Unboxing the Koken 72 tooth ratchet. One of the best ratchets you can buy.

Be careful, that ratchet seems cheap, but it’s the gateway tool into the Koken world. the price shoots up dramatically when you go for the flex heads. I really love this tool company and my only regret is not getting into them sooner.

Your definitely gonna love it. I bought the same one for like 40 bucks. Used it once and ran out and bought the long handle flex. Then grabbed the 3/8 drive flex head on a 1/4 body and its freakin tiny. Absolutely love all 3. Koken 100% rivals snap on ratchets

@@ToolDemos surprisingly..kokens new 72 tooth ratchets have lower back drag than snap on ratchets. I've been reaching for my kokens over all my snappy ratchets more often than not.
@RedShiftedDollar

That ratchet paired with the z series extensions and sockets has very little play between the anvil and the socket even when using multiple extensions daisy chained together. It's really designed to be used with the Z series tools because of the way the fit holds the socket snug against the ratchet. There's no torsional slop between the anvil and the socket either. It's snug in all degrees of freedom. So you're combining the lowest backdrag ratchet in the industry with most precise fitting extensions and sockets for arguably the best total packages in the world. I wouldn't use them for high torque applications though because of the thin and tiny construction plus the lack of a stress relief chamfer at the base of the anvil.

Koken has priced it right for now. If they had a supply and support chain like the tool trucks, then I would be comfortable using it as a workhorse. As it is, it would be a phenomenal low clearance ratchet, spark plugs, etc.

Thanks for showcasing this particular ratchet. I've been thinking about getting a 3/8 Koken set for my motorcycle work. I like the in between 1/4-3/8 form factor. I wouldn't use it for anything heavy duty and mostly for the sake of using a nice quality set instead of my hodge podge of old Chinese and Tawain stuff that has accumulated over the last 30 yrs.

Prices over the past couple of months have ranged from high 30's to low 60's. I was lucky and caught it on a dip at $41. At least $13 less then the next lowest price I could find online. Ads are sometimes confusing b/c the sellers are sometimes posting pics of the older 36 tooth, yet the model #'s match the newer 72 tooth version. Nice addition, and looking forward to getting more...

On Koken pricing... A few years ago I picked up some Koken sockets at about US $8 each. (Cheaper than Taiwanese-made Kincrome). And a 12" breaker bar was on special at about US $15. But buying the Koken 3725Z 72T ratchet this year in the land of Oz set me back US $79.

I have Koken’s flex 72T 3/8 ratchets in regular and long. I may need the non-flex 3/8 regular length at that price. Just to round out my collection. Koken makes the best 3/8” ratchets. The 72T just have not been out long enough to prove themselves.

@@ToolDemos Koken’s flex are all I use in 3/8”. They’re non locking. They use a spring loaded nylon pad to add friction to the joint. I avoid locking flex head ratchets. Because the lock breaks first. With the lock you can’t tell that you’re applying force in the wrong direction. But in the short ratchet I think flex may be over-kill. Maybe I’ll get the 3/8 stubby.

Koken did not mess up and under price this ratchet. Bank of Japan messed up and bought too many US treasuries. YEN is at all time lows. Bank of Japan is now going to unwind those U.S. treasury purchases and realize massive losses. This goes way beyond auto mechanic tools.

The joke is the price because with the power of the interwebs these days, no reason to get shafted by the tool trucks. People have different reasons to buy tools so no need to by a ratchet 4-5 times the price when it's not needed. Buying snap on is only to impress the boys in the shop.
