Kwanghee basically built his variety show persona around 'that guy who is honest about plastic surgery'. it worked for him, his group wasn't super successful but he's doing well now. most idols hide their plastic surgery because their agencies told them so, sometimes the agency was the one who persuaded them to get things done. idols are young, you have 16 year olds getting nose jobs 😬. Shinhwa was one of the first big groups and one of the members openly talked about his botched nose job being a gift from the ceo 😭

Not only Kwanghee but most members of Ze:a are now famous actors, hosts etc, because back in day agencies will let idols promote themselves on TV shows as much as they can and branch out when they feel like they are ready. Basically they had more freedom to both speak their mind and chose their own path more feely than they do now. I remember 2nd Gen idols were way more open about their surgeries. Now idols are very much discouraged from speaking on the topic to maintain this illusion of the perfect image, almost "naturally" and "without trying", companies are clearly selling illusion to young and impressionable fans

@@dessssssss that's not exactly true. zea had 9 members, only 4 of them are still relevant. they weren't doing well, and their agency was infamous for mistreating nine muses members - it was caught on camera by documentary crew. they had to land gigs by themselves. 2nd gen idols weren't more open, it's just back then there were more variety shows based on talking like strong heart. these days rookie idols, especially from smaller companies, don't seem to promote on tv shows as much, the market has changed. media training is a thing too

@@migoreng7789 A lot of that is social medias influence on kpop. It’s more beneficial for groups to promote on social media than Koreans tv shows to attract more international fans. 2nd Gen idols had to prioritize Korea & Japan’s market. Could you imagine your results. Dr like this are the Reason most of these folks he complained about GOT THE RESULTS THEY LIVE WITH It's like asking someone who can't see beauty in everything to photograph you and then taking that photograph regardless of how turns out especially if you're not happy with it and putting it on your framing it and putting it on your wall anyway fuck that. When he was talking about how he still felt inferior because others were born with their good looks, it reminded me of the Korean drama My ID is Gangnam Beauty. The main character was made fun of for being "ugly" then she got a lot of plastic surgery and she still didn't feel beautiful and felt inferior to "natural beauties". And people still gossiped about her and put her down for having plastic surgery, so you just can't win.

I taught English to many, many Korean students and they were very open about their plastic surgery. Once someone from elsewhere asked “are the parents ok with it?” And all the students from Korea laughed. They said their parents were the ones recommended it and it was a common graduation present 😭 Edit: this post got more attention than I thought. I wanted to share more context. It is not strictly for vanity that plastic surgery is so common in Korea. Getting the best employment position possible after graduation is super important in this culture, and sets the conditions for what is considered a good life. Well, it’s no secret that good looks give you a leg up. That is pretty much universal. Also, please don’t get me wrong, I ❤️ the Korean people 🇰🇷They are beautiful with or without the plastic surgery, hilarious, charming, smart, incredibly ambitious, and make the best food 🥹

I sometimes look at some Korean celebrities (both male and female) and I cannot help but think that so many of them don't look as beautiful as they used to, despite the fact that they undergo those procedures to fit the beauty standards more. Especially extreme jaw reduction or jaw fillers to achieve the v-line jaw, as mentioned in the video. Sometimes it looks too exaggerated to the point that other facial features seem too big giving them almost an alien look - Taeyeon, Sunmi or Chungha are the examples that come to my mind. And it's so scary that this trend thrives among younger idols, some of the members from the groups like NCT or aespa don't look like themselves anymore. And to think that those are people barely in their 20s. The industry pressure is insane.

Be it is a shame it is common when within such a industry where they are scouted out at the youthful age of say even 15 as a trainee before being put out into the public. They are "suggested" what operations to get to " further enhance" their features. It becomes even more bothersome for idols may feel ashamed for admitting such so instead would insist that they never went under the knife which could give very skewed conclusions and body image issues.

i think a video about the history of v line surgery would be cool. as far as i know the procedure was invented as a facial feminization surgery as this one San Francisco clinic had lot of trans patients that looked for a way to ease their dysphoria. But the most striking face is NOT average, and so far the most striking faces, aka supermodels, aren't in Asia but rather mainly in the West. Maybe it's just that plastic surgery in Asia has become too industrialized that everyone looks the same. Aside from being open and honest, Kwanghee is also humble. It can't be denied that he did become better-looking with the plastic surgery but he isn't arrogant nor does he put others down even when he's become a handsome idol. I've met some former schoolmates who have become minor influencers and very clearly had plastic surgery done, but aside from denying it, they are now even quick to criticize other people's looks and insecurities as if they weren't average-looking before. I personally don't really care if anyone's had cosmetic enhancements or not, it's only off-putting when they deny it and they start to feel and act superior claiming they're "naturally" divine-looking and treating everyone else as inferior who must envy, validate, and worship them.

The thing about the ideal aesthetic in Korea is the it has very little wiggle room. They end up looking like they got a procedure that sticks your face into a mold and everybody comes out the same. I mean, even skin color is heavily scrutinized. Anything darker that pale just isn’t ideal. The pressure they feel to be beautiful must be intense. It's pretty common in Japan too. I remember while I was traveling in Sendai (before the tsunami), there were plastic surgery clinics everywhere. Plastic surgery is so common now that I see teenage girls around me get lip fillers and rhinoplasties. In 10th or 11th grade. Literal highschoolers. I heard one girl in my highschool say that she made her parents program a rhinoplasty for her saying that it's for her health. I guess some rich parents really do anything their children ask ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I love what you said at the end. I'm extremely insecure about my looks. I usually avoid looking in the mirror, cause I don't want to spend too much time finding every imperfection... but besides that if people say something about my appearance it's always that I'm beautiful/pretty in a unique way... which I don't see, but okay. And hearing that last sentence of yours, somehow boosted my self confidence and at least for now I don't feel inferior to all those perfectly sculptured faces that are printed all over social media.

As a korean who studied and lived abroad for over a decade, the motherland scares me. KwangHee, however, is very open and aware of his plastic surgery records and what not tho. People here get plastic surgery and other procedures. Fyi, the ozembic (idk if i got the spellings right) or whatever diabetes shots have been around for yrs here. The beauty standard here is insane. After coming back from the states and living here for the past decade, I've been influenced and have been way skinnier. I was never obese or even overweight like ever in my life🤷🏻‍♀️ send help

I never realized how much work Park Min Young got until I saw her smile side by side in this video. I knew her since 2007 from her drama I Am Sam, and knew she had done plastic surgery, but didn't think she'd do more continous cosmetic post fame. But wow, you can see how in her younger days, her smile would produce some crows feet, and her buccal fat would be more noticeable. Now, all that is gone, and almost makes her look more ethereal but not real.

i recently had gotten more into kpop and it definitely makes sense why it's so common over there. it was interesting to learn that there's a title for who has the "best/most Korean standard beauty" in each group, and a friend of mine was just telling me about the double eyelid procedure which is an apparent "must-have" for anyone in the industry. they seem to have image management down to an art over there.

Kwang hee is one of the nicest guys in Korean entertainment industry. He is really honest, openminded, friendly person, a devout Christian who is brave enough to talk about his faith on national broadcast television. His group, Zea (Children of Empire) was not very successful in the beginning and Kwang hee was the only person who had gained fame through reveling the fact that he had several plastic surgery when he got invited on a popular Korean game show. He later said that he openly talked about it because he wanted to be re-invited for extra income no matter what and support his group members. It was only after Kwanghee sacrificed his self image that his group started to get recognitions, and let me tell you what, Kwanghee is one of the most beloved entertainment personalities in S. Korea not because of his looks but for his honesty, loyalty, kind and funny personality.

A little tweak to enhance your look perhaps. Or, when you are 50, and a woman needs a face lift. A little botox or small amount of filler when you are female over 40.....moderation!

I worked and lived in Korea for a number of years. I was living there at the time the cosmetic surgery industry was just starting to become very popular for the average person. I found Korean faces beautiful, and it saddened me to see the need to take away the very unique features that I found so interesting and unique to Koreans. The men seem to feminize their faces and the women seem to want to look more Caucasian. Overall, I found it so sad to see them taking away what made them special looking.

maybe sometimes there are some psychological or mental status you can talk about in this feild. I sometimes feel some celebrities reach a very good status with plastic surgery and later their faces just keep getting weird with extra works. I'm also wondering if that's a technical problem of maintenance or a mental status of never getting enough and never feeling enough

Body Dismorphic Disorder is a nightmare for a lot of people who don't realise it's a real disorder. I've got a friend who is a beautiful woman and always has been, but unfortunately she hates her body and her face, she's never been unpopular with the opposite sex and I've always thought that what she sees when she looks in the mirror isn't what anyone else sees when they look at her. She mentioned Botox a while ago for wrinkles on her face, I said you don't have any wrinkles on your face, and anyway Botox wasn't developed for that reason it's for people like my cousin who was born with Cerebral palsy to help with the disabilities and it works great but not forever and more is needed once your own body does what it's naturally going to and remove the Botox. You get Botox for the wrinkles you don't have and you'll be amazed at first ignoring the fact that your face is exactly the same, then your imaginary wrinkles will return and you'll get more Botox. And that's an unnecessary expense for something you don't need. Still if Botox is being used in an inappropriate way then people will keep on getting it. It's a sad situation but it's difficult to convince some that they're not seeing themselves the way others see them.

When I see J-Drama, C-drama, and K-drama, the actors/actresses are all starting to look the same and I can't tell the difference between them their nationality anymore. With plastic surgery being the go-to for most of the actors now, they are changing not only their looks, but some of the characteristics that would differentiate the Asian countries.

I don’t understand how some fans can be so naive . Example , IU. They insist that she’s all natural and that she’s just matured but you can see that she has had some tweaks here and there though she has not gone overboard like many others . Her eyelids while she had always had double eyelids , were never crisp and defined when she was a child . So I know she has had them tweaked to look more aesthetically pleasing . I have nothing against surgery itself but it annoys me when fans are so blind and go on the defensive when you point out the obvious to their insistence that their idol is “all natural .”
