For an aircraft that has gained a fairly positive reputation among its operators, there’s a bit of bad press out there threatening its reputation! Following news that EgyptAir is phasing out its Airbus A220 fleet, we are now learning that Korean Air is debating whether to phase out the type as well. The cause of this move would be its merger with Asiana Airlines, which may require a much simpler fleet. While the merger still has to be approved by relevant regulatory authorities, let’s look at the situation for today’s video!

Those planes will get snapped up on the resale market, too many A220-flying airlines who want to increase lift or accelerate phaseout of older, less efficient aircraft with higher fuel costs.

KA would be better off selling their 737's. Asiana doesn't have those but they do have A320's, which KA also operates.

The 737 is the backbone of their. They have more those than A321 and A220 combined. So it makes sense to just retire the A220. The A220 is also their only aircraft that's not designed by Boeing or Airbus so it requires different training and maintanance.

that is my question too... just wondering what happened since they already dominate korean sky, even have "shadowing" schedule (imagine KE & OZ A380s take off simultaneously from LAX) 🤔

After the pandemic, Asiana fell into capital erosion and is now surviving thanks to the merger. If the merger fails, Asiana will soon go bankrupt.

If Korean Air Lines merged together with Asiana Airlines this means by definition that Korean Air will leave the SkyTeam Alliance despite being one of the founders of SkyTeam along with Air France, Delta Airlines and AeroMexico

I read somewhere that Asiana will leave Star Alliance and join Skyteam. This to me seems like the more choice since it will be Asiana who will be absorbed into Korean Air. Think American-US Airways merger.

Or how about this? PW needs to take themselves to task on the engine issue. There is nothing that Airbus or Boeing could do about engine issues.

@@Blank00 both, you know how it goes, it takes customer pressure for manufacturers to own up, no airbus or Boeing didn't manufacture those parts therefore they shouldn't have to pick up the slack

@@johnmoloney5296 if it takes customer pressure, then the airlines should be the ones calling engine manufacturers out. Engine manufacturers get money directly from airlines, not via some middleman at Airbus or Boeing

No. Korean Air does not operate any Rolls Royce engined aircraft which means their A380s will also go.

@@aydoyt this was already confirmed. Both Korean and Asiana are retiring their A380 fleets in 2026. (KAL has 10 while Asiana has 6)

A220 remains more grounded than in air. Useless Canadian Bombardier couldn't rectify it, nor could Airbus. Fuel tank issue, PW unreliable engines only add to A220 woes.

they both have the same engines. These engines have the same problems on both aircraft. So both are equally unreliable. This is not due to the manufacturer of the device.

Which airlines A220s have you flown on? I have flown on ones from Swiss and from Baltic and found them to be excellent

@@neilpickup237 I agree. I flew with breeze airlines brand new 220 last summer, and will fly with Swiss in one later this week. Great aircraft

Worst plane? You're crazy. The A220 is selling much better and is better built. They're excellent to fly on. No need to be rude about it. Also, if you're talking about the E195 E2, it uses the same exact engine, which have the same problems.

@@avinashegala5799 What does that have to do with anything? The A220 is one of the best short haul aircraft in production. CS100/300 A220-100/300 same thing. nothing wrong with it being made in canada, sure is better then old designs like the A320 and 737 family

@@damnbobthebuilders yeah it's better then old a320 and 737 probably that's the reason airlines bought the older older aircrafts which lead to separating the program from original company in 2014 laid of workers and ultimately sold to airbus
