It's what you use to conjugate verbs in formal polite present tense form when the verb stem ends with a consonant. So for instance the verb to have, 있다. When you want to write it in formal polite present tense you replace the 다 with 습니다. Now the verb, to have, becomes 있습니다. If the verb ends with a vowel after the 다 is removed like the verb to work, 일하다, then ㅂ니다 is used to conjugate it to the formal polite present tense form. Summary, 습니다 and ㅂ니다 are used to conjugate verbs to their formal polite present tense form. The former is used when the verb stem ends with a consonant and the latter is used when the verb stem ends with a vowel. Hope I helped 🤗
