I applaud your insight in talking about the expressive power of Korean ballads. Many other music experts before you have explained to the public about the same question as you. "Since Koreans had been invaded by China and Japan hundreds of times over hundreds of years until just 70 years ago, it would have been imprinted on the DNA to express the sadness of leaving the things they love." We call that deep-seated emotion "Han."

This Artist Edition episode of Immortal Songs is honouring Kim Bum-Soo who is present during this performance. This is a beautifully sad song which is also an OST. I’ve not seen the story myself.Perhaps someone else might be able to enlighten us . I think these magnificent members of Forestella did an amazing job telling this story. They did not advance in the competition but I don’t care . This gem of a performance came out of it and that’s a win in my opinion!❤

Im a Korean American who grew up in Argentina. I recently found Forestella and I love LOVE your reactions. I do feel I am part Latina. And I also can tell in your reactions you understand a little more of the Korean culture than many other international reaction youtubers. Muchas gracias! I too love when Forestella sings Korean ballads. Its like fish swimming in waters for them. Thank you for exploring that world. Answering your question about why Koreans are so great in ballads. You are right: Korean history is full of tragedies, being a small peninsula surrounded by China and Japan, who historically tried to subjugate Korea. Eventually, Japan occupied Korea and murdered our Last Empress. Then, just as Japan was defeated in WW2 and Korea became independent, it was divided in half, like an amputation of our entire nation. But this made Koreans all the more resilient and proud. I am trilingual but I think the Korean language has many words that describe deep emotions and feelings which cannot be fully translated. For example the word 한 (han) is an emotion of sorrow and harrowing loss (like a hole in our hearts) that is part of our Korean identity. Like you said, Latinos are passionate too, but I think you have no shame in expressing them freely. I feel Koreans grew up in a culture where stoicism and keeping the face is valued above true feelings. Thus hidden, it becomes a breeding ground for unspoken and darker emotions. Is that why I feel when they cry, its like a volcano of emotions? The more we try to hide our feelings, the more they hurt. Btw, I believe you already reacted to them singing If I Leave, about Korean Last Empress. Can you react to them singing "After a long time" by Korean king of ballads Shim Seung Hun? kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooTNoquQlJiHj5Ysi=M7B7PtTM2qu58Jmu

we call it as "한" [Ha;n] which is not easily translated any other language. but it's very like what you said like sorrowness, suffering, pain, loss and something inside cannot be revealed. Some poetry in modern time early 20c said it like feeling deepest sad thus cannot show that sadness... not sure translation but 애이불비 in korean directly from chinese characters each of them is sadness thus not sad. sorry for messy explanation but 한 is just reflected by Korean folk song 아리랑 - Arirang

Love your reactions and would love to hear your thoughts on Phantom Singers 3 and 4 winners. Love Forestella but some of the other quartets are interesting too. Crezl, the 3rd place winner in Phantom Singers 4, is considered a true crossover. The group consists of K-pop idol singer Jo Jin-ho, Korean traditional music artist Kim Su-in, classical vocalist Lee Seung-min, and musical actor Lim Kyu-hyung. La Poem (season 3) recently won in Immortal Songs with a cover of Delilah. Libelante is the season 4 winner

There is a sentiment of "한;Han" for Koreans. Well, it can be translated into a deep flow of sadness in the heart. As Your Guy's said, Korea's modern and contemporary history has suffered a lot pain from the Japanese invasion and the Korean War(1950.6.25) caused by the conflict of ideology, so there are likely to be many songs about the sentiment of sadness. For this reason, I can't say definitely that there are a lot of sad ballad songs and they have developed, but I think they have an influence reasonably. On the other hand, there is also a sentiment about the joy of "흥;Hung" in contrast to "Han", and there are many exciting songs in the Trot genre. Forestella covered a very exciting trot song. Let me introduce it. "Dead Drunk (곤드레 만드레) ; kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5DQc36NZrSCf9k"

I lived in South America for four years. What you felt was ‘HAN’ in Korean. It is the feeling combined of sadness, loneliness, unfulfilled love, abandoned hope, longing for love or family, and the DREAM or HAPPINESS that you had to let go because of the situation you are in that includes death, separation, depression, oppression, enduring pain. Latin Americans were the victim of imperialism for 200 years and Koreans were the victims of 999 wars and invasion against Chinese & Japanese for 1,000 years. They lost their family, lover, and country by the social conditions or the foreign aggressors. The sadness that engraved in history / DNA is very similar between Koreans and Latin Americans. And also while Latin Americans lost their loved ones / love by strong Catholicism, Korean lost their love because of Confucianism. Basically, it was prohibited to love the one that you really want to because of the family, society, or the country. I think Latin Americans and Koreans share similar feeling. We are willing to sacrifice ourselves for the lover, family, society, or country. That is why you feel the ballad sound so similar between Koreans’ and Latin Americans’.

Forestella - Una historia más triste que la tristeza - estaba perdidamente enamorado solo te amaba a ti Estaba tan perdidamente enamorado Ni siquiera sabía que no estabas conmigo - Te amo, te amo, te amo Sólo te amo, te amo Ni siquiera puedo decir una sola palabra Yo me voy primero solo. - nunca volveré a amar No te amaré incluso si muero Incluso si regresas no me dejaran engañar otra vez - Preferiría irme antes de amarte.
