some years ago, a major league baseball team had a player from China. His name was Hu. When Hu got to first base, the announcer was so exicited because he had waited his entire career to say, "Hu's on first".

There was a Taiwanese baseball player Chin-Lung Hu who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2007 to 2010 (currently plays for the Fubon Guardians in the Chinese Pro Baseball League). "Who's On First" was first performed on the vaudeville stage in 1937. When it was performed on radio in 1938 it became their most requested routine. The version here is from their TV show "The Abbott And Costello Show" in 1951. That is why they have the routine down pat. It is still the funniest skit.

Lou Costello (the short guy) was the comedian, he hired Bud Abbott (the taller man) and insisted on a 60/40 split of the profits... going to Abbott. He said comedians are a dime a dozen but good straight men are hard to find.

Who's On First is hands down the funniest comedy routine of all time, I love watching people discover it, especially young folks. Other comedians had done similar wordplay routines, but Abbott & Costello perfected it with this routine, and specifically the performance in the video you reacted to. It's easily the best rendition of it. They're also responsible for one of my all-time favorite movies, Hold That Ghost. It leaves me in stitches every time I watch it.

None of the acting routine was done the same way whenever they did this skit. Each time they did the skit it was always done a little bit different from the last time they did it. Costello could make you think he was really mad but it was all in the act that they performed. They were just that good together. Other teams were Laurel and Hardy and of course The Three Stooges, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, and others that I can't remember. Just remember Costello was not really mad at Abbott and he wasn't confused either. I believe this type of comedy was called slapstick comedy. Great video.

This routine took place in 1952, two years after I was born. Most of the entertainers of that era, started their careers in Vaudeville & many made the transition to TV. They were so well practiced at their routines they would come off seamlessly, as this one did, having done it for, in some cases, for decades.

A true classic that stands the test of time and funny, its charms are apparent on each succeeding generation that discovers it. Isn't it great that we have clips like this so se can continue to laugh together at great comedy? The question isn't is is old, it's, is it good? And the answer always comes back, YES it is. It so nice you were able to see this great comedy duo

These two were famous even for people like me who grew up after they were dead or retired, because television stations would show the many movies they made together. You shouldn't feel bad about having trouble following their rapid speech: by design, they are talking as fast as they possibly can, way faster than most people ordinarily speak, as part of the fun.

You have praised it a lot but have not paid attention to the fact that this was in 1953! I have seen old movies of different languages & it's not just this Abbott & Costello but everyone of that generation & era speak & understand way more faster than the people of today. The old era which many of today's generation have an impression that it's backward, is better than today in so many ways. The intelligence, morals, people's health & everything. Hope you watch some more old videos just once in a while. The other videos of Abbott & Costello too are equally fantastic.

My father used to read biographies to me for bedtime stories when I was a kid. I still have the biography of Bud Abbot and Lou Costello, and the auto-biography of Moe Howard from the Three Stooges. Bud and Lou used to call the "Who's On First?" routine "baseball." They had the routine memorized so well that they could vary the length as needed. If they were appearing on a show and they had a 5-minute window of time, they could give you five minutes of baseball, or 7, or 6 as needed. Another thing- Bud used to get angry letters about how mean he was to Lou, but in real life it was the other way around- Lou was more unpleasant and demanding than Bud.
