Bengali cinema was excellent from 1950s to 1990s. There was a Bengali sports film called Kony (1984) it was better than Aamir Khan's Dangal. These directors made excellent Bengali films 1) Satyajit Ray 2) Mrinal Sen 3) Ritwik Ghatak 4) Aparna Sen 5) Rituparna Ghosh 6) Tapan Sinha By the way Benjamin should get himself an Indian girl and she should be like Damini Rizvi Roy, then he will get great Indian cuisine at home.

I'm from Meghalaya but somehow I really love Kolkata. Only been there once 3 years ago but love the city and this Christmas I am again visiting the city on a solo trip, I will get more time to explore the city and its sub-urbs and hopefully able to meet cool people around. The best part of Kolkata is its cheap and tasty beers and alcohol, can't wait to go and explore all the cheap pubs in the city again this Sunday and for the next 10 days in Kolkata.

Please visit Eco Park, and Mothers wax museum in New Town. Go to Millenium park, take a boat right from Babughat to Howrah Station on the public ferry Enjoy the pubs at park street. Enjoy authentic Bengali cuisine at Bhojohari Manna, OH Kolkata Peerless Inn Aheli, etc.

If you have had your fill of Kolkata , check out Chandonagar ( French colony ), Sreerampur (Dutch colony), and Bandel .. also try A typical bengali lunch at Aaheli ( Peerless Inn ,Esplanade)or 6 Ballygung Place. If you are Kolkatta during Christmas and New Years Park street with friends is the place to be but it's going to be horribly crowded. A local boat ride on the Hoogly in the late afternoon is enticing. Also the races on a weekend afternoon is an interesting activity to do. Also check out the the Marble Palace Museum. Cheers.

I live in Santoshpur, just got back from Wisconsin, and not too far from your place. Just reply if you want to check out niche cafes and historical places. There are theme cafes like Ms Magpie, a boat museum, newly opened museum in the famous Alipore Cellular Jail. Prinsep Ghat is a cool place for all ages but I think you'll enjoy the entire region of Maidan and Equestrian clubs. Next for Kolkata Biriyani there are very specific spots which cooks both the potato and the meat well. Try to go to North Kolkata which is essentially the oldest part. This place needs a guide to properly figure stuff out, I'd do it if I were free. College Street/Presidency is a must. For the best dumplings experience go to Tiretti bazaar early morning at 5-6 am.

You can visit Salt Lake, Newtown, Em Bypass ( eastern part) for new modern araes....Central and South Kolkata is kinda mixture of Modern and old culture.... North Kolkata is kinda backward and old...but can fulfill the cultural context about Kolkata. Some areas of north Kolkata is very old..but if you are a culture lover then you can visit there..the old Kolkatan house structure and super narrow roads..which can give you a cultural shock.😄

Well actually, Kali Pujo and Dipaboli are two different celebrations, not related to each other at all, even though celebrated at the same time. Kali pujo is the worshipping of goddess kali, who is just another form/avatar of Durga. And Dipaboli/Diwali is the celebration of light. Dipaboli also celebrated for three different reasons in three different parts of the country. North celebrates it for the arrival of Ram's arrival in ajodhya, south celebrates it for the krishna's defeating of narkasur and east celebrates it to welcome goddess lokkhi into their home
