This was handy to learn what wasn't my problem. I traced my problem to the "flush or trap handle" after exploring the problem suggested by this video. Kohler has a mechanism that fits into a square hole on the outside of the toilet. The actual chrome handle has to be able to move through this mechanism in order to full and release the chain. After time the plastic mechanism can expand and tighten down on the small metallic pipe that actually goes from the handle to the metal (or plastic) rod that attaches to the flush chain. My fix was to gently drill out the plastic locking section of the "flush handle mechanism" so that the metal rod was no longer hanging up when used. This allowed the mechanism to work properly and no longer hang up when flushing the toilet. No more annoying running toilet. I haven't seen this mentioned on any other Kohler repair video so thought I'd post it here in case anyone want to update their presentations.

Thanks! Readjusting the seal worked (you might not have to replace it). Keep in mind that turning the cylinder is hard so you might feel like you’re breaking it.

I simply flipped over the rubber seal, wiped it off a little, and also where it contacts the base of the tank around the hole, and it's worked so far at no cost.

A million people give instructions to replace the seal on a canister flush valve, but nobody shows how to replace the canister itself. I’ve replaced the valve so many times I could do it in my sleep. Wow! That was easy! My house got flooded with storm surge from Hurricane Ian (Sept 28th '22) so the entire area of homes have to have the walls and cabinetry torn out and redone. I scored a Kohler toilet that a neighbor had set to the curb for FEMA to pick up. I plumbed it in this morning and darn if it didn't have the exact problem you covered here! I popped the offending gasket loose all the way around the groove. It was very compacted in that slot so I just stretched it out all the way around and reassembled the center part of the tower and the seal is perfect. Thank you for the well explained simple fix. I would suggest folks just doing what I did first before spending for the new gasket.

Thanks for this. First I changed the gasket at the bottom of the "flapper". That did nothing. What did stop my running toilet was to rinse out the fill valve. Took ten minutes!!!! The best part was it didn't cost a penny! Kohler has a video on how to do it.

This is exactly what my running toilet looked like inside. I replaced the fill valve with a Flowmaster universal, $20 at Home Depot, and now it’s fine. So easy to install too. I’m a 67 year old widow whose husband used to take care of this kind of thing. If I can do it, anybody can.

Thank you for this great tutorial. After Farther's day dinner 2018 at Mother-in-law's home here in the Philippines, my beautiful bride asked if I could take a look at her Mom's Kholer, it would not fill. The unit in question is a little different design than your demo unit, with a push-button built into the lid rather than a flush handle on the side of the tank. The fill valve looks like my best friend the Fluid-master. Five minutes with you and about 90 seconds watching a Kholer factory repair video on the fill valve has given me all the information we will ever need to keep the fixture in top shape. Now, we cross our fingers the seal will be in stock tomorrow if needed? Always best to know how something is supposed to come apart for repair rather than using excessive force and destroy parts.
