Building a Simple Staircase for the Garage Loft

Today we build some stairs up to the loft and finish them off with some paint to match the rest of the setup. This was my first time building stairs and I think they came out pretty nice, let me know what you think!

That turned out so great, 2 toned & everything. (super fancy) I like how you designed it in CAD first, a couple of weeks ago, my twin brother & I rebuilt my sister's front steps & we didn't do that & we had to go back to the hardware store a couple of times to get more supplies so we could finish it!

Kordare also closing up the inside portion of the stairs between the ramp and stringer is probably a good call! Prevent some nasty hang ups and ankle catchers. Looks so sick though!

They look great. Good choice on leaving the risers off. When you use any structural steel brackets, like those hangers, you need to be putting a nail or structural screw in every single hole. May feel excessive, but it's important. It looks like there were a few open on the stringer supports.

Yeah there were a few open on just the underside because I didn't like how close they were to the edge of the board, most likely would have caused a split. Although there were more side attachment points which I didn't show.

Should build a narrow quarter that you could store under the stairs and then pull out to use as a hip launch into your roller section. A hip would be a cool replacement for that kicker.

It's an excellent job, especially for the purpose. One comment, however - if you're going to use construction glue (unless you're just doing it to keep things from wiggling), you should remove the primer from the surface you're bonding. (The grey boards). Even just taking a sanding block and roughing up the surface will greatly increase the bond strength.

Came out awesome man, love seeing the updates. You should maybe throw some anti slip (or griptape) material on the stairs. Paint could make it slick when wet. Case your feet are wet from rain/snow or even got oil or something on your shoes. Just a tip.

Thanks for the idea! This paint is actually pretty grippy since I got satin finish and put it on with rough rollers.

And paint the faces and the outline (about 1" or so) of the stairs in the dark color as well so you can see where they end/start...

Great build. I think I would have just went over to the left wall of the garage and put a cantilevered landing over there and put the stairs going up over there. I'd be afraid of getting squirrely on the ramp and running up on or taking a header into the steps.

When you were drilling into the concrete did you use a hammer drill? Sounded like a regular drill. Best setup for a house and garage- that is until you get married and she wants to live in a neighborhood. Another great video!

Well it looks great but one of the major problems with building a staircase is how you determine what angle to screw in the treads so they are level. Could you add that explanation somehow?

Hope those stairs don't break on ya. My house had a staircase built that way and I feel through them because the nails sheered off and the block fell off the side. I would never build stairs that way, cut the stringers so the steps are supported on top of them.

How do you figure out the correct angle to cut the stringer to be flush with the floor and header?

I have a question about your stairs, great construction, but I noticed that you did not use a level? Are they level?

They are level. I based everything off of the angles I used, it helped that I had them laid out in CAD so I could easily make sure everything would work out to be level.

I'm guessing your loft is 8 foot off the ground? So how long of a board did you use for your stringers? I am building stais for my hunting blind. It is 8 foot off the ground also.

Loft is 89" off the floor and stringers are 135"

If it was my ramp I'd consider cutting out a 3/4" plywood panel insert to fill the crescent-moon shaped void between the edge of the ramp and the bottom of the adjacent stair stringer. I could totally see someone falling on the ramp and jamming a limb or their head in between the stringer and the ramp. Yikes! Be safe, and great work.

I know that this comment will get swallowed up in the comment section and you probably won't read it. However if you do just know I'm not trying to be negative. When you added the construction adhesive you really should have removed the paint. The glue will bond to the new wood but will not make its way into the fibers of the mezzanine wood. It will still make a stronger bond than if you didn't use it and will actually prevent squeaks. The bolts were probably more than enough, but moving forward i would try and remember this. Like I said I'm really not being negative just a fellow shop builder trying to give lend a tip or two your way. Keep up the good work. The shop is really looking amazing by the way!!!

Nails are ten times cheaper compared to the structural screws, so I use them wherever possible. Decking screws shouldn't be used in these applications because they aren't rated for shear force. The only place I used the decking/construction screws was to screw down the flooring OSB.

Noooo you're asking that joist hanger to do a job it wasn't designed for. It's not a cantilever bracket. The nail fixings shown at 8:35 aren't designed to hold a lateral load pulling in line with the timber grain. Especially only an inch in from the edge. Your test at 8:45 is levering a lateral load on the top of the hanger, where it's designed for a vertical load. That new outside stringer would have been better longer and going at an angle to fix directly to your existing stringer/bearer. Love your channel but I have OCD about construction design.

Hahaha yeah I realize that's not what they are designed for but once I added the 45 degree piece this thing is super solid. It is only a 6 inch overhang, it's not perfect but I'm okay with that.

Kordare Yeah indeed. A nailed strap on the top of that joist going under the floor sheet & wrapped over the bearer would do it. As you say it’s not going anywhere but it may flex. Just keep mother-in-laws off there.

Looks good, but not going to pass any inspection. Stringers should always be 2x12,s so enough wood is left between the birds mouths and the edge of the stringer . (5 inches at 90 degrees) and your tread width of 9.25” is not wide enough for current stair standards. The stringer length cannot be more than 6 feet unsupported either. Granted that is an easy fix here. Not a big deal now, as it is your house so do as you wish, but may be an issue if you ever sell.

Haha sorry probably because I just used CAD to figure it out. Just modeled everything to make sure it would work. There are also a million stair calculators online you can use.
