This is an abridged version of the live class from 10-7-2018 about Korean numbers. I covered Sino-Korean numbers as well as Pure Korean numbers, as well as how to use them. We also talked about many of the most commonly used counters, and which number system each one is used with.

@persephone892
@persephone892 5 жыл бұрын
Not really, cuz when telling the date in sino numbers it could be 1st, 2nd ... But still they are used as 1,2,3 in phone numbers, addresses, money and telling time in minutes and seconds. whereas the native numbers are only for counting, time in hours and age so only 1,2,3,4 and not 1st, 2nd,3rd .. Edit: after finishing this video, he said 1st 2nd 3rd even in the pure/ native numbers. So in conclusion you find both 1,2,3 and 1st,2nd,3rd in both systems.
@MiuXiu
@MiuXiu 5 жыл бұрын
No, there is a way to say 1st 2nd 3rd in korean too(첫 번째... 두 번째...). It’s just different uses.
@persephone892
@persephone892 5 жыл бұрын
@@MiuXiu 핸나 yeah that's only using the Sino system for example: 우리 둘 째는 귀엽다 (our second child is cute) however with the native numbers it's with adding :제 for example : 제 일 하교 (first school). And that (번) is often used for how many times. Example: 한번만 더주세요 (one More Time please).

I find it interesting that you mentioned using pure Korean for counting things you can touch. You can touch money, but you count it with Sino-Korean :D Is it something to do with some of your first comments about "Koreans don't count using pure Korean for things over 50"? 10 Won is < 50 but they still say "sip". A little silly, I know, but it was just something that popped into my head while listening to your comments.

Only one explanation needed to a Chinese speaker for Sino coréen numbers, exact same format but, just pronounce Chinese numbers with fat tongue , ㅎㅎㅎㅎ edit: ok maybe not exactly the same because Chinese will pronounce the zero in 103, and specify that it’s One hundred (一百零三)

I was wondering if you could help me out, I'm a little confused with the pronunciation. When I pronounce 안녕하세요 I always pronounced the beginning of 세 as an s sound. The number 3 looks like it would be ses not set 셋. Could you help me understand the pronunciation please.
@won1853
@won1853 5 жыл бұрын
*Short explanation* - ㅅ is pronounced differently depending on its position in a syllable. If it's the initial consonant, like in 세, it's [s]. If it's the final consonant, like in 넷, it's [t]. So 셋 should be pronounced like [set], not [ses]. 넷 is [net]. *Longer explanation* - There are actually only 7 consonant sounds that are used at the end of a syllable - ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅇ. All the other consonants change their sounds. ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅎ become ㄷ, which is why 셋 is pronounced like [섿]. ㅋ becomes ㄱ, which is why 부엌(kitchen) is pronounced like [부억]. ㅍ becomes ㅂ, which is why 무릎(knee) is pronounced like [무릅]. One exception to this rule is when ㅇ immediately follows the final consonant. In that case, the original consonant sound carries over. For example, 높이(height) is pronounced like [노피], not [놉이] or [노비].
