That's a new thing I noticed a lot of younger musicians are playing arrangements and having to read them on the job instead of free flowing playing of good tunes and creating arrangements as a result of playing together as old masters used to do. I've seen great many duos in NY. Bradleys, Knickerbocker, Zinno's etc. and not one piece of music most of the time.

While I agree this is a desirable status quo, I think in todays world freelance musicians rarely play with the same peers on a day to day basis, so playing a common repertoire is very difficult !
