English People try Korean Green Onion Cereal!!?

Recently Korean Kellogs has released a controversial "Spring Onion Cereal", so we thought it was the perfect opportunity to have some of our friends and family try it alongside some other legendary Korean cereals: of course Oreo O's and the new Peanut Butter O's!!

whoever translated Chris’ ‘Spring Annyong’ to 파파이 is a downright GENIUS. as someone whose first language is English and speak intermediate Korean, i’m always amazed by the translations but don’t give credit often enough. to properly translate a pun is hard; to translate English puns to a Korean-equivalent pun is on another level. kudos man!

So here's the extra story of the spring onion flavor. In 2004, nongshim-kellogg(Kelloggs korea) launched that vote maketing program for KIDS(emphasized); the brown one for chocolate party, the green one for spring onion party. The problem was that the attitude of the video was very unfair for the green one. All the good reaction and characteristics were given to the brown one, and the green one's characteristics was just a big ass××le. So the people on the internet were pissed with the deception, so they gave their votes to the green one(fun fact: the tech for the vote was SO cheep, you could do it again by just refreshing the page). The story ends by the startled company erasing all the faulty votes and adding additional on-site voting at amusement parks. The game shifted from the green one to the brown one, and that lasted for nearly 16 years. Korean people think this is a fraud and a dictatorship and made up politic memes about it. Asha Mae 파 is read as “pa” which means onion and 이 is read as “ee” or a long “e” sound so together you read it as pa-pa-ee which sounds like “bye bye” :)

Ok for yalls who are confused about the spring onion cereal, here's a bit of backstory: Kellogg's cereal once did an election-type event where people could vote for the new president of "Chexx world". Candidate number 1, 'Chekki', was the representative of the milk chocolate party, and candidate number 2, 'Chakka', was the representative of the spring onion party. The winner would get to decide the flavor of the new Chexx cereal. The problem was, Kellogg's intentionally made Chakka look like a villain in their attempt to urge children to vote for Chekki. A lot of people did NOT like this, and some people in a Korean forum website decided that they would all go and vote for Chakka. They soon found out that the online voting site let you vote more than once if you refreshed the page, and Chakka ended up getting a ton of extra votes. Later, Kellogg's decided that they would be getting rid of these extra votes since they weren't exactly fair, but even without the extra votes Chakka was winning. The spring onion party had won. OR SO THEY THOUGHT. Kellogg's had been conspiring with Chekki to secretly get his party the winning spot in any way possible. They ended up rigging the votes so that the milk chocolate party would win the election. It was a sad day for democracy. Chakka's supporters were furious about the outcome, and it soon became a meme in certain online forums. For 15 years, Chekki's dictatorship lasted on. Chakka's supporters were still fighting for the democracy they had lost, but Chekki's supporters were trying their best to cover up the outrage. Then, in a beam of light, Kellogg's youtube channel came out with a new video. In that video, the marketing team proclaimed that they were "very sorry" about the rigged elections, and that they had come out with a new cereal that was spring onion flavored. On that day, the internet rejoiced. For we had won. We had earned our democracy back. Balance was restored, and Sir Chakka could finally be at peace.

파맛 첵스에 대해서 얘기하고싶어요. 어떤이들은 민주주의의 잘못된 선택의 결과라고들 하죠. 첵스 제조사는 수 년전 투표를 기획했어요. 자사의 첵스시리얼 캐릭터(악당인 파맛과 주인공 초코맛) 두고 답이 정해진 투표를 진행했죠. 당연히 초코첵스가 이길거라 생각하고 투표를 진행했어요. 하지만 결과는 그들의 예상을 크게 벗어났죠. 파맛은 함정처럼 한두개 섞어주는 녀석이었는데 파맛만으로 이루어진 첵스라니, 호기심도 동했지만 사실 이 결과에는 한국네티즌들의 저항정신이 반영되었다고 볼 수 있어요. 당시 비슷하게 모 커뮤니티에서 인기포켓몬을 투표하는 투표가있었죠, 거기서도 거의 천편일률적으로 정해진 답(피카츄,꼬북이,파이리)을 선택하지않고 당연히 소외되고 배척받을 것이라고 생각할 코일이 우승했어요. 투표이고 공정한 선택이라고 말 하지만 사실 그들은 답을 정해놓고 그 것에 따르길 원하죠. 누구나 싫어할 듯 한, 기괴한 외형의 악당 포지션 캐릭터를 상대로 내놓고, 이쁘고 멋진 주인공을 뽑길 강요하죠. 우린 그게 마음에 들지 않았고 민주주의니까 선택으로 보여준거죠. 그들에게 이렇게 물어본겁니다. '투표했어. 그래서 이제 어쩔거야?' 시리얼회사는 거짓된 민주주의를 연출했다가 네티즌의 심판을 받았다고 할 수 있죠ㅎㅎ 그렇게 파맛 첵스가 우승했지만 수 년간 결과를 무시해왔죠. 그리고 이제서야 한정판이라며 맛이 미묘하게 나온 파맛 첵스를 내놓으며 '너희의 선택이 이렇게 잘못된 결과를 내놓았다.' 이렇게 말하고 있는겁니다. 수 년이 지났는데, 맛을 테스트 해보고, 설문도 해보고 좋게 개선을 할 여지가 있었음에도 그저 파맛첵스 이제라도 냈다는 그저 형식적이고 생색내기식 한정판 맛 없는 파맛첵스 제품을 내놓고 맛없다는 반응이 나오면 그 것이 민주주의의 잘못된 선택의 결과라고 말하는 것은 무책임하고 무례한 일이에요. 화가 나지 않을 수가 없습니다.

바람직한 민주주의라 보기는 어렵지 않을까 합니다. 원하는 답을 정해놓고 뻔한 결과를 기대한 켈로그도, 반발심에 또는 재미를 추구하여 표를 몰아준 네티즌도... 애초에 켈로그가 정상적이지 않은 투표를 기획했으니 네티즌이 본때를 보여줬다고 생각할 수는 있어도 이를 두고 민주주의가 어쨌느니 하는 식의 주장은 유머로만 받아들이는게 좋을 것 같아요. 그리고 켈로그가 형식적이고 생색내기용으로 형편없는 제품을 내놓았다하는데 솔직히 네티즌을 훈계하기 위해 일부러 맛없게 냈다고 보기는 어렵지 않을까 합니다. 기업이 그런 이유로 신제품을 개발한다고 생각하기 어렵습니다. 생색내기 보다는 마케팅 전략으로 잘 활용한 거죠. 실제로 굉장히 성공적이었구요.

@@aisweren109 생색도 마케팅전략의 일부였다고 봅니다. 태진아님 광고 가사 내용에서 늦었지만 약속을 지킨다는 부분이 강조되어서 그렇게 해석했구요. 그 많은 시간 오랜시간 무시해오던 파맛 첵스를 더 많이 테스트 해보고 소비자여론 수렴해서 더 좋게 내놓을 수 도 있지않았을까 하는 아쉬운 마음에서 맛이 없는 걸 대충 내놨다고 격하게 표현했습니다. 그게 훈계하려고 내놓았다고 생각하진 않습니다. 오히려 철저히 마케팅목적으로 내놔서 이슈화는 성공했지만, 아시다시피 16년 전의 '추억팔이'입니다. 그때의 네티즌들과의 사건을 가지고 마케팅을 하기에는 기다린 시간에 비해 결과물에 성의가 부족했구나 하는데서오는 기업에 대한 실망감이죠. 솔직히 맛의 방향성이 실망스럽습니다. 차라리 성의없이 대충 일부러 맛없게 냈다고 믿고싶네요. 달콤한 파맛 시리얼...? 투표가 바람직하지 않다고 저항한다며 반대쪽에 몰표 한 것이 정답은 아니겠죠. 다만, 바람직한 것은 잘 못 된 것을 느끼고 행동한다는 부분입니다. 양비론을 내세우시기 보다는 우리가 그 상황에서 그럼 어떤 행동을 했어야 하는지 나아갈 방향을 제시해주시는 게 더 바람직하지 않을까요? 물론 현실정치 얘길 가져오고싶지는 않습니다ㅎㅎ
