Hey everyone! I think there’s some confusion regarding what year this film was shot. This was filmed by Burton Holmes, an American traveler who coined the term ‘travelogue’. The footage seen here is a mixture of 1901 footage and 1913 footage: Holmes visited the Korean peninsula twice. The footage of the dancers from 3:33 were in 1901, as stated in Holmes’ timeline of Seoul. All other footage was a mixture of 1901/1913. Hope this helps!

@LeonardoRflp Жыл бұрын
Whatever. Are you too sensitive? Let it go. People have their opinions. And saying that people were more happy back then can be supported by the incredibly high rates of mental issues we have in society nowadays, serial killers, psycos... the trend of higher mental issues rates is something that tells a lot about how society is doing. Free market and enterpreneurs bring in innovation, we have better technology, but culture? Good luck trying to say scientifically that one is better than the other when you exclude technology and economy from the comparison.

Are you sure this video is from 1900? 0:15 I see Jintan (仁丹) ad on a pole (and many other poles as well). Jintan is Japanese medicinal candy that went on sale 1905. It's chronologically impoosible that this video predates it. On the upper portion of the same pole, it appears to show Japanese constipation medicine Seika Junchougan (精華潤腸丸), while I could not decipher completely. Japanese ads seem too rampant for 1900. More likely, it's a footage at least after 1910? Checking with the official list of the Burton Holmes company lecture and show titles, my guess is that the video is from 1913 or 1914.
@lorenwyman25 күн бұрын
According to the Korean Film Archive, although Holmes took visual recordings during both of his visits in 1901 and 1913 (some sources say 1912), it's not clear whether the video is from this later batch alone, or if it's a mix of both collections.

@Babushkiable The travel film archive places this video in the 1900's decade, meaning 1900-1909, which places it still before official annexation in 1910. As far as I'm aware, major Japanese-led infrastructure projects and resource exploitation of the country didn't start until after the official annexation in 1910. This doesn't mean that the Korean Empire wasn't strong-armed by Japanese diplomats into hiring Japanese contractors to complete smaller infrastructure projects between the Treaty of 1905 that made Korea a dependent protectorate and official annexation in 1910. There is also a possibility that some telegraph and telephone lines were installed by the Japanese Imperial military in strategic locations throughout Korea to aid them in long-distance communications in the Russo-Japanese war between 1904-1905.

Oh, everyone. Don't distort Korean history. Japan's victory in the Sino-Japanese War of 1895 only means to remove the Qing influence from Korea. Japan still has to worry about the influence of the U.S. and Russia. Japan eliminated American influence with the Taft-Katsura agreement in 1905. A few months later, they also eliminated Russian influence with a victory in the Russo-Japanese War. This is the process by which Japan made Korea a protectorate, and Korea was not yet their protectorate. Japan finally made Korea a protectorate with compulsory Korea-Japan treaty on Nov. 5, 1905. Then, five years later, in 1910, Korea became a Japanese colony.

However, Korea's introduction of electricity facilities has nothing to do with Japan. Korea's electricity facilities were completed in 1886, and Asia's first electricity generation in 1887 to light up electric lights. This was promoted by King Gojong of Korea. It was done through direct exchanges with the U.S. And this was before the Sino-Japanese War even began. At that time, there were no electric facilities in Japan yet. Honguen What? It was the age of imperialism. Japan’s rule was not illegal at all. You shouldn’t identify Japan with western countries. They tried to exploit people in poor countries. Japan was not like those countries. You shouldn’t identify Japan with those countries, much less Germany.
Koreans those days usually had only two big meals, once in the morning and evening. Typical meal is big big bowl of rice, some kimchi and other fermented vegetables.

It says the source of the video was Burton Holmes; the video was taken in Korea in 1900. The Japanese occupation of Korea was irrelevant for Korea's modernization in terms of bringing the same result. Korean was already working on modernization including installing water system, lights, phone, rail roads & trains, electricity, Western medical science, Western style school even before Japanese occupation. (Also Korea was sending students overseas including someone who graduated American medical school before the Japanese occupation.) Japanese investment or occupation does not matter in terms of bringing the same results. Japan didn't modernize Korea. It was the era that modernized Korea. Korea would have finished modernizing itself even without Japanese occupation. (Korean modernization was started before Japanese occupation.) Korea had the will for modernization and Korea was taking a modernization method step by step to be modernized. Slaves were freed before 1900. contents.history.go.kr/front/hm/view.do?treeId=010603&tabId=03&levelId=hm_107_0090 "1801년 공노비의 대부분을 이루고 있는 내노비와 시노비에 대한 해방이 이루어졌다.

0:15 There is an advertisement poster of 仁丹 - JINTAN - and the trademark Guy. The japanease company - JINTAN - was founded in 1905. It is the reason why some peaple point that this movie is at least after 1905. But actually the JINTAN's poster was designed around 1900. I can't be sure this movie is in 1900 or much later. It seems affected by japan in some Ad though.. Anyway, this movie is beautiful and valuable!

This video is also evidence that Koreans are also in the habit of trumped hoax. Through the cooperation of the Japan power, but advertising of Japan companies exist in the power pillar. The drug company, named Morishita Jintan, developed and disseminated the drug in Japan in 1905, and then advertised on the Korean peninsula five years later. The part of the image of the Japanese to behave in a friendly together, deliberately deleted, feel the malice of the editor. The truth about it, why is it trouble for Koreans?
