@Gordon Payne There is no such thing as 'talking white'. What you are saying is considered toxic colorism. Just because they are highly educated and have good pronunciations of words, does not mean they are any less black. This is yet another reason why there is black on black prejudices, colorism, and racism; is cause of people like you having messed up ideas in their heads that us as black people have to act a certain way or you consider us to be 'acting white'. Give me a break with that toxic mess. Every single black person is an individual with their own personality and their own way of how they like to speak. So stop with the toxic colorism. You are part of the problem.

@Gordon Payne That is a very common Southern African accent (more specifically private school accent). It may not sound "African" because to you because Southern Africans rarely participate in KZbin videos in general. That is why a lot of people associate Nigerian or Ghanian culture more strongly as African, we see them more often talking on African culture. So I don't blame you for thinking this way. But as a Southern African, I could tell immediately they were Southern African and probably South African (which they were).

@@kneecapbuster807 some can speak and understand fluently because they've watched yt or been out the country so in a way they alreay know most of the problems colored people go through (themselves included), but a lot know lil bit of it, haven't been outside the country, -the elderly doesn't use social media- and basically can't understand most of what they're saying, esp when fluent English (just like any other language) is spoken with speed and with different accents
@EnTheSauce
@EnTheSauce 5 жыл бұрын
@@kneecapbuster807 My experience here is that Koreans can definitely speak English well, but there's a very large gap between speaking and listening. When we learn a foreign language, we're much more likely to be able to text and and speak, but listening is hard. There are also things that won't translate well because phrases don't exist or are completely different in Korean. So there are points that some won't understand without subtitles.

It’s sad that Korean people have those preconceived notions about black people. Koreans HEAVILY participate in black culture through music and style so you would think they would be a little more open. The likelihood that a problematic black person is going to come to korea and cause problems is slim to none. The black people who actually want to take the time to travel and immerse themselves in culture are the LEAST of Korean people’s worries. It’s a bit frustrating.

Okay, one thing I will like Korean people and anybody else that are not black to know that have a hard time accepting and understanding black people is that, just because you see a black person doesn't mean they all come from the same place. Black people are all over the world. There are American, African, Caribbean, European black people. All black people are not good at singing and dancing just like all of us are not the same shade of color. Black people come in all different shades, sizes, facial features, hair textures, etc. Some black people are loud and some black people are quiet. Some black people eat meat and some only eat plants. I think people don't take the time to look at black people as if we are human because people are occupied with being "fearful" of us. I will never understand or get why anyone would think that just because there are people with melanin in their skin that would make us less human. We are just like anybody else on this earth that is human.

As a person that likes Korean culture, supports idols, and the music this video was very upsetting to watch for a few reasons. Placing black individuals in order to answer questions about OBVIOUS racist reasons and OBVIOUS experiences that we all know about isn't going nowhere if you continuously disregard adding subtitles. Most Korean people need to also understand the matters that are being discussed and need to acknowledge what's happening in their own country, it's not just other countries. Stop using black people as clickbait, views, in order to gain profit, or act like these types of videos are teaching everyone because not everyone speaks or understands English. If you want to actually "help" black people DO IT PROPERLY or RESPECTFULLY do it, otherwise don't help at all and DON'T GO around asking black people to be in your videos if you TRUELY DON'T WANT TO HELP.... it's that simple. What's also very upsetting is that you guys know all this deep down but choose to actively ignore and be careless to these sensitive issues on your channel. It's yet NOT educating the people that actually need education in regards to the racism in Korea apparently. Black people being HUMANS too or being treated equally is too difficult for most people, unfortunately, it's also "hard to understand" "it's irritating to advocate it" and "very tough to acknowledge these matters apparently". It's just even disturbing how ignorant some people are to these problems and sadder how it's soo normalised in many countries including Korea.

Don't let this video put you off from going. You can still go. Just ignore all the immature fools around you that are trying to ruin your trip. They are dumb and uneducated. You just have to be strong and be yourself. But importantly of all, love yourself. It's not just Korea, sadly it's other countries that don't have a lot of black people. The world can act alien to us. Annoyingly it's just something we have to put up with if we want to travel around the world. I have dreams going to Korea, but I want to go to a part where there's other ethnic tourists. And most of all, I want to visit the nature side of Korea. Not just the towns and cities 😊

What sets Africans and Koreans apart is respect. While Africans are willing to be aporoachable and respectful, majority of Koreans have no respect for those who do not resemble their shade of color. If you are not aware or uneducated about a person culture its obvious you must not infiltrates their bubble or behave unethical. Making excuses such as "oh they don't know" or "oh their culture is different" is ignorant. These excuses give Koreans the power to continue with their behaviors. At the end of the day, you don't have to like the person but you should make a priority to be respectful.

@@chrisc1184 there's a way you can treat someone and feel welcomed and a way you can treat someone and make them feel uncomfortable. @@lynnelitali4204 I already touched on the point that ppl are not seeing as Blacks as animals. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect for sure and people that touch others without permission have no boundaries and are rude. But you're pretending that Asians aren't treated like utter crap in Black neighborhoods (and even outside them) in the US (just look at all the coronavirus assaults). My point is that it's so easy for Black people to say (Enter race) BAD. But they never acknowledge problems within their culture and communities as well towards other races, especially racist attitudes, and racist assaults. I'm really sick of the Black people are victims narrative. We should def call out bad behavior no matter what, but pretending that bad behavior is one-sided is hypocritical and exhausting.

Put that aside, I feel extremely embarassed yet frustrating each time when I literally have to lecture anyone about other people or cultures, in this case stereotypes based on race or skin color. I hate bearing this burden of lecturing my relatives about people from different ethnicites because since many in my relatives has some kind of racial stigma against other people. I am asian and I am sometimes utterly disgusted over the ignorance of my own people, yet I hope that in the future these people start to see more foreigners, then they might get used to a new and wider environment, hopefully acknowledge and reduce these racial stereotypes.

This by no means says these ladies don't have experiences that are a problem that needs fixing. These are also a lot of a issues all foreigner's of all colors experiences, I have naturally red hair and I'm a halfie, I've been warned that I might have a lot of problems when I move there and to consider dying my hair unless I like my hair being petted and even cut in crowds. But I believe in general Koreans in Korea need to get themselves up to speed with cultures and people and not just education. Currently, the behavior as a whole almost seems like a deliberate ignorance. Time for people to grow.

I have been to Korea for a two weeks holiday and I can say the staring is definitely a thing there. But apart from the claimed ignorance, you still see people who are willing to help and for the clubs, I went to "play ground" a club in Korea where they ask for your country of origin and I was surprised when they played YEMI ALADE'S (BUM BUM BUM) its a Nigerian music by the way and I appreciated that a lot. Korea is a still a beautiful country and anyone interested should still visit, you will still met people asking you how do you dance like that, lol.

I'm kinda disappointed to some extent with the answers given by the interviewee's. Not all black people can sing/dance and some of us aren't as expressive. Yes, being known for dancing and singing is a positive generalisation but that doesn't mean we should accept that stereotype cause it negates the negative ones.

For us as black people we are hated for no reason and we get backlash and other things too sometimes I find it difficult for me if I move to South Korea but there's some disadvantages I would have is Korean people judging me based on my appearance and curly hair and the way I look I'm on the curvy and chubby side I've been stalked a lot and I'm uncomfortable and uneasy when it comes to my personal space and privacy I am very self aware of my privacy and personal space it's not true that we fight and get in peoples faces as a 24 year old grown black woman I really take personal space and privacy very seriously I don't like it when people are in my business and asking personal stuff I tend to get very moody we all human beings I actually don't like it when people ask me about my own stuff I've been asked about a lot of things and I've experienced racism too I find it infuriating and really aggravating my parents are very concerned about me and my sister going to South Korea I would want to go there but I plan on traveling to Japan for a while before traveling to South Korea

i put a thumbs DOWN for this video because I have noticed that there is a trend on you-tube of Korean you-tubers putting out content on KZbin to act like they are educating the Korean community about black culture but I am convinced that this is only for views because it is a trend. The reason why I say this is because they do not bother to put Korean subtitles on these videos. These women did not come to share their experiences only just for the fun of it, but these experiences are shared so that it can hopefully change the minds and attitudes of Koreans towards black people and that both races can build better relations with one another. I can assume that not all Koreans can speak English or french or the other non-Korean languages that are options for subtitles. I tired of seeing content of black traumatic experiences in Korea for only just views and not education for the people that it is meant to be for. It would be weird if I was making a video of traumatic experiences of Koreans faced in America and the things that they wanted to educate to Americans about Koreans but I only had Korean subtitles. How would us Americans learn from our own prejudiced views if we don't know what they are saying? It would be only right if one would assume that I made the video to just do it for trending views and not for education purposes. Next time, please take the time out to put Korean subtitles so that these type of videos can educate Koreans as well. I would assume that these black women did not want to go through these experiences just so that people would take advantage of their experiences just to get views for you. I wish that i could translate this into Korean so that it could be knowledgeable for everyone.

I feel like it only looks like Koreans are closed-minded because they live in a collective society where people are expected to act like everyone else whereas most of us grew up in individualistic societies where standing out and being different is encouraged.Because of this it is only natural for Koreans to automatically put people into boxes because that is how Korean society functions. This behavior is very difficult to unlearn, even the Korean language organizes people into categories ( it has seven levels of speech all dependent on who you are speaking to). It often comes as a shock to us when we're expected to act a certain way because of how we look, but Korea is all about expectations. I'm not trying to defend racism at all (because only sloppy thinkers would defend sloppy thinking) but I thought I would at least try to understand unintentionally offensive behavior.
@Matchalata

This is actually very true. I would hope that foreigners think about what issues koreans face in their native country, and consider that they will also suffer equally or worse due to those korean standards. And it's only important to know this because you can't just expect the society as a whole to get rid of prejudices when they have prejudices amongst their own people. All of the issues that foreigners face (though the details might be different) like lookism, classism, sexism, ageism, and religious discrimination Koreans face as well, to the extent that suicide rates are ridiculously high.

I understand that media can affect (movies and stuff), but this issue has been talk in hello counselor, different ent. shows, korean youtube channel. Also when idols do appropriation, people talk about it. So I don't understand why it's so difficult for them to study more? Investigate, inform themselves. Now at days there are not excuses to not get knowledge. Also, I'm guessing that their tourism and entry of foreign has increased, so they really should

It’s been a month since im in Korea and I can say that’s everything that I have been said is the reflection of the reality. I didn’t experienced any racism being here but I get pretty much get stared everyday. At first it’s was really weird but I think with the time I got used to it. Actually I encountered a lot of elderly people and they were really nice to me they were saying « oh you’re so pretty ! » all the time and smile at me in metro/bus/ street. Sometimes they are curious and ask a lot of questions... Once of them touched my hair once without asking... And the part about being considered as beautiful as Perry said take an important role of how they’re going to act with u i think. They judge a lot by the look. ( not everyone of course) And also I encountered french people (a family) they we’re white and they told me that koreans people were really cold to them. The girl even told me that a korean man said she had a weird face and seemed stupid. I just hope more black people come in Korea in the future and have their own experience. To be honest it’s was not easy for me as a introvert at first. I was really scared of coming in South Korea after what people reported. But I was actually really surprised when I arrived in Korea with my mom. People were so nice and welcoming to us. I didn’t excepted that. I was kinda of chocked. So for now Korea has been good to me and I’ve gained confidence since im here. I just hope that’s in couple of years Korea will be more open about foreigners and especially black people. (english isn’t my first language so sorry for my potential mistakes ^^)

I mean this is a common experience for any country that isn't familiar with foreign visitors. Korea has never been a desired country to live in until the Hallyu wave, many old people have never seen foreigners. With time Korea will be a good tourist destination, but they have better things to focus on like the threat of North Korea. Foreigners are treated badly because of the USA Military, some would always rape women, start fights and wreck places and get away with their crimes - this is where anti- foreigners sentiment has come in from (the USA military now has a curfew) this has been going on for many years since the Korean War. I don't blame them, but with time Koreans will open up
