Jim McNeely, the arranger of this one (he's also an amazing jazz pianist of course) deserves a mention in the title of this video...he's as much a featured artist here as Soc. McNeely once wrote an entire big-band album ("East Coast Blow Out") featuring the guitar of Scofield. He also hired Sco to play on two tracks of his first solo album in the late 1970s. Very interesting. Amazing such a young person (I'm 51 so everyone under 50 is a baby) can conduct an orchestra. What young under 50's can do these days will never cease to amaze me. Then can never tell the age of asian women, they're either 18 or 45, can never spot the difference until they get grey hairs. She looks very young though. Scofield is at this point 69 or 70 and still rocking it.

I don't think I have ever seen a professional big band have a conductor before. What purpose does she serve?

I would guess, and this is going out on a limb here, conducting (Sorry lol no but it can happen when the bands don't have enough time to practice certain pieces, deadlines and whatnot. Occasionally Ellington and Basie could be seen conducting when not playing, and obviously later Zappa would conduct his big bands on Waka/Jawaka and similar works, as well as his smaller bands. My knowledge of big bands pretty much ends there other than I like this video and also Dizzy Gillespie was/is pretty cool too). I don't not extremely common except in college/school related big bands, but not unheard of. Also notice the drums are fairly quiet in a lot of parts, so her conducting could also serving as a sort of silent rhythm instrument.

That is a good question though despite my initial stupid answer But I do think it mostly boils down to rhythm, the drums are very quiet so the only real way to for sure stay in time is with a visual aid (unless everyone memorized everyone else's parts, which although helpful would be time consuming)

Thad Jones conducted the Thad/Mel Lewis BB. and later on DRBB. But yes - most of the time the conductors job is done during rehearsal. At concert it is mainly at rubato and time changing etc. conduction is relevant

It brings me no comfort that this Danish audience couldn't control itself after Sco's solo break to wait before applauding in case the tune wasn't over yet. Happens here in the states. I was hoping the Danes might be a bit more sophisticated.
