens)!! You guys have a incredible spring and we will be patiently waiting for your next content.

Pink is a very common kokanee color but does not exist on the whitelight spectrum as a single color. I believe this explains why pink works at depth. Pink is a mixture of green, blue, and red. Kokanee most likely see pink as bkue-green at depth greater than 30 feet.

East Twin Lakes all the way over in Salisbury Connecticut has Kokanee salmon and I never caught one but with information you provided might make the difference. It has been almost 40 yrs since I fished there. After watching the tail end of your informative video might go try to catch some this year. Water has plenty of lime springs and you can see way down. I moved to Mattawamkeag Maine so I’m not near that location. As far as I know the State of Maine does not have Kokanee salmon but New York does.

Do we know if kokanee have lucidum tapetum eye structures similar to other teleost fishes to aid in visual acuity during low light, crepuscular periods? Dig your channel and this is my favorite episode to date - great presentation!

Thanks so much for the great content! Very interesting! I got a few UV hoochies from PPT and I'm anxious to try them out! If I recall correctly, you prefer to rig your hoochies with the trailing hook clear of the skirt. Would you recommend that I add beads to pre-rigged hoochies that have the trailing hook half buried in the skirt?
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt Жыл бұрын
You can add beads or simply retie the hooks with a bit more clearance which I prefer to do.
@steveliske220
@steveliske220 Жыл бұрын
Do you ever go so far as to swap out the hooks for your preferred split shot drop shot hooks? Or maybe change up the size….replace the 4’s with 2’s if targeting larger fish?
@spiltmilt

Yes I almost always trade out for split shot drop shot. I do go to size 2's for larger fish.

I'm wondering.... I have very small diameter blue braided line that I put on a few of my rods and if I try trolling with them, would the blue color be more of a deterrent than, say, mono, flouro, or a different color braid?

I doubt it will impact your catch rates all that much as Kokanee aren't particularly line shy and you'll head a leader anyways.
