I would love to know a lot more about Donald Boyce. For a non-musician he was a charismatic performer. I know he was on K&TG’s road crew. That’s all I can find.

@@rontaylor5006 yeah I get it. Mine too. It was an obvious commercial attempt and I am glad that they found renewed success and maybe some better money, but once I got through ladies night and celebration I didn't follow much. Can't beat early Kool

On this day in 1975 {May 31st} "Spirit of the Boogie" reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Billboard's R&B chart... On month earlier on April 5th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #35 and spent 17 weeks in the Top 100... Sadly; original guitarist Claydes Charles Smith passes away on June 20th, 2006 at the young age of 57... R.I.P. Mr. Smith...

Responding to Kool and the Gang's Spirit of the Boogie in 75'. I am the self proclaimed original Kool and the Gang fan. I knew everthing about them from 1969-1986. basically followed them through most of their career.

I've always wondered something about the Gang. they always talk about the original 7 members, Ronald and Robert Bell,Dennis,Spike,Charles,George and Ricky.Look at thier 1st lp their is 8 people on the cover. I found out this other member is Woody Sparrow. If you go to wikipedia they also talk about the original 7 members. I wonder why they leave him out. Listen to Let the Music Take Your Mind you hear someone say Hey Woody, and he responds, yeah I hear you baby. He and Charles played guitar.
@johnhenningfield4360 Жыл бұрын
"Woody Sparrow would be the first loss that K&TG experience apparently he was sick with a illness and I think he recorded half of the first K&TG album with the band but he died a year and half or two years later because of his illness, I don't think they wrote him out of their history but it was a short stay for him, I hope this helps 👍"

This clip shows how much of a fun stage presence the band always had. My favorite band in my highschool years. They eventually brought in JT Taylor to be their front man because none of them were "singers". They became more of a pop crossover band and sold more records, and many fans mistook JT as Kool, but loyal fans know that bass player, Robert "Kool" Bell, is the Kool of Kool & the Gang.

I'm the original Kool and the fan since their debut in 1969 with the instrumental track entitled Kool and the Gang. I saw them at their 2015 Hollywood walk of fame ceremony and saw Robert Kool Bell get out of a limo and said to him Robert Earl "Kool" Bell (Muhammad Bayyan) 1969, your 1st single Kool and the Gang and he looked at me like he was surprised. I basically said the same to Ronald Bell (Khalis Bayyan) Dennis Thomas (D.T.) and Funky George Brown. Last remaining of the original 8 piece band members. Woody Sparrow who was only on their 1st Lp died in 1969 was never included as the 8th member, they only talk about the original 7 which included Robert "Spike Mickens", Richard Allen Westfield (Rick West) and Claydes (Charles) Smith

Where is Spike Mickens? "Was he under the weather" for this particular performance? Good to see Donald Boyce as lead vocalist. This, in fact, was around 1975/6. James "JT" Taylor was still three years away from joing the band as their greatest vocalist. Also Eumir Deodato had yet to start producing the band's greatest hits. Thanks for posting!!

@TheOnionRingPimp That's crazy, I've just posted a comment about Woody Sparrow on the last kool video I've watched! Reading the liner notes of my 90's CD release of the first album, I also understand that he participated in no other album. He seemed to have serious health problems.
@johnhenningfield4360 Жыл бұрын
Correct he was very sick and I think he contributed to half of the first album, I don't think he got through the whole album. He wasn't written out of their history, it would be their first tragedy losing a band member and I also think in their minds they stayed together for all these years for that reason, it could've been a pact they made as kids and just weathered life as childhood friends and family.
@JayMumfordMusic12 жыл бұрын
@oliverecords Wow, the CD re-issue of the first LP is probably rarer than the original vinyl (which is very rare). Never got to see the liner notes to it. Woody is listed on the back cover of the first LP and in "Let the Music Take Your Mind," but that's it.
