I have to drop a comment to thank you. This was the first video on KZbin that I've seen cover alternatives to trolling for kokanee. I was about to give up a little bit on targeting this species because I don't want to have to buy all new trolling gear or rent a boat just to catch fish. I can definitely canoe out and find fish, so thank you for giving me ideas on how to rig up for this gem of a species!

another awesome video, thanks rod! For this kind of fishing, i usually attach a spring bobber indicator to the tip of my ultralight spinning rod. it works very well for me

Hi Rod do you ever use a rubber snubber to take some force away from the fish striking? Especially for Kokanee since they have very soft mouths and you can actually pull the hook out

you should make a video of you fishing the coquitlam river for trout or pink salmon. the pink salmon go through it in late July and august. fly fishing works really good there. please use this suggestion. there is wild and hatchery trout ant there is rainbow trout and cutthroat trout. so float fishing for trout with pautzkes balls o fire would work really good to. so that is a pretty good pink salmon or trout video. it would be really interesting.

Appreciate the tips! I'm going to be trolling on a little Colorado XT I just got last weekend. I'm hoping to land them that way. However, some times Lake Chelan can get pretty big waves going 3' last weekend and it was tossing me every where. This gives me option 2 if that happens again! Thanks!

You don't want to anchor from both ends of the boat in big waves... you can get swamped... just anchor off the bow and the wind will keep you pointed mostly in one direction... most of the kokanee in Chelan are in pretty deep water that would be hard to anchor in... Mill Bay would be shallow enough, but is wide open to the wind... for me, 3 ft waves on Chelan means get off the water and it is wine tasting time :-)

Hey Rod, great videoes as allways. Im following your chanel all the way from Denmark. You have some awesome fishing overthere in B.C. I noticed in this video that it starts to rain during your speachs. I was wondering what you uses for water protection during filming?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
TroutHunter-Productions With a towel. ;) These days I pretty much just let the cameras sit in the rain and wipe every once awhile if need to so I can get the filming done. I used to be pretty paranoid about it but after cancelling filming due to rain so many times, I've just decided to not worrying about it. I've dropped more cameras in the water than having a camera dying because of rain.

Another great video. Do you use fish finder when you fish in the lake? If you add a float in this tactics, it should also work well, right? I once visited Lake Tahoe in NorCal, I saw people fishing kokanee in that lake. That was my first time seeing kokanee salmon.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg, yeah I use a fish finder/sounder for this, which is actually quite important when determining success. The sounder serves a couple of purposes. I need to know what depth I am fishing at. These fish tend to school at a particular depth. In this case, 38 to 42ft is the typical depth. I also want to see fish on the sounder from time to time, so it shows me that fish are schooling and swimming through the area. Float fishing for kokanee works, but at 42ft I prefer to fish without a float so the bait is placed more accurately at the specific depth where I want it to be.

Great video Rod! I do have a question though and I hope you will answer it. Why not tie a dropshot rig vs the 3-way swivel? Seems like a lot less hassle with tangling and quicker but I have no idea how fast you can tie up! lol
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 5 жыл бұрын
Good question Troy! I have tried the dropshot rig as well. It certainly catches fish but I have found it not as effective. The leader seems to allow the bait to freely suspend a bit more, so that may be the difference. I also find that both rigs tangle up just as much. Kokanee jump and roll too much, every single fish almost always mess up your line. Thanks for watching! :)
@troypattillo4100
@troypattillo4100 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I can see your point with the bait given freer motion. I love dropshot for smallies and recently started using it for ice fishing when the jigs are 1/16 or smaller. Very effective but I'm going to give your method a try this spring. Tight Lines!

If you dont have a finder how else could you locate fish?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
Pedo Doge With fish schooling at 40+ ft deep, there really are no visual cues which can suggest where the fish are, so a fish finder/depth sounder can improve your fishing results significantly. Your only other options are to anchor near other boats which are doing well, or try spots where fish are commonly caught based on local knowledge.

When would you say kokanee start to move into streams and creeks running into lakes to spawn? Iv always wanted to catch one when their colors are vibrant
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
Adam Miller Kokanee, like most sockeye salmon, start spawning in September. With that said, it's not recommended to be fishing for them in spawning creeks. Spawning fish should not be harrassed, that's why no fishing is implemented in most spawning channels.
@haydenveals6227
@haydenveals6227 6 жыл бұрын
In most US states (or at least in Washington) it is illegal for you to fish salmon from a spawning creek. For other salmon, where they come into a larger river much farther from their spawn, and requiring that they have enough of a population, you can river fish. I don't know what the fish and game laws in canada are exactly, but I'm guessing they are very similar.

When I went to the deli and asked for deli shrimp I was told to go to the sea food counter or the freezer. I asked the Sea Food counter for deli shrimp and they asked what kind of shrimp am i asking for.... The raw shrimp and what size or the cooked shrimp like cocktail shrimp. What size is the shrimp? Small, Medium, Large, Jumbo? Also are you using raw shrimp of the cooked shrimp before you put the fire cure on?

1)Hey rod, what time is best to fish for kokanee in mid july? Im guesing morning works better for temps? I decided to take your guys' advice and bought 2 anchors lol. 2)Is a size 3/16 croc spoon too big? or will it work similar with a 1/16?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
Mark Almadin They can bite anytime of the day really, it's not really an early morning fishery. The key is to find them on the sounder. If you can mark a couple of fish on it and start fishing and get a few bites, then more often than not they'll keep coming by throughout the day. 3/16oz is pretty big, but it should still pick up some fish. I've seen guys using fairly big lures and still get them that way.
@MarkyMark145
@MarkyMark145 9 жыл бұрын
wow thx rod! You've inspired the fisherman in me. I don't have a sounder so I will have to try my luck. Perhaps trying different locations might help increase my chances. :D
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
Mark Almadin Don't be discouraged if you don't have a sounder. I actually fished for them without one for 4 years and did reasonably well. I'd mark your anchor ropes at every 10ft so you know how deep you are fishing. Also look for boats that are catching fish. Good luck! :)

Mark Almadin Nope. Never. You will never catch a fish without an anchor. Ever.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
justanotherbum007 That's right. In fact, the more anchors you have, the more fish you'd catch... ;) Mark Almadin Without an anchor, you'll be drifting especially on a windy day, so you won't be able to bait fish on the bottom like what is being done in this video. You can troll a fly or lure instead if you are anchor-less.
