KOL, WHEN mahorama was punching the air chasing Sukuna, i, when the Shinigami adapted, he was able to see sokunas technique, so what he is essentially doing is punching away his slashes. In hindsight they should have been visible so more people could catch on to this.

I think that would defeat the purpose of the adaptation. Sukuna’s technique is not only powerful because of how lethal it is but also that they are invisible to regular curses spirits, jujutsu sorcerers, and especially regular humans. I think those scenes where you can’t see the slashes are supposed to give you the POV of a regular person in that world

If you're wondering why Mahoraga kept waving at the air, it was because he was usually expecting Sukuna to do his cleave. Whenever Sukuna's uses cleave, Mahoraga starts punching so that if he loses a limb it will go flying at Sukuna. That's why you see Mahoraga's arms being flung at Sukuna in the earlier part of the fight. However, Sukuna actually feints his cleave while Mahoraga keeps punching, expecting a cleave to happen so he can launch his limb at Sukuna. Mahoraga actually does adapt to this and ends up doing a feint of his own at 15:27. The reason why Sukuna actually smiles right before being punched is because he technically taught Mahoraga how to "lie" by feinting an attack, and he takes this as corrupting the "Divine" general. That's why he smiles during that scene.

He was faking Dismantles multiple times. We as the viewers are literally told when he uses D or C by the visuals and/or sound. There are multiple instances of Maho "blocking" because it can't anticipate a Dismantle until it adapts and actually goes on the offensive once it realizes Sukuna's movement doesn't correlate with the activation of the technique but the build up of CE output does.

So sukuna is not faking punches he is just doing his slashes and mahoraga is not punching air he is punching and trying to counter those slashes and he is able to do when the wheel moves for him
