It is underrated as it's technically better than DKC1 (and a bit worse than DKC2) but what killed it is its vibe. It's clear all the way through it was some sort of side project for Rare (which was at the time working on what later became Banjo-Kazooie) and not as much time was devoted to giving it its very own unique identity. It's still definitely worth playing today, just not as much of a must-play as DKC1 and DKC2.

dkc has always been a top 10 series for me dawg. only reason it's not hailed as one universally by most gamers or the media is cuz it always got overshadowed in popularity by others. but i truly believe it's a top 10 series, up there wit other giants like mgs, zelda, resident evil, mario, final fantasy, team ico, chrono, soulsborne, tlou, gow, megaman, uncharted, doom, half-life etc.

I've played the original DKC trilogy back in the 90s, I remember the frustration caused by the saving system it was terrifying, lots of rehearsals, but at the same time I saw it as part to the games' challenges, never really complained about it, I was more focused on doing things better until I could achieve the goal. I've finished all of them including the lost worlds of DKC2 and 3. One of the best video game experiences I can remember. Happy this trilogy is coming to the Switch.

DKC 2 is my favourite game of all time. The level design, characters, humour, atmosphere, controls, secrets, boss fights, collectibles, animal buddies, soundtrack and environment designs are absolute perfection. DKC is a series with many great games but 2 is out of this world. From the ultra-hype intro screen to the silent, almost surreal secret ending, this is an unforgettable classic journey.

DKC 3 was indeed a fun game, but if you ask me they failed to make a better game than DKC 2, when you compare DKC 2 to DKC 1 you see a lot of improvement. DKC 2 is in all aspects a better game than the first game, it is also (my opinion) a better game than DKC 3, so I have to agree with the comment above mine, DKC 3 was fun but its in the shadow of DKC 2 which is hands down the best of the three games.

Rare is an amazing team that pushed the DK series. But I like how Retro also does DK. Cause they seem like such big fans of the og DK games, but in the case of Tropical freeze you can tell a lot of care went into making it the best DK game ever.

Returns was my favorite. Mostly because it was the first I ever played, but it also had an amazing set of villains, the Tiki Tak Tribe. Personally, I think those guys were the best. They hypnotized the bosses to fight you! How cool is that? And one of my favorite parts was punching the various Tiki Tak Tribe members into the distance. Just like the other games, it introduces new enemies and mechanics as you progress. That's all I have to say.

I actually agree with your ranking completely, though 1+2 are for me intercheangable. DKC2 is my favourite game of all time together with "Ocarina Of Time", but "Tropical Freeze" was so fantastic and of course has a lot less technical limitations than DKC2, so it's so much more alltogether and imo the best 2D platformer ever right now. They kinda both are my number 1, DKC2 my personal nostalgic one and Tropical Freeze my more objective one. ;) But I love all 5 of those games. DKC1 was my very first video game back then and I played all games several times and completed all...though I won't recommend Tropical Freeze Hard Mode for 200%...that was just brutal!^^

Here is the thing about saving your game in DKC. Candy Kong saves it and it's optional. As long as you are able to reach Candy before dying, you're good. In DKC 2, games are saved by Wrinkley Kong via those coins you collect. So there is a fee to save your game. What sucks is that whenever you continue a game save, all your coins are gone as well as the extra lives you collected. Also just like Candy Kong, you can backtrack to save whenever you want. Funky Kong costs coins too in DKC 2.

I find the comment on difficulty for DCKR very odd. It's very much in line with DKC2 and 3 in difficulty, and DKC1 only tops it because of the save system and some BS in later levels that screws you over if you are diddy. I also like how DKC3's much better level design and the memorable gimmicks were overshadowed by soundtrack. Or how you fault that game for re-used backgrounds and the past games did the exact same thing.

Good video, I just had one question. Why do you say that one of the justifications for putting DKC 1 so low is because of its save function when DKC 2 has arguably a worse save system? In DKC 2, you need to buy the saves with banana coins, which means potentially not being able to save the game without going back for more and risking a game over.

Great point. It really came down to the order of the levels for me. DKC has "three packs" of difficult levels earlier in the game (in my opinion). In DKC2, it feels like these "three packs" of hard levels come later in the game. It's a great point you made though. I could definitely see DKC being higher on the list as a result. The coins actually help though, because as soon as you get a funky flights you can go back to the past world save and come back, so the save points are quite easy to get to.

5. DKC 1 - It's not bad, just quite basic compared to what followed. It was a big deal for how it looked, not how it played. 4. DKC 3: DKDT - Not everything works, with some godawful gimmick levels in particular, but its best elements are the series at its best. 3. DKCR - Returns plays it a bit too safe but it's like 80-90% platforming perfection. Some parts of it kind of suck though, esp late rocket stages. 2. DKC 2: DKQ - Genuine contender for the title of best SNES platformer alongside Mario World, Super Castlevania IV and the Megaman X series. 1. DKC: TF - Fixes every issue Returns had, and couples it with the most inventive and genuinely delightful level design in the history of the genre. I don't just think it's the best Country game, I think Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer, period.

I don't see many people hating on that, i like it and I replay it every once in a while but I find it a bit too gimmicky and generally weird with a subdued soundtrack (it's not bad, I just don't dig it) and eerie color pallets. Also, the mountainside theme was better executed in other games, like world 2 of tropical freeze. And the character designs are usually weird too, like the Zinger replacements and the all-over-the-place Kremling designs. Still, it plays well, it sounds and looks well and it is worth at least a playthrough.

I love all of the games. I grew up with DKC2 as my absolute favorite game of all time, but having played the newer titles, I have to admit I enjoy the gameplay and level design in the later two games than the rest of the series. In terms of music, DKC2 would be my number 1, but in terms of gameplay and fun level design: 5. My ranking: (Excluding DKCR since I've never played it.) 4. DKC 3. DKC3 2. DKC2 1. DKCTF I think tropical freeze is the best game in the series for a variety of reasons. - I believe that the level of variety in level themes and atmosphere in DKC2 is surpassed by DKCTF. - Tropical Freeze has the best soundtrack in my opinion if not the best video game soundtrack ever. It really shows what David wise can do without the sound limitations of the snes hardware. - I love the challenge that the game presents, this is actually a very tough platform. - Although Diddy is practically useless due to Dixie kong, I love the variety of play styles you can go with depending on your goal. Dixie is useful for casual play, Cranky is useful for time trials and Funky is useful for newcomers. - The game's variety in mechanics is incredible. Each level throws something new at you, explores that mechanic to it's full potential, and then pulls out a new one before the game gets redundant. - The amount of hidden collectables and secret/extra levels is immense and can keep you playing the game for a long time. - The visuals are stunning and each level is extremely detailed. Take cannon canyon with the penguin enemies going about their day in the background. - And finally, I love how each level feels cinematic. There are awesome encounters, Epic music, and challenging quick paced gameplay segments that almost feel like a grand 3D adventure game rather than a 2D platformer. I enjoy all of the DKC games but Tropical Freeze is definitely my favorite!

I only played the DS port of Returns but imo what made it great was the challenges. Trying to complete the time trials and get all the items meant achieving a certain flow with the mechanics and the stage layouts which you won't get if you just play it to beat the levels

It is actually because of the controls why I never played Returns. So because of this I'm only going to rank all the other DKC games based on my triple criteria: Controls, Difficulty Level, and Music. 4. DKC - Great Music but too easy 3. DKC 3 - Difficult with bad music 2. DKC 2 - Difficult with best music 1. Tropical Freeze - Extremely difficult with great music.

I remember DK2 having a much heavier theme throughout the game compared to DK1 which was much more fun and light hearted. Maybe that's why I put DK1 slightly above DK2. But agree with your points. Plus emulator save states makes DK1 tolerable.

I'd rank them dk2, dk1, and dk3. It's hard to give a fair ranking to donkey kong country 3 because I didn't own it growing up. I knew it existed but I never actually played it until my early 20's. The other two games have a more realistic and natural feel to them, and the 3rd game is a lot like the newer versions. The first two had far better music which draws me into the game. I still find myself playing each of them a few times per year.

I really enjoy Donkey Kong Country Returns: The level designs, the music and the memorable Tikis (They had a solid goal in the game, they are mysterious and pretty cool). The gameplay is awesome and I actually loved the Wii controls. Blowing plants is a small detail but it was a cool addition. 2. Tropical Freeze is just one of the best (if not the best) platformer of all times. The soundtrack is just wonderful, the best of the franchise in my opinion. The only thing I didn't like is the story and the enemies. I thought they appeared just because they needed new enemies but they are not as memorable or important to me. 3. The original Country game is wonderful. Good music, good designs, beautiful landscapes, etc. I've played both the SNES and GBA versions, and They are awesome. The GBA version gave us a short story to see and I actually liked it even though it's pretty simple. And of course... The introduction of the KREMLINGS (I love how cool and charismatic they are). 4. Donkey Kong Country 3 is amazing. I know many of people hate Kiddy Kong but I always thought of him as a cute and funny character (a super strong baby who can skip on water). The boss fights are pretty cool both the SNES and GBA versions. The soundtrack might be the lowest in the Country games but it's still quite cool, I mean Rockface Rumble and Treetop Tumble (SNES and GBA) are really cool, one of my favorites in the series. 5. I know a lot of people might disagree with me. Don't get me wrong. I would play this game a hundred times. The theme of the Kremling Island is AWESOME. But there's something about the level designs I don't like. It's about some mechanics. Some worlds have too hard levels and some others were very "normal" to play. The boss fights aren't as good as the ones on DKC3 or DKC except for Kaptain K. Rool. The boss fights with him are the best in the series (I also loved Kerozene form the GBA version A LOT).

I played DKC1 and 2 recently and 2's save points just make it so much worse for me. I know DKC1 had this problem too but in 2 you have to spend banana medals to save each time in a world after your first save there. I dont know why it couldnt work like Funky where you pay him 2 coins the first time and then its free every time after. This small thing just makes me enjoy 1, Returns and TF more than it since I still dont have DKC3 yet. Like I said 1 was irritating with this towards the later worlds but 2 is notably even more challenging earlier on which makes the problem worse 1. Tropical freeze 2. Returns 3. DKC 1 4. DKC 2 5. Most likely 3 when I get to it All games are great and not much different in terms of quality

DKC2 is better than the other 2 SNES games for one key reason, speed and mobility. Diddy is faster but Dixxie isn't a punishment like playing Donkey or Kiddie and her own additional form of mobility via helicopter hair kinda made her stand out and was fun and actually useful through the entire game. Donkey could jump on like 1 or 2 enemy types that didn't couldn't, but it hardly made a difference and he was always the inferior choice. Same with Kiddie in DKC3, like I bet alot of people played the game didn't even know he could skip on water, all twice that it is ever used for specific bonuses, I didn't know he could do that until looking up how to get a few things. DKC1 and DKC3 just feel like there is a dead weight character, that slows you down and doesn't offer anything to make up for it. The 50% teams weren't enough to make those games bad, and I can forgive DKC1 for being something new, but by DKC3, they should have learned no one liked playing the big slow character if they could help it, having different characters that had different abilities might have been more interesting if they were taken advantage of more in the level design, something to incentivize the player to pick Kiddie or Donkey.

Maybe I would put DKCTF on 1 because of the good level design and challenge. But that is really a tough decision. At the end of the Video where you reach DKC2 I got goosebumps, especially with Stickerbrush Symphony playing. The first three games in the series are very nostalgic for me 😌

DKC Returns is my favorite of them all. The buildup to the last boss is epic it just dose it for me. I much prefer the Tikis over Kremlins or the Snowmads. I also find the difficulty much better than Trolical Freeze, to me Tropical Freeze is the easiest Country game, K levels excluded.

DKC1 will always remind me of being at my grandparents house, in the spare bedroom, just playing this and super Mario. Just hearing that first jungle song.. I'm happy I had cool grandparents that kept an SNES around for us kids to play, and experience these classics. I'm sure a lot of people my age (25) haven't played any of those games. Pretty sure I have a SNES and DKC laying around somewhere too. Might have to dust it off and try to beat this game, finally lol.

In my opinion, dkc2 is the best game in the series. The level variety, the music and the layout are all amazing. Love the game. My favourite SNES platform game without doubt. Dkc2 rules. But all the games are good in they're own ways.

DKC2 is incredible and deserves the top spot, but it also has an even worse “save game” problem than the first game did, at least if you see that as a problem, and you never mentioned it. It too has strings of 3/4 very difficult levels you sometimes have to complete before you can save, but it also imposes even more limitations, like saves (after the first at a location) costing currency, and flying for the first time at a location also costs currency. As a kid I vividly remember the stress of, even having already unlocked the save point in a world, completing some difficult stage but not having enough coins to save and having to backtrack with 0 lives left to attempt to get two coins just to save.

For me donkey kong country returns is the Best kong game; The grafic is cool and the lore is fantastic; I love the villains and how they be defeated; I love it more than tropical freeze, ok the grafic is more better than returns but the lore isn't good for me.

Sorry but you're wrong on first DKC save system, as you can use Fungy's flight and save on other world then fly back after you collect like 20 new lives from first level. First DKC is best game on the series, as it has best replay value just for pure enjoyment, not just challenge to survive play thru. It also has Donkey Kong. DKC 2 has some unnecessary amounth of content & ideas that don't really feel natural or fit into DK universe. They are there just that there is more challenge to play & collect. Play DKC on GBA if you want a good soundtrack.

my number 5: donkey kong country 1 sure its an awesome game and currently the only one i own because nintendo for some reason only released kc1 on the snes classic mini. Number 4: Donkey kong country returns its a great game (i have never played it but it looks awesome i dont just mean the graphics) number 3: donkey kong country tropical freeze it looks very fun and i really want to play it number 2: donkey kong country 2 awesome game soundtrack's awesome the levels are cool and its so good Number 1: donkey kong country 3 this is SO underrated i love almost everything about the game the overworld is awesome the way you enter the cheat codes are awesome (by highligting your file on file select then pressing: L R R L R R L R L R) and you actually have to type the codes

This is the first time I've heard someone call Returns too easy. I honestly find both of Retro's games way harder than the SNES trilogy. I mostly agree with this list, just swap 2 and Tropical Freeze around.

I've just recently been replaying dkc 1 and 2 on the switch, and if I didn't have the switch save features, I feel like 1 and 2 feel significantly harder than returns and tropical freeze. Particularly dkc 1. I don't understand how I used to progress on that game when I was a kid, I died so many times at certain areas.

Fun fact: although most of DKC3’s soundtrack was composed by Evelyn Novakovic ( I think that’s how it’s spelled ), the “Brothers Bear”track was composed by David. Pretty ironic.

please hear me out, kirby needs a 3d game similar to mario but with kirby, same with donkey kong. Also starfox needs a 3d game but on land but when he leaves worlds or levels thats where he's a pilot everything else is like mario kinda. metroid needs a 3d but without first person i hate first person so much, they really need to change that series up (no offense). Pokemon needs to have a change of pace too. Maybe a 3d platforming game with pikachu and ash, and theres a lot of cool moves to do like mario games. And when you fight other pokemon you get to actually fight not like u each do a move. but they should still have some of that for fun. Just my opinion guys, don't hate me please.

While I do agree the country-like songs in dkc3 are generic, there’s some really good ones too. Sure, they don’t compare to the rest of the series but they’re still really good. Like some of the songs almost sound more serious than usual for a DKC game. For example, “Frosty Frolic”, “Treetop Tumble”, “Boss Boogie”, “Krematoa”, “Big Boss Blues”, you name it!
