www.vladtv.com - Legendary hip-hop artist Kool G Rap and rapper Necro share their thoughts on Lord Jamar's recent comments about "white rappers being guests in the house of hip-hop," with both rappers disagreeing from different perspectives. As a white rapper, Necro explains how the comment is reaching back a few decades to the 80's when white rappers weren't as respected, and isn't reflective of today. On the other hand, Kool G Rap explains how he's seen love from all over the world, from every race, while doing shows, and he respects anyone who has talent.

See when Lord Jamar here real rap Legends, like this say in so many words. Eminem is not a guest in hip hop. Jamar gets real upset and angry as you can see how he scream and yell on VladTV, and he's still talking about it in 2019 it makes him very, very, angry

As black people we get offended by things that are not even offensive. Rap music started in the black community which is obvious we all know this. Nowadays, rap music is for everyone and that is a good thing. Forget your race if your music is dope that's all that should matter.

Learn your shit before you speak, don't get all your info from Jamar. Do your own study. It's just the truth man. Nowadays a lot of people bank on this hip hop culture that was supposed to be an outlet for creativity, not for making millions by selling out. No matter what color you are, thats where the problem lies, also with this shit yall watching keeping you dumb. Watch documentaries about the beginning and start of hiphop, and see for yourselves. drew rivas Since the beginning you say they didnt listen to hiphop. But..In the beginning there was no rap to listen to, it started with dj's extending a break so bboys could get down. But it's true that graffiti was also used by people outside of the hiphop culture, but the culture back then was more broad so to speak. And graff existed before the whole 'hiphop' culture. but of course rapping as well, since there are some older funk tracks where cats were already rapping on it in a way. It isnt black and white.. I think its a more complex melting pot of elements. Like diggin in the crates.. nowadays less and less people dig in the crates for samples, but its in fact a huge part of the culture..its watering down by the minute I think. With the trap shit and all.. anyway fuckit

All music is for everybody. When you perform, the sound doesn't choose which color ears to reach. However, Kool G Rap completely missed the point. Lord Jamar was saying that hip hop is black culture, and he was 100% correct. Jazz is black. Blues is black. Country was black before it became mainstreamed by Whites. In fact most American music aside from maybe techno or classical were invented, refined and brought to the people by blacks. That said, regardless if you emulate a thing, it doesn't make the art EVERYBODYS. When you practice jujitsu, its an Japanese culture. When you Riverdance, its Irish culture. When you Hula dance, its Hawaiian culture. The point I'm making is that Lord Jamar was correct in his assertion that Whites, Gays, Chinese or Eskimos are not going to come in a dictate or define what Hip Hop is. Its more than just music. Hip Hop became a way for people to understand and identify with each other through music and dance. Homosexuality has never been a part of that community. That is not to say that some of the rappers weren't gay, but they NEVER brought that into hip hop. They kept their private life private. The messages in hip hop have always been powerful and the message of spreading and embracing homosexuality is not and has not ever been a message that the communities of hip hop want to send. Whites are a guest in hip hop, and as Blacks have learned, once Whites get a foot in the door, they slowly take over by marketing the White talent and slowly faze out the Black talent. They did it to Jelly Roll Morton. They did it to Chuck Berry. They tried to do it with Vanilla Ice and make him the biggest rap star. How many Black MCs got movie deals and were promoted and marketed as heavily as Vanilla Ice? Eminem undeniably has great ability, but he was marketed and promoted bigger than Dr Dre, a pioneer of West Coast rap and a legend in his community, not the commercial world. And Dre put them all on! It wasn't Lord Jamar deciding anything. Jamar was simply voicing his opinion and the opinions of MILLIONS of people who belong to the hip hop community. Necro could be one of the best rappers ever, but regardless as to how long he's hung around with, how long he's rapped, or who he knows or sits next to on couches, he's a guest whether he likes it or not. Necro is a guest in hip hop and he's a guest in the hood REGARDLESS as to whether he lived there or not. Because in the end, Necro knows that the people he hangs around with might tolerate him using the N-word, but he also knows that there has been times when he's said it in front of the wrong person and got checked for it. No matter how down a white dude is, there will always be those who have a problem with those who don't belong stepping over certain lines and boundaries. And when guys like Necro get the idea that it wouldn't go down that way, all one has to do is take him to any hood USA to the spot where dudes have no reservations about checking a guy like Necro on the spot. And then like magic, you'd see how quickly Necro's attitude would shift and adjust. That's not to say Necro is a punk or isn't even cool with some of the most hardcore dudes. I'm saying that the real stars don't need backstage passes, and Necro and every other White dude or artist will always and better be carrying their backstage pass when they come to the hood. To be honest, in this video Kool G Rap was Necro's backstage pass. The video may have not even gotten 10 views if G Rap wasn't sitting next to Necro. That isn't to say Necro isn't a cool dude and doesn't have skills. Its to say that without Kool G Rap sitting next to him, no one would have cared what Necro had to say and he's been down for over 20 years! That should tell you something right there.

Matthew Colonna Bullshit. Like Lord Jamar said, Blacks don't try to claim Mariachi. Blacks don't claim kabuki. Blacks don't claim Kathakali. Sure Blacks practice many things outside of their own culture. However they know and have the character to behave as if they know that they are guests in other people's houses. Alvin Ailey is a predominantly Black school for dance. Some of that dance is not Black in origin. However, they practice it without pretending that they can go in and dictate what goes on in ballet. They can be practitioners without trying to bring revolutionary change to the already established culture. Same with opera. Blacks sing it, but don't look for statues of a Black opera singer to be erected in Rome because they sing. The love of something doesn't mean you have a right to reform or change a culture that was loved and appreciated before they were ever a part of it. There were a lot of Black musicians and entertainers who felt the way Kool G Rap felt until they found themselves poor and destitute while their White counterparts thrived playing Black music that they learned, emulated and stole from the Black culture. You'd be surprised at the difference in the attitudes from start to finish of those same Black entertainers.

You're the one who missed the point. You're only focusing on half of what Jamar said, which is that Hip-Hop is a black culture. His corollary to that (which was his main point) was that because it's black culture, white people (or any other group of non-blacks) have no right to speak on different topics--they must keep the art of rap within the topics "black culture." To do otherwise is perceived as hijacking black culture, when it doesn't even have anything to do with that. It's just a case of a dude choosing to rap about different topics, and another dude saying, "No no no, that's not allowed. Blasphemy." Bullshit.

+ResoluteRecords I re-watched the video and you make a fair point. It was just my initial reaction. One thing for you to think about, you don't have to be 'that thing' to stick up for a cause. For example, you don't have to be be black to stick up for a black cause, you don't have to be gay to rise against homophobia (after re-watching I now realise Necro was not doing that). We obviously have similar taste in Hip-Hop so let's unite in that. Peace.

It was started by DJs in parks and at block parties trying to keep people dancing by spinning the instrumental hook of a song, constant beat with no lyrics from the artist, MCs (before they were even Emcess) were just the garnish. Literally masters of ceremony, only part of what they did was to kick a couple rhymes just to keep the energy up at the party. Storytelling came later. This white boy knows more about the origins of hip hop than you do it would seem.

Look at it like the military. You can be gay in the military, but that doesn't mean people are going to be cool with it. As far as it being about black culture, maybe once a time, but that time has come and gone. When I was hearing hip-hop in Singapore, Dubai and Australia, that sealed it for me. The reach overseas is just impossible to truly grasp on this side of the pond. That's not really anyone's fault, but it is what it is.

Jamar was not wrong as far as what was said the message. Maybe the way he worded it may have been strong. But the message of what was said was not necessarily wrong. Necro discussed how long he's been in hip hop. A black person or a white person could discuss how long they have eaten Mexican food. It doesn't change the fact that Mexicans created the cuisine. Just because you use something from another culture does not mean that you created or had a hand in creating that culture.

***** Many people in Rap have no idea of the history. They consider this fairly new prison lead fashion phase with over sized clothing and sagging pants what Hip Hop is about. They would have a problem with African Bambaataa who was one of the original creators. So is the actual creator of this genre wrong. How about the R & B singers with pencil leg pants and suits. It idiocy of some in wrap who equate the culture to disrespectful behavior and destruction of communities and violence is the issue. That is not Hip Hop and if you saw Bambaataa's crew back in the day you would know that it was filled with people from every ethnic persuasion. If they want to call it something else then fine but if you want it to be Hip Hop then respect how Hip Hop started.

Rap is arguably for all races, sure. The problem some rappers have though, is that the respect of Black artists who started Hip-Hop may be lost one day. At some point... You have to ask yourself: does skin colour really matter? Maybe this is more common with younger generations, or in Europe, but I really don't think people care about that stuff. I think it's more important who the people were. The majority of black people back when hip hop started, had absolutely nothing to do with starting hip hop. Why not focus more on the people who actually did start it? In case I didn't make myself clear, I'll use an illustration. A white person is the reason why we have smartphones. White people aren't responsible for it. The person responsible for it just happened to be white, but the credit is not shared amongst all white people. So to bring it back to hip hop... Why not just focus the attention on the people who actually had a hand in the creation of hip hop? (For the record, all kinds of skin colours were there from the start. Kool G mentioned Beastie Boys and Rick Rubin, for example. Those are names that changed hip hop more than most black people did. Not taking away from black people. I'm just choosing to focus more on the individual people, and not on the skin colour they happened to have. I think we'll see a lot more of that view in the future. I don't think black people will be forgotten. I just think the focus will be more on the individual persons, and not the skin colour.)

*Kool* is the man, listen to him. But the fact that *Jamar* says hip-hop is a black thang, yea, I can sort of agree with that too. He telling facts. Blacks were the first ones who originally started it, but again, it's universal, hip-hop is a thing which goes for all of us, cause we all livin' in it. I mean, if you feel like telling your own shit, and rapping at the same time, it means you're down to the hip-hop game. You feel like it's the most right way for you to express yourself. Because we're all individuals, have our different opinions about everything, about life in general. If you're talented enough to sing and telling a true stories, you ain't no guest in rap game, how is it possible to be a guest in your own world? So, I basically came to a conclusion that the hip-hop is a universal and anyone's thing. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Coming from a white dude (Not that it should matter)....It's dumb to say that any form of music belongs to one color/ethnicity. Music is an art form and art has no boundaries. But to expand on the Beastie Boys statement...I believe people forget that Aerosmith was rocking with Run DMC back then and that Anthrax worked with Public Enemy. I think people also forget that MC Serch was an important prospect in Nas' career. Most people that seem to complain about it are the same that have no real clue and just look for something to bitch about. We still acknowledge Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Living Color and so forth as rock innovators and icons. Rock never had to do with color. Shit, Bad Brains is one of the most influential punk bands of all time! And guess what!? Punk culture is really, really similar to hip hop culture. They just countercultures with their own twists. To sit here and say that guys like Eyedea, Apathy, Esoteric, Diabolic, Ill Bill, R.A. The Rugged Man, Brother Ali and so forth are just "guests" in this culture is ridiculous. You're the same people that would say that Celph Titled doesn't belong here either because he's white, even though he's a proud Cuban. It's a bogus, superficial statement. Hip Hop was created for and by poor people at a point when music classes were being removed from schools as reiterated on Ice T's documentary "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap". And last time I checked...Poverty has no color either. It started as a form of folk music and graduated to what it is today. So to say someone doesn't truly belong here is just ignorant. Hip Hop has broken more barriers than a lot of genres. And if you claim it, that's something you should be proud of.

As a music critic/music expert at Rolling Stone Magazine in 15 different music genres (mainstream and underground) and a modern music history and sociology professor, I find your understanding and knowledge of music to be right on point. Unlike many persons on youtube and on this comments section, have no clue about the history of music. It's well-known through out the 20th. Century that blacks and whites, blacks and jews, made some great music together over the many decades. To put things in perspective, 75% of all popular music invented in the 20th. Century was invented by African-Americans (blacks), Black-Caribbeans, Black-Hispanic and other people's of color. This is well-known and common knowledge among-st all persons that know their modern music history. Having said this, when different races of people come together to make music and songs as one, this only enhances and brings different dimensions and views of those genres and you usually create something unique and original. Purity in music is over and has been over for many decades now. Fusion, the mixing and blending of genres, creates new and different genres and sub-genres of music. I do agree that certain genres of music shouldn't be fused and mixed, since it lowers the quality of both genres and aesthetically it sounds forced and manipulated, i.e., pop and rap don't mix well at all, new-age disco, techno, house and trance mixed with rap usually doesn't sound that good but a lot of times it does, rock and rap sound superb because both are hard and they complement each other well. I can give many examples here of what works and what doesn't usually work but I don't want to write a book on this forum. I just feel most people need to be more open-minded about music and all other things in life.

They are very welcome guests cuz one of the things that stand out when they represent the culture is their ethnicity. Licensed to Ill worked not only cuz it was nice musically but mainly it was cuz the Beasties were stereotypical white kids repping hip hop through their experience. People can say and think whatever they want about Macklemores music but the one thing they can't say is that he isn't smart, successful or musically talented. I don't see him really as a hip hop or rap artist in the traditional sense what so ever, he doesn't do gangster rap and he's not trying to be! He doesn't seem to be trying to be anything he's not and when you listen to him speak in interviews about his music, career, life & upbringing you realize he doesn't fit into the category as alot of these rap guys. And doesn't try to front like he is. The way that he built and molded his career pretty much on his own by creating, recording, promoting and distributing his own music which has allowed him to become super rich relatively quickly. Plus he's very smart in his song choices as far as marketability. As I said before I don't put him in the rap genre. As far as the topic of 'same love' or any type of music that speaks about gays I don't really care all that much. I wouldn't want to hear it or expect it in rap, particularly gangsta rap/hardcore rap but for someone of Macklemore's musical repertoire I see no issue with it, it was a beautifully written & produced song that became super popular, was palatable for radio (I rarely listen to radio or like the new stuff on it but I respect it if it's good) had a decent message and appealed to so many different kinds of people. Plus gays are a huge chunk of music & media consumers, they partly run shit in the media industry and that's the truth. It was a great career choice to team up with that chunky girl who's a good singer and have her write this song. And personally I'm attracted to smart men who are true to themselves in whatever way that be, which includes being secure enough in their sexuality to be able to make a song about same sex love like this for OTHER PEOPLE and not be phased by it. That's not to say that the guys who don't do songs about gays aren't secure or are homophobic but I dont mind him doing it and I think it's sexy. His wife is lucky because theyve been together since before he was famous, stayed with her after, took care of her sick mother, married her and had a baby together. It's not always about how 'hard' a man is and that's not what makes a man either. Some women stay into bad boys their whole life and usually doesn't get them far especially when they get in their later years.

HIP HOP is for outsiders of all kinds, SHOW RESPECT FOR EVERYONE PLEASE! and in my opinion, it started at a "Back to School Jam", hosted on August 11, 1973, at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, and the real pioneers were innovating and building this street culture in the 70s and 80s.

also, because Yelawolf tried to parallel white people as guests in hip hop with renting a home. You can't renovate a home you are renting without the owners consent. When hip hop first started it was heavily scrutinized by white people, more so than other genres of music. Now that its influence has grown, the same people and companies that shat on it before, now want to invest their money in a way to pimp the culture. White people hear Lord Jamaar's comments and get mad as if its more disrespectful to cal them guests, rather than to point out the execs who are most likely making more money than the originators of the genre.

Hip Hop comes from Black\African American culture and will always be that . It is a universal to be fascinated and passionate about something as amazing and energetic and world changing as HipHop has been since day one . It is amazing that all races creeds and folks of all ages are represented in it , it binds them all as a common force . As long as we respect and honour it's roots and gifts it'll always keep fresh . davor obradovic Although African-Americans are narrowly credited with the formation of hip-hop, Latinos have been involved in the scene since its conception. According to Raquel Z. Rivera, “The social conditions and economic prospects for young people living in poor urban communities during the 1960s and 1970s were appalling (4). She goes on to state that both African Americans and Latinos, particularly Puerto Ricans, called these poor communities their homes. One of the worst areas to live in at this time was the Bronx, which was riddled with poor housing, fierce gang rivalries, and drug use. According to Cheryl L. Keyes, Afrika Bombaataa, a former African American gang member himself and deemed the “Godfather of Hip-Hop” asserted his concept of youth solidarity by rechanneling violent gang rivalries into artistic competitions. In 1973, Bombaataa formed a nonviolent coalition called the Youth Organization, later renamed the Zulu Nation. This organization was essentially a youth organization incorporating break-dancers (mainly Latinos), DJ’s, and graffiti artists (5). One of the first Latino famed Latino hip-hop artists during the formative years of this organization was DJ Charlie Chase of the Cold Crush Brothers. According to Chase, he influenced the hip-hop scene by slipping in musical elements from Latin music just enough so that people would inadvertently enjoy them without realizing they were actually dancing to Latin music (6). According to DJ Ill Will, “Back then race was never really a problem between Blacks and Spanish” (7).

Jamar never said "Rap" wasn't for all races nor did he say they couldn't participate. He said that blacks were the "Originators" so that make every other race "Guest" you can't argue that. Just accept. Regardless of how much we call ourselves Americans, it's a reason why we call Native Americans "Native" this was their land. You can't argue history. And know this MTV wasn't trying to deal with hip hop when it first came out, BET did. Whites saw that they could make money off of it and since then it's been mainstream. Save that all around the world stuff.

@deannayoung1612
@deannayoung1612 7 жыл бұрын
Rochelle Moneak no argument at all. I was asking why should it matter?? so many people talk about things that are insignificant. it doesn't matter where, when, why, how or how. it only matters if we as a human race can make our lives happy & fulfilled. I don't see the point in discussing origins or originals. bc regardless of where it came from, its where it is going. the past is the past!! we should focus on today. thats all we can do. just bc sumn began a certain way, doesn't make it an owned property. thats the only thing I was saying about hip hop or any other music/art. bc if a white person or a Spanish person or whomever invented something, that doesn't mean it belongs only to the people with the same color skin!! does that make sense to u? I was only asking why it should matter?? black, white, or green!! as long as people want to keep separation bc of skin pigmentation, there will always be racist issues that are pushed. Stop putting humans n2 a separate category. we are all living on the same planet last I knew. I'm certainly not making a dime off of any1! so the comments about white people using black people or "product" of black people to make $, is racist! if I said sumn like that, woah, the whole of KZbin would b on my "racist" ass! but it's not right either way. White people live in ghettos and struggle just like black folks do it's not about black and white it's about GREEN in today's time. That's that man's view and his only u don't have to listen to it if u don't want to scroll or click off. I'll leave it with this if it wasn't for white people hip hop would've died from the start couldn't brought in enough revenue to keep going with just 13% of the population. The small % of targeted audience would cause the profit margin to be to low to maintain any type of business, paying the artist, production team and all the other overhead expenses.

Aerosmith and RUN DMC made hip hop/Rock history with Walk this Way and so did Anthrax and Public Enemy with Rap and Metal... House of Pain were basically the Irish Beastie Boys at one point before Everlast went solo and Lethal joined Limp Bizkit. 3rd Bass always showed prowess in Pete as well and Serch introduced Nas to the Hip Hop world.
