Whilst sitting down to breakfast this morning and watching another soothing video it made me all kind of nostalgic. You see when I Was a wee nipper the very first computer I had was a Tandy TRS 80 CoCo 3. It had 32kb of RAM (later upgraded to 64kb). It had a tape drive, joystick and was my prized possession. I remember sitting in anticipation after slotting in a cassette and watching a program listing slowly screech it’s way out on an Epson dot matrix printer. I think it all went wrong when my friend over the road got a Commodore 64. We used to fight over which was better, occasionally coming to blows but being young it was all in good fun. The sad thing is looking back it would not be surprising for you to hear I was wrong. We would play Caveman on his computer. It would take about 30 minutes to load so we would ride our BMX bikes to the local store to stock up on sugar laced treats. Those where the days (where being wrong all started but they where the best).
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
I haven't completely figured it out yet, but there's something about things being more available, that makes them less desirable. It's killed the music industry, for instance. If you think about it, way back in the 50's the only way you could hear a song was if you caught it on the radio, or bought the 45. When I was a kid, you had to catch it on the radio and then tape it, then you could replay your tape. My brother once redubbed the same song on a tape over and over again so we could listen to it. There's something about the games being harder to install (like yours loading from a tape) that made you want to play them more! I remember when the DOS games were around, and you could get a copy from someone on a floppy disk, it was like trading crack or something. It was so neat that if you saw a game you liked that your friend had, he could copy it and now you had it. Good times back then, even if you were wrong :)

Just took a break from designing my own PCB and first thing I noticed was this board looked newer than most I see on your show, it looks better made, the software for PCB design really took off during this era, great vid !...I got over forty years in electronics and their "chips" "IC's" whatever ya damm well want !
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
It's better made, but harder to work on :) I've shown some on some of the other videos, but keep watching and eventually I'll show you some of the really early pcb's, the early ones they etched the dies by hand, so the traces are all uneven and everything, it's pretty wild.

Great video again Ron. I don't mind calling integrated circuits as "chips" myself. It seems to be a proper term as they are chips from the old block (wafers). I try to read all the comments as well because we can pick up a lot of useful info from many of your viewers. Besides, I also wanted to say something regarding VRAM testing and it looks like @I wilton brings it to light that testing vram will produce random noise on the video screen due to data being written and read seemingly randomly. Speaking of comments, the one thing I realized is that you respond to each and every comment on your videos. Most other youtubers either respond to a few, put in a few hearts or don't respond at all. A great big Kudos to you.
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
I try to respond to each comment, usually I can't see the responses, to the comments though (I just get too many). So when people make their initial comment I see it but the replies I have to go search for to find. Keep in mind I have over 500 videos up too, and I actually get more views per day, on the older videos, then I do on the brand new videos, cumulatively. so while a few thousand people watched this video today (and commented) more than twice that many watched other videos! It's all pretty wild but fun too, I like talking with people I just don't like when people are overly critical, or their only comment is to nitpick whatever they didn't like about the video, or the game, or whatever.

At 8:06, you have red lines on the screen that’s usually a dead giveaway of a floating pin.. when the image kind of “fades” in and out. TTL chips often “clock” on their inputs when they are floating in a noisy circuit. It never ceases to amaze me how you do your repairs with nothing but a logic probe. You’d be dangerous if you actually used a scope! Here’s a thought. Take a large screwdriver, and connect to ground through a 10K series resistor. Touch the signal inputs and watch for a change on the screen. If you see no change, it’s connected. If you see a change, it’s a FLOATING INPUT. This works because the input will float high or clock. Connecting it to ground will alter the image.
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, so basically when it comes and goes like that it's because an input to some TTL chip is probably completely floating... i'll try to remember that Rick, thanks :) We'll use a scope eventually, I own 3 or 4 but never break them out, maybe I'll get stuck and need to :)
@robj74814 жыл бұрын
Mr Guru, scopes can do things no other piece of signal evaluation can do. You will NEVER see a bad slew rate on a clock or know that a chip is clocking, but not clocking correctly, with a logic probe.
@robj74814 жыл бұрын
Joe's Classic Video Games, remember that your logic probe can TRICK you. Video circuits often have multiplexed signals so you might hear the clock with your logic analyzer and never know that part of the signal is missing. Only a visual examination on a scope can answer that.
@robj74814 жыл бұрын
Mr Guru, scopes are easy. I dunno why, when I taught, my students were always resistant to using them also. I worked at a company repairing casino game CPUs and SMPS power supplies and I was the only tech who used a scope. The other guys fixed power supplies using only component level checking. It was no surprise that I had to help them when they were stuck on a power supply repair and they couldn’t repair CPUs at all... the difference was a scope and my knowledge of how components function as opposed to just knowing when they test bad on a diode checker. To be fair, I have a Masters and engineering experience.
@robj74814 жыл бұрын
Mr Guru, You are 100% incorrect when you say, knowing how components work internally isn’t important. I worked with some very good techs. My observation was, they knew when components were bad, but they didn’t know how they functioned. That was a big advantage when I had schematics, but going in blind, as you often do these days because manufacturers don’t provide schematics, a good tech should be just as adept at doing repair.. if they’re willing to use the right equipment. I used to help them troubleshoot their circuits from across the room. I’d study a circuit and say, do you have this voltage, or this logic level? They’d answer and I’d tell them what component to replace just but studying how the circuit was functioning incorrectly.

As someone who both designs pc boards and repairs them, you should buy yourself some bismuth based solder. It is extremely helpful in removing high pin count ICs. It has a very low melting temperature. You use it to pollute the solder on the pins of the part you want to remove. You blob the solder over all the pins, and it allows you to pull the part while the solder is molten, because of the low melting temperature. After you have removed the part, remove the leftover solder with braid, and you can get beautifully clean pads to accept the new soldering. The product "chip quick" is just an overpriced version of the bismuth based solder.
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
I'm going to try that, I had never heard of it but thanks for the info. I run into this all the time, and I've tried a desoldering station in the past but never could get one that worked right, or I didn't clean it right, or something. I'm going to get some bismuth solder though, thanks!

I call them Chips. I don't care lol. A good find there with the Mask ROM. It looks like some kind of internal failure on the "chip". At first I thought it might have been a hairline crack in a trace. Typically, the upper address lines don't fluctuate as often because bytes are typically referenced sequentially. Especially on program ROM. Each address line is typically a higher power of 2 so the higher up you go, the less it typically needs to change.

I call 'em chips. I don't know anyone who complains about that.

I had a guy a couple days ago get on me because I called a stick of ram a stick of ram. Lots of negative people on the internet.... He said nothing on a computer is a stick. Except a joystick. Or a flight stick. Honestly some people are so full of crap, I don't know why they get so uptight about everything.

@@LyonsArcade To heck with that guy. I've been building and fixing computers for nearly 30 years. I still call it a stick of RAM too. :D

Hey Ron, IIRC you are a bit of a Ms Pacman fan, if you haven't seen it you might like this video about how it came to be: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJmwaYF3grySjLM

You really need to increase your knowledge of basic digital logic. The fact you had a pin with nothing on it does not necessarily mean it is a bad signal - it might be a 'Tri -State' signal, meaning another chip could be using the bus without conflict. The reason address pins are low is to do with address decoding basically the microprocessor is 'talking' to a specific system eg ROM, RAM, I/O, AUDIO etc Check out Ben Eaters 8 bit bread board computer project for some basic info which will be of massive help to you. Lastly, PLEASE try to stop changing chips using a scatter gun approach it drives me mad use knowledge to determine exactly what is wrong and make an informed decision. And get yourself some proper test equipment you can get yourself a basic scope suitable for you purposes for £50 ish

@@LyonsArcade Wow what an insecure prick - I must have touched a nerve. Any bumbleing monkey can 'fix' something by changing out everything they find on the board. An educated persons knows why. Oh by the way 22years experience with Nortel Networks micro electronics test house.

@@LyonsArcade Great fix video. Wankers like this guy are better ignored (but I loved your retort). Keep up the good work!
