Flip phones are still really popular here in Korea with the older generations. The old people who have smartphones either have the Samsung foldables or they buy wallet cases for their regular smartphones. They seem obsessed with flipping something open to use a phone

IMHO the form factor is not enough to determine if a phone is dumb or smart. To brigde the gap between dumb and smartphone there should be any ability to download all the apps you want, but having preinstalled a certain amount of necessary apps from the smart side of the world: for example messaging apps (WhatsApp, telegram), maps, camera, phone app (for calls). That's it. You download social apps on this, and your life is ruined the same way smartphone do, so at least ruin your life in 4k.

Hmmm I feel like installing social apps could create similar addictions but I’d argue it’s much less of a problem if it were to be on a phone in this form factor. It can still be addicting but it’s less stimulating than a normal smartphone which makes the habit easier to control I feel like

@Isaac-OS the only thing this form factor may actually help you detach from social addiction is the "shame" of showing it in front of people (obviously I am kidding) or the fact that it is not a performing phone (you get annoyed for lags, or screen quality when consuming media). Other than that it is pretty much the same thing as a very entry level phone, same addiction.

I'll say, the T9 already makes it 80% less addicting. I've used a T9 app on my smartphone for almost a month and was barely using it, I only typed when necessary and my battery even went for 2 day without charging! The form factor may not be a dumbphone indicator, but the keyboard certainly is! The T9 is the n°1 reason I want a kyocera, and n°2 is that it looks cute lmao. But look at me now, typing 3 PARAGRAPHS to a youtube comment. Why? because I clicked the button to turn off the app. Giving us a easy way out is like giving 500 cigarretes to someone addicted to nicotine but then putting it in a box and telling them not to smoke them all at once! It may work for some minutes, but theu WILL open the box and smoke thise 500 cigarretes

@@Gustoberg I grew up using T9 keyboards, but who is not used to, as you admit, makes harder to use one of the useful features we have in smartphones: communication. But you can doom scroll whatever social like X or Instagram (even easier using arrows). So, for me it's not a dumb phone , it's a smartphone, and the form factor doesn't matter. It's all about the installed apps, and the ability to download whatever you want on it.

I dunno if you're aware of it, but there is also a Japanese "Mode1 Retro II" flip semi-dumb phone. It has 4gb ram, 64gb storage, 50mp dual camera, and a way more premium feel than this phone:)

Premium feel? it feels cheaply built and is all plastic as well. Also, many of them have issues with the keyboard after 6 months :( I bought one in 2023 and was really disappointed about that.

It's great to see another phone like the Samsung Folder! I've been using a transition device for the past couple years- the duoqin f21 pro, it uses android 11 and has a candybar form with a tiny touch screen. It really blows people away to see it and what it can do. I wish there were more odd phones with personality and limited modern functionality that worked on American bands.

I can think of different groups of people who may want to have access to the functionality of a smartphone when the physical build of a dumb phone. Not everyone has the ability to use touchscreens with ease, and having actual original buttons may be better (people with Reynaud syndrome or hyperhidrosis come to mind). These phones are also cheaper than most smartphones, so if you want to only use a couple of apps but don't want/need to be caught in the latest developments, these are a good option as well.

I've used an actual non-android keitai from Sharp (SH-03D) for quite some time. Wish it had capabilities of this one and a better camera. Unfortunately after many years the battery expanded and there were no replacements. I miss that kind of technology, it was super cool - it opened with a button and the screen could rotate and there was an animated maid sheep greeting me from the screen.

I've been using the CAT S22 Flip phone which also runs Android go. It's getting kinda slow but it's still very usable in America at at least with Mint Mobile. I have been looking for an upgrade but the Mive doesn't seem to work well in America. There's also the Qin F21 and F22 Pro but those also seem to have some problems in America as well. I really want something like those android Japanese flip phones or maybe something like a modern blackberry classic. Unihertz has something close but they seem very bulky.

Android flip phones are the perfect intermediary device between a dumbphone and a smartphone. Cause the form factor lends itself to discourage doom scrolling, but you can access things like QR codes, mobile payments, maps, ride sharing or food delivery apps when needed.

Which one is best dumb phone, just want it to be upto date but confused with whether to go with an e-ink or a flip phone -Bigme Hisense or pro (release 13th jan i guess) -minimal phone (world wide release between jan to march) These are the ones that i know of actually, interested in these e-ink as its good for eyes but the phone price is holding me back. Need something that will get most of the things done like, texting, calls, online banking, whatsApp, reading and KZbin.

If you think KaiOS is bad, try using S30+, you don't even GET applications aside from the most very basic. No maps, no email, no web browser (that works), and certainly nothing external- S30+ doesn't have an app store! Did I mention S30+ devices can't connect to Wi-Fi or create a hotspot? How about a 200 SMS storage limit, and 2MB for MMS? I've been using dumbphones full-time since 2020 (I only had a smartphone for 6 years before that) and trust me, it gets SO much worse than KaiOS. We really do make do with scraps in the dumbphone world lol.

I love my s30+ on my AGM M9 phone, who needs all that extra junk anyway. I love when I connect it to my computer it has a whopping 32mb of storage space, holds dozens of photos before I have to transfer them to my laptop or I can put 6 songs onto my phone and not take pictures perfect for me

@ I am pretty harsh on it, but I'm genuinely glad it's good for some people. I just the market wasn't saturated with S30+ devices, I don't want to use Android, I just need the same features I was getting in Symbian phones in the late 00s. I would be happy with S30+ if I could have email, hotspot support, and more storage for SMS and MMS. I've sent feedback to Nokia/HMD but can't imagine it would have made any difference to them.

I'd like a flipphone with special buttons for controlling the music player while it's closed, like Nokia XpressMusics and Sony Ericsson Walkmans did, and a basic screen on the upper shell to display basic information, like the Sony Ericsson w380i. Basically a modern and better quality SE w380i. Also, don't use Android Go on a regular smartphone. It's awful.

KaiOS is a MESS right now. I experienced it, and it was HORRIBLE. KaiOS 3.0 is far, far inferior to KaiOS 2.0 (hell they removed Whatsapp support). For a true dumbphone experience, a Lightphone would be better. As for KaiOS, Android Go basically killed it. The fact that it runs with only a few hiccups with only 2GB RAM is pretty okay, even if it's running Android 12 (which is basically 3 years by now). I don't see it replacing my Galaxy S22+, but as a secondary phone, I would want it. My wish? At least give it a 3000 mAH Battery (this is still Android), and at least 3 GB RAM. That'll make it far more palpable, while still giving it a semi-dumbphone vibe.

The one thing that keeps me from trying to go back to dumbphones is that most of them are keypad style. I never want to type on a keypad in my life ever again. My first few phones were keypads but i switched to a qwerty as soon as my flip phone died in 2008-9ish. And i stuck with that formfactor until 2013 when i got my first smartphone. And smartphones still use qwerty. I'm just way to used to it to ever go back.

I am actually tired of all this nonsense about flip phones as a way to stop getting distracted. I don't want to reduce my screen time. I want more screen time. I don't even want to save money. I want to be able to watch videos and play modern games on my phone and I want to use all of the non-nazi social medias and be able to install all apps. Give me a large screen, and make it AMOLED, give me full Android. BUT GIVE ME A KEYBOARD. Give me physical buttons. Heck, give me a stylus as well. I am sick and tired of touch controls. I am better at typing text on my NINTENDO SWITCH using a dpad than I'll ever be in one 'smart' phone using those shitty touch keyboards. Never again, honestly. Actually, just release a Retroid Pocket 5 with a SimCard slot.

I've had a cat s22 and the keyboard is simply awful to use, specially if you need to text people from work all day. So you end up with a touch screen that's smart just like your iphone and half a brick (the keypad) that you never use. The form factor ends up being annoying. The best thing to do is just deleting all apps that distract you and dumb down your current phone. The best dumb phone is the one you already have. It's a mind set. Stop purchasing stuff thinking something that's inside you will change.

So let me understand this: if you lose your phone you cannot move around because you need the map app? Or you need your bank app all the time? Or you need to use QR all the time? I live in the most advanced place on earth in terms of technology, and I reach out for my phone so rarely for anything, that just hearing this makes me question if the problem is not much the "need for the technology" but more of a consisten inability of most people to function without a device for whatever reason it may be. If even I need to access my bank account or what not, I use my laptop; which is also somehting I do very rarely; and you don't need a "dumb phone" to be in control of your life... You need to push that button to silence notifications and understand that you are the one that can turn off and on an app, so the problem at that point is not the phone but the person that can't control themselves? You can't go in the speed limits so you put a lock on the accelerator or a limitator on your car? Can't eat food so you buy a safe and put the food in there that open only every 12 hours? I don't get the logic of buying something that limit a person when the person could simply use the device more responsibly.

In between a "smartphone" and a "dumbphone"? A "wisephone"? Features I want from a "wisephone": 1. Maps 2. Messaging Apps (WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Signal) 3. Banking Apps 4. Audio Apps (podcasts, Spotify, MP3 player) Problem is once you have a phone that can do those things it can do pretty much everything else that causes distractions, and artificially limiting access to things like KZbin or Instagram or Clash of Clans seems silly. The ideal might be a bespoke app suite that boils everything down and consolidates things into a simpler app. For example, with messaging, you could have a single app that pulls conversations from WhatsApp, FB, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat into one uniform interface.

I feel like people can have modern smartphones they just got to learn how to have self-control when it comes to social media or what they're consuming online it's pretty easy to be quite honest have some self restriction and you'll be able to have a normal phone and not downgrade to a dumb phone which I'm not saying is a bad thing but for those who struggle with social media and all that s*** it's better to have self control and have better habits than downgrading to a device that has little next to nothing but that's just my opinion

i think self control is the goal but some people can't just drop bad habits cold turkey unfortunately, but i agree it's not an end goal solution but rather a transition to help others!
