for real. that's a big part of why I enjoy rap. I mean dope beats and attitude are important and all, but I listen to dudes like G Rap, Rakim, Guru, etc. and I get a huge kick out of listening to their wordplay. It's actually fun to me when you hear a dope rhyme and you're able to decipher it, like a "Eureka!" moment. It's not like a nerd thing, like you're studying it like a fucking Harvard paper, it's just like something you get or you don't. I love that about hip-hop, I thought that was a big part of it.

"there's still guys out there doing it ya just gotta search the underground....." gee diesel, that's starting to become a tired-ass excuse. Lol that's not how rap got its name at all. Ill give you credit though thats a pretty good thought to abbreviate r.a.p. and call it rhythm and poetry. Its actually rap and doesn't stand for anything like that. It started in the 70's with someone talking a message or story over a beat. It's someone trying to convey something to you in that musical style so people started saying go and rap about it. You can probably google it to see where the exact term came from but every documentary I've ever seen has always had the same origin story.

He gave an interesting perspective on rap music just now: "You want your words to be heard". That's really deep, because even if you're not the best lyricist you can still tell your story and have something meaningful to say. So if I met a Yatchy or one of these mumble rappers I would just ask, "what are your words on these songs saying?" Like what are you hoping to express through your music? I'd be interested to see what they would say since they barely use words in the first place.

It's a different culture now, it's Pop Culture now, not Hip Hop...If you were born in the 60s, 70s and some the early 80s you were introduced to Hip Hop as Hip Hop Culture. If you were born in the mid/late 80s & after you were introduced to Pop Culture. That in itself causes a complete separation from the foundation & the elements. The educational process is non existent in the Pop Culture Era! A dude/chic born in 1983 wasn't old enough to intake the beginning of the Golden Era with Ra, KRS, Kane & G Rap, etc...But if they really were passionate about the culture & the music once they were old enough to get hooked (Late 80s, early 90s), they eventually went back to discover & learn about the history of the music & culture. You're not going to find many fans of the culture in their Teens & 20s & even some in their 30s of today who are interested in going back & learning the history & music before their time. Corporations wanted this & they got it! Hip Hop Culture is the Liner Notes era....if you're a part of it, you know!

WCLSmooth I was born into 91 so I basically got a mix of everything and had to choose. I chose one foot In each school to utilize old and new .. but favor older music better than the new shit in terms of content. although I have to be honest about lyricism. it has improved today in the underground as compared to the past era.. especially when you hear tech n9ne or some twisted insane .. you can ignore tech these days if you already heard his older music. but twisted insane is worth a look in 2017

I was born in 1984 and I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. If you were born in 90 and after, then you may not know about real rap, but 80's babies know the difference. Please don't try to play us. LOL

B. Wynn same here, born in 84 and never got it misconstrued and always had an appreciation for real rap, never was on no pop shit growing up. In my house growing up was a super diverse mix of music but it was all the classic shit, from lynard skynard, to al greene to rakim jefferson airplane, jimmi hendrix LL, KRS one, so on and so forth

I first started listening to rap in the early 90's around 95-96. first artist to me were pac and snoop, ive been a fanatic of early rap since, i lesrnt about NWA and their movement then moved to earlier artists lile KRS, Ice T, Rakim, so much back story to hip hop and noe it seems all lost. no one is interested in how it came to be

In hardcore/punk cats were screaming, but the lyrics were all meaningful. Concious if you will. Bad Brains, Underdog, Absolution, Bold, Youth of Today, etc...C'mon!
@lookbovine3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and then there’s the Boredoms... ignorant but genius shit, especially when Eye teamed up with John Zorn in Naked City for very complicated music and lyrics that go from howls to growls, from screeches to screams. Bad Brains is one of my favorites, but it was often meant to be so fast people wouldn’t understand and sometimes had screaming that was purposefully annoying-and it’s great.

Even the party records were more lyrical than the mumble rap songs... "It takes two", "Bust a move", "The Humpty Dance", "Good Vibrations", "Push It", "Ice Ice Baby", "Gettin' Jiggy Wit it" "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems", "Hypnotize" just to name a few.

I agree 100% with everything he said, and that it's ridiculous that the youth would rather listen to something that makes no sense than to an actual lyrical assassination of a beat. However it's hard to say that when we were the same growing up! We didn't wanna hear what the old people were telling us was cool. Nah we had our own sense style, our own preferences, and our own guilty pleasures. As they grow you're gonna catch them start listening to early's 2000 Hip-Hop, then they go into the 90's and so on and thats when they have their awakening to what Hip-Hop really is about.
