OMG they understood the Ukrainian song! The power of music! 1."Reminds me of a field" - yes, it's a traditional springtime agrarian song about sowing seeds of hemp! 2. "Modern and classic feel" - it's house music based on a traditional ritualistic song! 3. "Like casting a spell" - YES! It's a ritual song that call spring to come.

honestly, people don't know much about Eastern Europe which is disappointing, Slavic culture and music is just amazing there are even channels for that certain music in those countries. I feel like every slav country felt proud of Ukraine that day. They should have won because they sing in their own language and the music is culture true country representation. Its disappointing that some countries only sing in English even if its not their native language bc it might get them more votes. Italy also deserved their win tho this year was full of winners cant complain. Honestly every country is a winner for me

GO-a, the Ukrainian band, mixes folk music and electro. The singer is trained into traditional « white voice » (cristaline voice). The song is an ode to the pagan god Shum to make the long winter go away and let spring in. What’s so powerful is that they use traditional folk song themes (seasons) for a modern context (the long winter is a metaphor for the Covid pandemie).

Shum sounds like szum (шум), which in west and east slavic languages means... well, it's translated as noise, but most of time noise in english means unwanted, unpleasant, or loud sounds. While meaning at least in my knowledge of szum(шум) is more of light, natural, sometimes soothing sounds, often caused by wind, most often related to "forest noise" like singing birds and leaves rustling in the wind or "sea noise" the sound of the wind and the sound of the water hitting the sand on the shore. Hence probably the name of this god, as he is responsible for these sounds of the forest, especially since Slavic culture had tendency to give "soul" to objects, animals, plants and phenomena. Also it's probably some kind of local Ukrainian version of the Leshy, slavic deity of forest.

When she say that Ukrain's song SHUM sounds like a spell, about sound reminding him about being on a field, that is so spot on that it's almost creepy. I'm not a Ukrainian so someone else feel free to correct me, but the way I understood it based on interviews is that the song is a "modernized" version of an old spring festival to go from the cold, dead winter into the warmer, living spring. The sun rising in the end and all that. So it is pretty spot on that it is " a spell" being cast back in the odl days to summon the Spring so the people could finally start to farm and grow food again. That's why they are pouring grains towards the end. They are way better than me at understanding the performances! EDIT: Just to add, based on interviews and articles they chose this pagain ritual as a way to usher in spring after the cold year of Covid. So now when we seem to be able to get a grasp of it and push the pandemic back, that we should slowly be able to come back outside and live in the world, just like when the cold winter tyurns to spring.

I was kinda hoping they would react to Serbia's Loco Loco. Before listening to the song I was expecting it to be a classic turbo-folk song(a genre really popular in Serbia) which I really don't like. I was super surprised the song has a classic kpop song composition. It has the regular verses, pre-choruses and choruses(like every pop song) but it has a dance break and then a bridge before a final chorus where they flex their vocals (in the live performance they walk to the other part of the stage during the part that is the dance break in the MV though). Also the song starts with them saying the name of their group which is such a common thing for kpop girl groups (Itzy, Stayc, Blackpink...) and they used Spanish words which is also common for kpop songs these days. Even though the song composition is like kpop they still kept a lot of elements from turbo-folk in the instrumental which kept it true to their country's popular music.

4:30 it’s interesting that you say that, because this song was actually a take on a ritual, so I guess it really is like casting a magic spell.

I'm happy they liked the French song and performance. I mean, I love the other four songs (and I do listen quite regularly to the Ukrainian and Azerbaijan songs), but Voilà brings out something different from me. For the others, I was like DAMN THIS IS COOL/EPIC and just vibing and wanting to dance. For France, it didn't sound like much at first and then it grew on me, and your emotions just rise to the surface and I finished watching the performance nearly not breathing and with tears in my eyes. It's just really powerful, in a very different way. Anyway, Eurovision was really great this year!! 👌

I really want them to react to Serbia & Croatia 😭 because I feel like they’d be so into it because of the tempo - also I’d love to see them react to all of the countries

As a Korean-American Ukraine has similar songs that we Koreans have, cuz usually we combine our songs with traditional and modern styles.
