Many anglers are convinced that equipping your boat for Kokanee fishing is very expensive. Not True….
Step out of the studio and into the “Bait Lab” with Host Duane Inglin as he walks through some basic set-up idea’s that do not cost a ton of money. He will cover, fishing dropper-lead, using small manual-downriggers and rod & reel combos that work very well, even if you do not have line-counter reels.

All good information !!! Thanks for the video. I thought that I was the only guy with down riggers on a drift boat... Snap weights are my go to gear now.

I started out trolling for Kokanee with a Canon Mini Downrigger. A friend told me a reel that works great with a downrigger is the Zebco 33 that has a lever to let the reel turn while dropping the canon ball. Used those for years and still have a few of them. I bought cheap fiberglass rods to go with them. The only problem with the reel is changing line has to be limber line that will work with a push button reel.

I like the Abu, Shimano, and Daiwa mag cast control reels with ergonomic free spool button. The bent metal freespool buttons can be line catchers. Bought some near new ones of Ebay. I'm always happy to see them when I'm going through my reel collection. Great video.

I have 3 of the Eagle Claw rods that I bought for the kids and guests in the boat. I have to admit, I am not affraid to pull it out over the lamiglass when the Kokes, or trout, are on the smaller side. That rod makes fighting the fish a lot of fun. As a side note, I always thought the measuring lines on the bottom of the blank were for helping determine how much line you are hand-peeling off the reel. Great video, by the way. A lot of folks get caught up in all the gear for this type of fishing, and then get sucked into a thinking they need the best of everything. Not everyone is making a living off fishing, and need to know it is OK to be frugal, and that there is still decent gear out there for very reasonable prices.

@@kevinwest4488 I agree that in the past Eagle Claw was a top tier brand, but sadly that is no longer the case. They still have some good products, don't get me wrong, but they have not been on the cutting edge of fishing technology for a very long time. Still, I will not summarily dismiss their products just because of the name, instead I will recommend their products that have good value.

I have been using 9ft 6 weight flyrods with salmon sized 10/11 weight flyreels loaded with leadline and a 15 foot leader.....2 to 5 colors out longlining has been successful for me.......I have that small downrigger but haven't used it yet

@@bradfarrahgerwing154 Use what works! That should be the go-to phrase for all anglers. Long-lining with lead line is fine for larger Kokanee, but the weight just kills the action of the fight, and affects your ability to read what the fish is doing and adapt to it. Don't be afraid to use the downrigger, it is a game changer for putting fish in the boat, especially when having to go deep in the summer temps. I would say that out of the last 100+ fish I have hooked, I landed all but 1. Light line, and the ability to feel the fish and headshakes gives you an advantage you can't shrug at if you are serious about catching Kokanee.

The tape measure on the Eagle Claw is for counting out line distance if you don’t have a reel with a line counter.

The Japanese just use a colour marked line. Every colour change is 10 meters , basically the same as 10 yards.

Good info! I got my downriggers on Ebay for a song. They are both manuals. Might swap out one for an electric. I've seen those Eagle Claw poles & they look amazing. Another pole to look for are one's that I got at Bi-Mart here in the Pacific Northwest. It is an Ugly Stik USECA702UL 7'0', 2-6 lbs, 1/32 - 1/4 oz rod. I got them for $55/ea. Was promoted as a Kokanee pole. I've got 2 of them and love them. I use a Penn 109 with your bobber stop "line counter" & it works great. With this pole, I've stopped using snubbers as it became too soft & giving & I lost a lot of fish. Great video!

If you simply Google "fishing tackle weight sliders" you will have more options then you can imagine. There are several different manufacturers and I use a couple different types.
