I've been using the rock method for years. I learned from you all the way back, and so far never had troubles. It's so easy, safe and quick. Thank you.

One of the most common problems in these early 90s Konami PCBs with the faulty capacitors that leak often

Been watching Luke's channel for years. So glad he's still posting. Always find his repair videos super interesting. Rather than emulation, Luke is super dedicated to preserving arcade and console hardware.

Yeah quite a bit of work on that IC custom Amp chip for sure, I was quite shocked when I saw the bottom side of the chip and witness how badly corroded it was. I'm glad that it works and sounds great.

a bit late so playing some catch-up! man yeah the sound rom looked quite rough but glad you were able to get the caps replaced and the rest cleaned up so now it's good as new! I do love watching these I'm certainly nowhere near skilled enough to perform PCB surgery like that so I can always appreciate those folks that can.

Well done on the repair, but in my experience replacing just the electrolytics on the hybrid is often a waste of time (you should also replace with Tantalum caps, not electrolytics), and in this case, despite the leaked electrolyte, etc you got lucky (for now). When it works then great, but even then it's tedious, messy and often unsightly and there's usually still going to be some track deterioration occurring underneath the paint coating (top and/or bottom surface). For maximum ease and reliability the best solution is just to order a modern replacement hybrid, there's at least two people who make them. However, that does involve swapping over the Konami custom ASIC from the old hybrid to the new, and to do that a decent hot air rework station is extremely useful (or some low melt solder to remove the original ASIC intact). Also the replaced hybrid should be socketed, not soldered back onto the board. For a 'socket', take a 64-pin dip (must be the type with 1.778mm pin spacing, not the larger one used with, for example, the standard large 68000 CPUs), cut it down the middle and use each half in the two lines of pin holes. Or you use a pin strip socket (but that's only suitable for modern replacement reproduction hybrids which have pin strips because the flat legs on the original module won't fit into the round pin strip socket holes). Just my two cents. 🙂

I have an old Toshiba laptop I'm going to attempt a cap replacement on once I work up the courage. Its power supply caps have gone bad. I have it disassembled but haven't taken the old caps out yet.

nice to see it working again. to make it easier could you use smd caps in place of surface mount electrolytics

Is there a socket that will fit the footprint? I was thinking 68000 style but not quite right. thx

How hard is it to replace the ROM next to the 054539 ADPCM codec? It may be possible to fully replace the 054321 ASIC in the future. It's believed to just be glue logic for the interface between the 68000 and the Z80, and if that is the case it's an odd place to put it.

There’s a person n eBay that sells a reproduction of this sound chip… but why would you go back with electrolytic caps? There are plenty of good MLCC caps 0805/1206 packages that could be used instead.

What a weird looking chip. is it that way from factory or the caps on it are a repair?
@SlartiMarvinbartfast Жыл бұрын
That's a Konami sound custom hybrid - it's present on a number of their game boards of a certain era. There are a few variations of it as well, the one that's used on most PCBs of that era is the 054986A, followed by the 054544.
@gordonm28214 ай бұрын
The caps are part of original design. In layman’s term it is a circuit on a chip footprint. It was quite common to build all the functionality into an IC footprint then plug it in. You could have soldered it all to main board but one advantage is you could replace the design of that sound output module at manufacture rather that redesigning the main board at great cost / delay
