As a black man I have an opinion on this. I think Kevin Nash is correct. But the person I blame for this presentation is R-Truth himself. Selfishly I wanted him to come in and be a serious wrestler. He decided to turn himself into a clown, so clown it is. He can switch lanes and I hope he does. Ron, my brother, please don't end your career as a clown

@@ceeejaaay1 actually he gave both the New Day and Truth more control over their characters than most realize. New Day went to Vince to stop WWE writers from writing for the New Day because they felt what the writers was giving them was offensive. From that point on New Day got bullet points only. Also, when Truth went heel he basically told us a how he felt about his character, in that it was the fans that drove him to be the comedy act because they would not accept anything else from him.

You can tell Truth and New Day enjoy the shenanigans they are doing. Especially with Truth, it’s given him serious career longevity without having to go through too much physicality. However, it is telling that there was almost a need for these guys to be silly caricatures in order to get over in Vince McMahon’s WWE. Then again, this could go for the majority of minority talent in general.

I'm black and i don't usually go out of my way to call things racist but R Truth's character does bother me. WWE's history with black wrestlers isn't great. They brought back Tony Atlas as Samba Simba as if fans wouldn't know it was Tony Atlas, when Mark Henry first came they wanted to give him the name Silverback, the Godfather Pimp, Crime Tyme was offensive, New Day is a modern minstrel show with their buffonery and when he was a midcarder, The Rock was black enough to be in the Nation of Domination but when he became a megastar he was more Samoan than black in his presentation.

Disco mentions Eugene, and I agree people stayed quiet about that. However, Eugene is a one off gimmick that shouldn’t have been done. Vince McMahon has a long history of racially charged comments, gimmicks, storylines, and characters in the WWF/E. As in, the guy’s been known for this stuff for a better part of forty years. He has a track record in doing it, particularly with black wrestlers. Ron Simmons oddly enough was taken more seriously in southern based WCW than in east coast based WWF/E. In WCW Ron was allowed to be himself and he was given a sincere push to win the title. R-Truth didn’t actually win a serious title until he was in TNA. The WWF/E never had any real interest in pushing R-Truth as a guy that fans should see other than a “spook”. That’s Kevin’s point.

It is not about seeing racism everywhere, but rather people form opinions based on their life experiences and within the context of history. @@philwalsh8975 Raw doesn't get higher numbers because of who's on the show (unless it's the Rock or a tiny handful of others). It gets higher ratings because it's consistently been on the air for 30 years. Much of the audience literally grew up watching it. A 5 year old show written by an amateur with a trust fund can't compare.

Interestingly when Triple H took over, Lashley was the top guy on Raw as US champ, Bianca the top women's champ in the entire company, Street Profits regularly pushed as a top tag team with Ford getting singles push and Omos (like him or not) regularly on TV squashing dudes. Now they're all stuck in limbo with 5'7 workrate white guys getting pushed instead. And the only black person getting pushed is the comedy guy (i love the current R-Truth btw)

He had a time when he was a "serious" wrestler and transitioned to funny haha because it got over big. If i was a wrestler i would rather be R-truth and be a comedy guy because im actually funny. And not be a "serious" wrestler then be made a joke for people to laugh at because its horrible ( Great Kali, Tensai, Vladimir Kozlov etc.) If i could make all that money for just having fun and acting a fool on TV every week yes sir haha

they mention the JBL forcing people back across the border, but the stories I've heard the storyline was pushed by Eddie Guerrero, who convinced JBL to go even further than what he was comfortable with. Especially the story about how Eddie's mom was involved in a show, and faked a heart attack. As far as R-Truth, I honestly believe the comedy is what got his foot in the door, and has lengthened his career.

I can totally see how WWE's gimmicks for black wrestlers don't age well. But I feel like R-Truth is being R-Truth. When black men don't act "urban", and don't talk "urban", they end up being called an Uncle Tom. It's like they can't win. R-Truth has been employed by WWE longer than so many. On top of it he's stayed relevant. If R-Truth started acting totally different fans would be confused. He puts so many smiles on so many faces. Come on, let him do his thing.

Ron came out in confederate uniform, so you are going to have some black people who are going to feel a certain type of way about it. Ron is not dumb, and he knows that there are some black people that don't like his act, as it was mention on MVP's old podcast. At the end of the day Ron has a family to support and I think people are smart enough to know that Ron the person is different from the character (shout out to Ron for giving my brother an interview back during the TNA days). Xavier Woods knowns that some black people have a problem with the New Day and even some of the older black wrestlers (Tony Atlas and New Jack being two who have publicly stated their dislike for the new day). When he admitted it, he had a sad look on his face when saying it, in one of the WWE black history segments when they were talking about 2 Cold Scorpio. MVP and Lashley both used not wanting to be like the New Day on the buildup of the hurt business and even did so in a backstage segment with the new day. At the end of the day the WWE has a very small black audience, so even if it was majority of black audience tuned out there will not be much of an impact on their numbers. Bob Sapp in Japan has acted way worse than Ron and the New Day. The man was comparing himself to a monkey and was having people feed him bananas like he was in a zoo.

Controversial??? Vince made every minority wrestler play a stereotypical character based on whatever they look like
@JetForceFive
@JetForceFive 3 ай бұрын
Vince always presented warped caricatures of people. Races, gender, nationalities, jobs, etc. Big Boss Man is like no cop I've ever seen. Isaac Yankem. His idea of a female's best qualities, or what an Italian or Russian looks and acts like, is pretty well-documented. He didn't do it so much in the early days, because he was accumulating established characters from other territories, but once the late 80s came, it was very much Vince McMahon's personal stereotypes that made it on the shows. Sometimes he would get talked out of something, or his idea bombed so he was forced to just let the performer try something. Kofi had dreadlocks, so you know, he's Jamaican, mon. Nash is pretty spot-on with it. A lot of people were slapped with unworkable gimmicks. But it hits different if you are female, Black/AA, Latino, German, Russian, Japanese, even Somoan's were presented as jungle savages half of the time - basically anyone that isn't a white male from North America got a gimmick that was pretty ignorant. And even then, you might have to be a clown or a male cheerleader.
