Me and my mom bonded a lot by playing video games and it was some of the only times we could get together since we lived in an abusive household because of my dad. I don't know how we ended up with this game, but my mom enjoyed it so much, that even she would play it as an escape; printing off walkthroughs and enjoying the story late at night when my dad didn't bother her. Over time my mom lost interest in video games since life got in the way and my dad became worse towards her. However, I became a huge video game nerd and collector over time and it essentially became my escape and hobby. I randomly found this game at a game shop years down the line and I did the thing my mom wasn't able to do: finish the game. I finally beat this game back in 2019 and let me tell you, it was one of the most momentous moments I had in my life. Even if this game wasn't the greatest to people, it made me so happy to see someone review this game. I hold this game dear to my heart. Thank you for making this video and I enjoy your content so much! It really brings back good memories for me. Also loved piledriving aliens lol

Heads up regarding the Power recharge around 9:25 mention. It recharges quick when slowly shuffling, not quick shuffling. Like gently moving analog stick down opposed to a full tilt of the stick in a direction if that makes sense. NOT whether you move away from opponent or towards opponent
@Treekyboi7 ай бұрын
That makes SO MUCH sense. I always thought it just went faster when i was moving towards them but it makes sense that it’s a directional thing LOL.
@Kaiserdudegaming7 ай бұрын
@@TreekyboiI know it's been at least a week or longer since the vid uploaded- I just got Algorithm recommended today, but having played the game recently I figured I'd let you know that quick correction. Now for a bonus fact: your guards USUALLY fail if you are in motion when the alert goes off, and it's likely due to the guard animation (and state) not being up when the enemy connects their attack. This isn't a guarantee but it's consistent enough for me to say it as a rule of thumb. If you HAVE to move, either after the enemy attacks OR you're sure the enemy won't attack for a few moments. Your guarding tends to be more successful if you're stationary or in a state/animation to where your character can put up the guard (and state) quicker. Again it's not guaranteed but higher chance for Guards to be successful. Hope this helps!
@Treekyboi7 ай бұрын
@Kaiserdudegaming hey i appreciate comments regardless of when a video releases! And that makes guarding make more sense since side stepping works while you are already moving and guarding works while stationary. I also figured out that reversals and breaking throws can be done by clicking a button? Cant remember what one 🤣
@Kaiserdudegaming7 ай бұрын
@@Treekyboi reversal, which you admit rarely or never work and may need at least one full power bar charged (when it popped for me, it was because i had at least one power charged. I don’t know about a partial power charge at the beginning of game), much like escape, rarely work. Admittedly i do not know how to make them work, but i’ve heard (no confirmation) that they happen just by chance and the higher the Reflex stat? Also learning techniques requires being hit by them repeatedly, like Headbutt needed 3-5 times being hit, but basic punches and kicks are quickly learned like 1-3 times? I believe there’s a spreadsheet somewhere to give more info on specifics. edit: Specific Reversals I have seen are Reversal Elbow (grabbed from behind), or random Technique (front-facing grapple). I recall a reversal kick from being knocked down as a counter or reversal but I haven't seen that in years. edit 2: just now got "head kick reversal" on my most recent playthrough edit 3: I'm not entirely sure WHY but I've gotten some successive/successful Rolls against Clone Agents while downed (hold Z to stay down when knocked down) and I'm not sure what's causing the high rate of dodge when prompted. Also Kick Reversal (face-up being attacked from leg). I suspect high reflex may be a factor into Rolling when grounded

The MIB agents (HIB?) are dangerous, but you can learn Headbutt from them, which is one of the best grab moves in the game, able to knock enemies unconcious. Of course, you have to be able to survive _their_ Headbutt in order to learn it, and you'll likely be KO'd yourself in the process. But it became my go-to first attack against most enemies. Often I'd follow that with several stomps to their backs, or I'd wait for them to wake up and grab them for a back-break before they're able to stand up.

Around the time of this game's release, I was making a kind of IRC gaming bot that was one-on-one themed. Being text based, it was going to be a form of complex Rock/Paper/Scissors style where two remote players chose hit/kick/dodge stuff. Each body part leg, (L/R) Arm, (L/R) and torso had independent HP and stat figures to weaken or remove some attack/defense moves with an overall HP for surviving or losing. And while I just gave up on the whole gaming bot before completing it... I ran across this game. And it was like someone had seen my vision and completed it... in a visual format. And I have never seen anything even remotely like this, since. But I did feel justified in seeing my idea from a previous year in action. Upon further playing through this game, I started getting this impression that the puzzle and action parts... were very incomplete. After all, you run around in this massive UFO (I... think) complex... shooting down these basic robot defenses. But... a lot of the 3D environment feels... empty. As if something stronger, more threatening should be there. And yet... the second phase of opposition just never showed up. As if the world was built and the basic foe was randomly distributed. But a whole year's worth of challenging foes was left on the cutting room floor. There is this break point where you are running and fighting this super huge foe that chases you all over the place. As if one idea for a boss was completed. Then the game returns to a barely basic level of getting the job done. Or the fact that there is this area with pictures on the walls. Many pictures on many walls. You come to a barrier. It feels like there should be a puzzle here that works with the pictures. Instead... you open and go through the door. No puzzle. No reason for the pictures. Like they built the simple maze and forgot to put in the cheese reward. And that is what a lot of this game feels like. You go through a massive place, devoid of almost all life. Except when the plot demands it. Then someone comes out of the woodworks to push plot. Or a major foe that works with that one combat style. In conclusion, I always felt like this game was borderline pressed to the shelf. But someone just couldn't let the money invested go to waste. So, they released a Beta version that just barely got the game playable to the end point. And yet won my heart for paying to bring my combat engine into a functioning state. (Well... mine was in a demonstration mode state. Like Beta 0.0001 format, at least. Last thing I did was to mod it into the world's most complex lottery number picker. It produced 'DONOTPLAY'. I kind of stopped messing with it, after that.)

IDK but voice acting audio lines surely were limited due to the N64 cartridge capacity.
@Treekyboi2 ай бұрын
Definitely a reason they probably steered away from it 😂 However if Capcom can give Resident Evil 2 on the 64 full voice acting then surely Konami could have

Hybrid Heaven is nothing like Metal Gear. Metal Gear is about stealth, whereas Hybrid Heaven is all about smacking the taste out of the mouths of alien mutant bio creatures with your bare hands!

I actually appreciate that they said “we are going to make a metal gear clone” then decided to go all in on the combat system 🤣 i love pile driving aliens

This game was surprisingly interesting, specially the combat mechanics. It's weird that this game is so unknown, specially being Konami's (Computer Entertainment Osaka) And no way that cutscene in the taxi at the end is real lmao I was 100% percent sure that was some audio that you put on top of the original

I think a neat mix of two games concepts would be take Mega Man Legends meets Metal Gear Solid, Maybe a idea for a indie game.
@Treekyboi7 ай бұрын
Damn that is a really good idea. Mega man legends was amazing so mixing some stealth mechanics in would make an amazing game 🤩

Remember playing this game with a friend as a kid. The fights were always a bit weird though, we didn't understand the system much, we basically always leveled the same limb and used the same attacks and it worked.. I think the system could have been really good with more depth to it.. like maybe an enemy has a weak spot on the left hip so it's better to use right kicks to hit that spot, but he has a strong left arm that keeps blocking so you have to start with some wrestling to disable it's arm for a bit then hit the weak spot. Or maybe your left leg is super strong so if you do a wrestling trick and flip the enemy over you end up behind it so you can hit it in the weak spot with your left leg without it being able to block. Also why do you have a controller taped to your arm ?
@Treekyboi7 ай бұрын
Those are defs good ideas! I can see why people might not understand the system because i dont even fully think i understand it and i reviewed it 🤣 Also, why not? 😀

This game kicked ass glad to see someone cover it. This game had MMA before it was a thing. I loved the models for the enemies in this game. It has a pretty good twist at the end too. But.....I would call Operation Winback more of a MGS clone than this game, but that's just my opinion.

Hybrid Heaven!? It can't be Seriously thought, regarding the beta footage, my theory has been that that footage was wishful thinking of what the developers wanted in the game, but once they got to work on real hardware they had to make compromises, the final game turned out alright but it's clear at first they wanted something closer to a pure action game
@Treekyboi7 ай бұрын
But it is! Someone commented that the game was supposed to be on the DD drive which would have had more hardware but it ended up on the base 64. So your theory checks out and they probably had so many plans but were 100% limited 😭
@doctorhino87367 ай бұрын
This game was so hyped because N64 was just lacking in RPGs, compelling story driven content and mature content. This game promised all of that so it got a lot of focus. Until it came out and then everyone just wanted to forget about it.
@Treekyboi7 ай бұрын
It happens! I can see why people would have been disappointed if they were hyped for the next great RPG but then you get an RPG-lite. I still think HH was a great game but i also am playing it like 20 years later 🤣

@@Treekyboi I think being in the middle of both parasite eve games, at the prime of the resident evil years and hearing it compared to those really did it a disservice. I did enjoy some elements of it going back to it and it was at least very creative.
