Hyundai's Ioniq Electric is well known for its efficiency but how much more efficient is it than my Kona? Is it worth considering the new Ioniq to gain more miles per kWh, maximising my solar generation been further?
With a great coe. of just .23 Vs .29 for the Kona is should make a decent difference. The Ioniq weighs a fair bit less too.
I've hatched the idea of a "follow the leader" style test attempting to give an impression of the difference. This test isn't scientific especially with a minor cock up on the resets of the trip , but with equal roads and speeds, using SCC often to maintain a decent distance removing slipstream effects and of course equal temperatures and warm up times, I'm happy this result is within a few percent.
The result astounds me.
Just 0.1 - 0.2 mls/kWh difference and thus is with the bigger, heavier 64kwh Kona. The 39kwh is rated 0.3 mls/kWh more efficient!!!!
Upon driving home after test, I achieve my best even mls/kWh with a warm battery after a rapid charge. 7.4 mls/kWh over 9 miles. Apparently Justin has never seen a number that high on the Ioniq without cheating.
It's clear therefore the Ioniq and Kona are virtually equal in efficiency at slower speeds and the Ioniq only starts to outperform the Kona as speed increases.
Even now a few days later I shocked and proud of my Kona. What a car.
