the way they came out and the reception they got from the public truly gagged me!!!! that throwback vibe they have and how everything just looks so minimalistic compared with these crazy 4th gen we get, is crazyyyy and so fresh!!! and the fact they just look like teen girls doing this for fun, the sound is so youthful but there's that nostalgia feel with that early 00s sound 🤯. I'm living for them, they're on the right track!

Personally, as someone who was singing along to some really not great songs growing up (first one coming to mind right now is Right Round- Flo Rida) I can understand some of the controversy, but I think some are taking it way too far, especially since all I've seen is Koreans thinking it's a cute teen love song

I understand your pov, but I think is really different growing up listening to that type of songs that are performed by adults than by minors. The controversy are the lyrics that are accompanied by minors singing it :/ I was shocked with cookie bcs even though I am not a native english speaker I noticed the double meaning.

Honestly I think I'm just feeling bad for the girls who are having this song meaning changed and perceived as inappropriate and bad by most people who can't understand the meaning and nuances of the song in language it's sung in (I personally cannot speak Korean and can't know what the tone of the song is either) if that makes sense? I don't know, it just feels really unfair to the girls especially if it's just a bunch of us foreigners making it weird, you know? I totally get your point though. Nobody wants the girls put in uncomfortable positions in an already predatory industry. Everything sucks is my take away lol

The Korean lyrics may not be as straight forward as the English lyrics but they still have the same feeling .AND the fact that this song was originally written in English makes me think director knew what she was doing 🤨. I’m going into my 5th year so living in Korea and one thing I have learned is things like this will be swept under the rug as long as it is presented in a pretty way.

the most ”negative” korean comments i saw was saying it was a bit nonsensical like fx’s RPPP but other than that it was just cute, it seems to me like people are trying really hard to paint a perverse aura around them to keep people from stanning them out of fear of being called creeps all because they saw them as competition to their faves which ironically hurts the girls further by forcing this creep association to their image when it was nowhere to be found in their concept and aesthetics

Looking at the credits for the music/LYRICS, Ylva Dimberg , a Swedish producer. So the English lyrics are likely not mistranslations but the original lyrics from the demo. Like if you compare the lyrics from the English and Korean versions of NCT 127’s Highway to Heaven. The Korean version was def more innocent

they're supposedly describing their own content with "cookie" bc in korea "cookie" is the word they use for like extra scenes at the end of movie and such... if you think of the cookie they're describing as their music/videos/etc, then the metaphor does work... that being said - the metaphors fit wayyyy easier with *that kind* of cookie... so honestly i'm not convinced that absolutely no one in the entirety of ador and hybe had any clue whatsoever that this song could easily be interpreted as seggsual. maybe it's one of those situations where they want the song to appeal to the masses (which is undeniably obsessed w seggsual innuendo) but also want a passable excuse to fall back on if anyone pointed fingers

How did the korean public react? They've been dominating the 4 charts for an entire month straight. There was a day blip when bp dropped but they took it back and a cpl charts Ive has taken the #1 song but again.....theyre either 1,2, or 3 on all 4 charts A MONTH IN. It's kinda crazy given how relaxed and not aggressive their marketing and intro was.

Trust me. You'll get hooked on sections of their songs. I was never into Kpop. I kept hearing clips of their music on tiktok and instagram and looked it up. Now I'm hooked on the verses and chorus for Cookie, the vocals and bridge for Hurt, and basically all of Hype Boy and Attention.

Let me expand on the question of their producer. Her name is Min Hee Jin, a maverick artist in her own right. She was the creative "brand" consultant for several groups, burned out, and didn't come back until she was given total creative control to create a new group. Even the idea of dropping "Attention" cold without any teasers or hype was her idea. Nobody in K entertainment knows exactly what to make of her, but following her instincts has resulted in the biggest debut since Blackpink. Nothing shuts up the critics like success...

I love Attention. Honestly, I'll be working and all of a sudden I will start singing the chorus. It is so catchy and definitely has a 2000's feel about it. Hybe Boy is good as well it's also catchy. There are multiple videos and has different storylines for the girl's. Nothing too complicated but I do think it's cute showing infatuation and how someone can make you feel. Lyrics are average but it is still a catchy song. Hurt shows off their vocals the most and again this song will pop into my head because I think I can sing and end up scaring my dogs while trying to sing. Now for Cookie... I've been reading a lot of comments and it looks like the English translation makes the song sound suggestive than it actually is. Which is very unfortunate because Cookie, again, is a catchy song. Now with this translation that we do have if...Sistar was still around I would love this song. If it was mamamoo-afied I would also love it. Grown and sexy women talking about grown and sexy things. But due to the translation or misinterpretation of the lyrics it seems like a very suggestive song for very young girls. And I'm trying to be nobody's big sister or nobody's auntie but damn: I'm just like why did this happen? How did no one realize this would happen? I understand dufferent cultures and how nicknamed for things are different or unknown but dammit why??? Unfortunately, Cookie is a catchy song but I just feel weird when listening to it so I usually skip it. With all of that out of the way, I really do enjoy their music and that they already have a style which is definitely different from the other 4th Gen. group's. As far as the taking the 2000 inspiration not just with the style but also with their music. At least to me.

Honestly what’s really sad about Cookie is that most people will analyse the lyrics without analysing the Music video, the message they wanted to convey is very clear in the MV > cookie=CD. From the choreography, the outfits, the visuals art contents there was absolutely nothing “sexual” yet not once in your mind will you reflect tell yourself ok that’s what it makes me think about but maybe I am wrong?, especially knowing they are teenagers. You know the labels, productions team surely took the risk to release that song knowing the misinterpretations it could get, that’s probably why they took the time to explain beforehand the meaning of the song. If you still dismiss that then you are projecting simple as that, based on your cultural references. At the end of the day, things are only sexual when you make it sexual.

You mentioned that kids have always sung along with dodgy lyrics, and referenced Rude boy by Rihanna as an example. I totally agree with you that this has always happened, and will probably always happen, and it doesn't really matter that much since they don't really understand what the lyrics mean anyway. The problem I have with Cookie, is that the artists themselves are at the age where they shouldn't be singing those kinds of lyrics. And when the label makes them sing these kinds of lyrics, they are intending for older people to understand the lyrics, and in that way market them in a sexual manner, which is fckd up since the youngest I think is 14. In your example, the artist is an adult. We can't really stop kids from listening to songs with sexual innuendos, and singing along, but we can and should stop kids sing those kinds of songs as their career. Anyways, their songs are bangers, and I have added the other three to my playlist. Even though Cookie also sounds good, I don't feel like supportting that kind of song for such a young group. I hope others will do the same.

As much as im excited to see what they will bring, can’t help but still feel so worried. Like other idols have mentioned so often how they wished they weren’t that young debuting. 90% of their fanbase in korea and internationally are woman in their teens-20yrs old. korean newjeans stans confirmed this when they attended their fansigns, and popup store. not that women can't be predatorial, but im just saying. i am concerned even if it was just one man who attended. we hope ador adds age restrictons.
