I find it unfortunate that a lot of this discussion is focused on "Ryabko is better" or "Kono is better": the reality is both of these people are masters who have developed their art deeply. What we get to witness is a real exchange of learning between two people for everyone's understanding. However, I also think that, as video spectators, we are completely excluded from the massive amounts of information passing, physically, between the two of them. This was a real treat to watch. Thanks for uploading!

Merci pour ces images, très intéressant, rare de voir 2 maîtres apprendre ensemble.
Clearly Kono sensei is being cooperative and nice so Mr. Ryabko can show his ideas......

Pls don't misunderstood...Michael is showing how to avoid to be cut....Kono is trying to understand the above philosophy..it is not a real combat it is not demonstration for who is better. The arguments have no place to any of their heart. (I am making this note cause i have met both of them)
@ChristophePeytier9 жыл бұрын
The DOJO Exactly ! This is not a "I am better than you" demonstration. It is the study of sensitivity. If anyone has practiced with Mikhail ( I did), you know that this is his moto: "Remove tension". This one of the most important achievement in one's life. not just in combat, not just at the dojo, but in one's everyday life: if you can deal with "things" in your life without tension, the outcome is usually dramatically improved.

But then why Kono did this? He does’t need to that I guess. Some one can do it instead of him

But I know, thank you for teaching that. Most people will misunderstand.
50-50.. Number 1, Ryabko's hand cut off..Kono's feint won. Number 2..cut at elbow fold but recovered sword, Ryabko won. Number 3, classic Ryabko disarm, successful. Ryabko won. Number 4.. deception by Kono, stomach cut open.. Ryabko lost.

gekiryudojo Hi Geki-ryu, I was completely wrong. A closer analysis shows Kono won in each case. Number 1: Kono cut Ryabko twice on the wrist. In #2: Kono had already cut Ryabko as Ryabko moved to the side through the straight-cut deception. Kono had a clear right kesa cut from top-right to bottom-left. 3: Same as two, except he had already cut Ryabko the moment he raised his sword. 4: This was the most tragic. If you got to 1:10, you will see Kono cut into Ryabko's liver.. So, there can be no disarm here.. post-death. I was almost going to give credit to Ryabko for cutting himself on #4, but then I rewound and found that Kono had put intent into the cut.. so no. Ryabko lost in this video, and he lost completely.. It would be basically impossible to go against Kono without a sword of your own.. I think. Unarmed is suicide..

While Ryabko tries to get the advantage, Kono would have already drawn his short sword. It takes too long to break the grip.

I get this was all in good fun, but its insulting. Ryabko dances around pretending that he would somehow not be cut by the blade. Master Yoshinori is one of the greatest masters of our generation. Mikhail Ryabko is joke, plain and simple. sorry to be so blunt.
@michman56149 жыл бұрын
No It's not "plain and simple" as you say..Ryabko is no "joke"..To you, the measure is Ryabko who is fighting a master swordsman unarmed and he misses the mark and gets cut and so he's a joke? Really? This is your basis?..If Ryabko slashed back after taking the sword away then what? You really think Kono could get away and do better? Your opinion isn't reality. Stick to what is..Reason and logic is reality..

Stop kidding me.Kono is just bad imitation of Kuroda Tetsuzan.but Ryabuko is just amatuer in JSA.so this happened.
@shoulung9 жыл бұрын
Tetsuzan is probably better, I will admit that. but Kono is very good as well. the world is more than big enough for both masters.
@kingofaikido9 жыл бұрын
shoulung Kono was Tetsuzan's mentor in many ways, especially for jujitsu. Each style of sword is different, with different aims. But, the true test of mastery depends on who is more creative and who more trained. By 'creative', I mean, the one who has thought through the problem sets and found solutions. You don't go into a war without preparation. The same can be said for a sword fight. Knowing yourself is a start, but then, like Musashi said, knowing your enemy is the other half of the battle. Ironically, as few of the intuitive, Zen-inspired, martial artists know, nothing can be left to chance.. If you don't know the answer to a particular move, you might as well give up from the start. K & T are friends, as you may know, but if there was to be a friendly exchange of blades, it's likely they would discuss the problems, weaknesses, and opportunities that emerged out of their interaction, in a cooperative way, over a cup of green tea and some rice crackers.

Kono was not Kuroda Tetsuzan's mentor. even both does not claim sucha things.he just collaborated and trained with Tetsuzan.Kuroda sensei even advised Kono to learn a JSA under a mentor seriously. i m very sorry many ppl recognize Kono as a 'master' despite he does not have any menkyo or even mokuroku in any ryu-ha. most of serious practioner in JSA think he is superficial and not legit.but mass media praised him as a master and he became famous.sadly, since then many ppl took him as a master.

First time i see Mikhail in trouble. See how many times he gets cut, but for some reason the audience laughs with him when he painstakingly manages to get the blade away from Kono, as if he's played a good joke on Kono. Well it seems bare hands is no match to a live blade, who would have thought?
