Hi Court, I just wanted to drop you a note! I’m really glad you did that review, which is, by the way, very thorough. It is quite challenging to order a certain ebike at the moment, especially out of the ordinary ones like the Cannondale Quick Neo for example. Which was my first candidate. I then headed for the Canyon Precede, which was out of stock also. Then I saw the Kona in the shop next door, made a test ride and ordered it right away. The last one on stock. Very happy now, thanks to your passionate work! Best regards, Udo

When you review these bikes. Can you justify the price point on them. I want to know where the big price point is. To me, it is just a regular bike priced at $600-$800 and then $2,400 for the motor and battery? I don't get it. Please help me understand. Am looking to upgrade my HVM Hamburg. Paid $875 for it about a year ago

Update, Ok, hidden battery plus pain with the battery removal
@ElectricBikeReview3 жыл бұрын
I think the higher price comes from dealers, four sizes, integrated battery, premium Shimano motor vs the lower rated one, and the fancy drivetrain (swore 10 speed with unusually wide cassette 11-46t). The brakes are an upgrade too, but not as high as the rest. To me, Kona is recognizable but more boutique than Trek or Specialized, and it’s not as premium as Riese & Müller. To save money, consider a kit to convert a bike or get one of the Rad Power Bikes, Magnum, Surface 604, Blix etc. for $1,500 to $2k. It will weigh more and only come in one size, but that’s okay for most people from what I’ve seen. This was more of a sporty city bike for people who are more active and interested in some style too.

I had their Cindercone back in the mid 90s. Good to see they’re still going strong with the ebikes now. ‘Take two with Dr Dew’ as the advert went ..... 😎

Court. Love the color as it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Like that you are presenting both the pros and not just glossing over the cons more now in 2021. It makes for more objective reviews. It must be tough to do that when you review with CEOs/Founders and what not. If the battery was on top of the down tube, it wouldn't be as much of an annoyance with the wheel not getting in the way. My e-bike is in a cramped space, so that would be a big pain using the tool and having to move the tire as well. On another note, have you reviewed the various suspension seatposts ( kinekt, thud, ncx, etc.)? That would be nice comparing/contrasting them. Keep up the good work. 🙂

I enjoyed the review, however you are very kind to the bike, considering those oversights in design, at these prices. It has the potential to be a sweet bike for sure.

Yeah, I really loved some things about this ebike... but there were other aspects that felt frustrating or unnecessary. How did it come off to you Glenn? Was I inconsistently harsh, is there a better way to handle the criticisms I raised?

I still prefer my awesome EVELO DELTA X. Because of CVT, larger display, simplicity of charging. Balloon tires and power on/off interface.

great bike! wondering if maybe size Large feels smaller due to the wheel size (650b instead of 700c).

At $4000 its a hard sell. Its up there with the midrange Specialized, Trek, and Giant ebikes that all feel more refined and faster.

Enjoying my new Kona Dew E DL and your review was very helpful. However, I purchased the Small size frame and while you make the battery removal look very easy to remove from a Large frame in the video, this was impossible to achieve on my bike. Not enough room to manoeuver between the battery and the fender no matter which way I turned the wheel. The technicians at my bike shop had to remove the battery by first unscrewing the casing. And in order to put the battery back in place, they had to remove the fender. Really awkward !!!! For now, I'm leaving the battery in place but when the time comes that I DO need to take it off what can I do??? Would really appreciate your help. Surely, other small frame owners have dealt with this...

Another shortcoming of the Shimano display is its insistence on reverting to speed. It would be nice to leave it on "distance" when following a cue sheet or similar instructions. Also, that silly little button takes a while to break-in & is still way to small & difficult to push. It seems being "cute" got in the way of functionality. It is impossible to use with gloves on.

I can feel your frustration from a thousand miles away. No lock on battery, extra adapter to charge, extra button to start.... just so many things going against it and all of it in the Electric parts of the bike. I own a KONA Libre DL, and I love it, but on this, they couldve done so much better by going with the bosh performance CX. It couldve been priced almost the same. Just a big big miss on this. The batteries cost almost $1k, you cant lock your bike and have 1 part of it unlocked that costs 1/4 of the bike. Thanks for the review.

Do you think that the lack of security with the Shimano battery system might be related to the low rate of bike theft in Japan?

I don't think Torx ("star bolt") is a security bolt. (maybe different in Canada?) It is standard often used for items that need a higher amount of torque, with less risk of stripping the head than on a hex key. I was honestly rather surprised when I finally purchased a new bike that the bicycle industry is still using hex or "Allen" key bolts at all. Torx FTW

I know youre building relationships with the companies but it would be nice to get an AlexonAutos style comparison between bikes in similar price ranges. E-bikes are too expensive not to get the most for your money.

@ElectricBikeReview3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems like ebike prices have gone up recently, and this one is priced above average. I’m curious about the car you’re thinking of though, is it like a trike motorcycle car or something, $6k is crazy low if it’s available in the US or Canada?
@twloughlin3 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricBikeReview It's possible he may be referring to some of the inexpensive electric vehicles coming out of China, such as the Chang Li (google it) and other similar models. They are available through AliBaba/AliExpress. Some states in the US classify them as low-speed Neighborhood Electric Vehicles or treat them like golf carts. $6K is probably the cost after all the tariffs and shipping and such have been paid. You can buy one off an importer out of Utah for $4200-4800 USD shipped to your door. They max out at 30MPH/48KPH. But I think his comment and that of @Stephen Verchinski above are getting relevant in this space. Electric is electric, so why would I buy a $4K-8K ebike when I can find, say, a used 2015 Nissan Leaf with 29K miles for $9K? If these are really to become replacements for ICEs, the price point is going to be an issue fairly soon, I think. Tern, R&M, Benno, Kona, Trek, Specialized and other high-quality bikes are getting as expensive as a used car. If ebikes cannot maintain good quality at an entry-level price point, they will not really become car replacements, just another high-priced toy for the well-off.
