I hope everyone in the comments can understand that they aren’t misgendering. They are using they/them pronouns it’s just the captions messing up the pronouns. oh whew i was worried about them "only getting the pronouns right half the time". that makes me feel better, and i understand it's hard when there are gendered words in your language. it makes me feel lucky that english doesn't have any gendered words and happy too because it makes it easier for people who don't use she/her and he/him to be able to use the pronouns that they are comfortable with and properly represent them; and easier for the people around them to use the right pronouns instead of having trouble using gender neutral words that are normally gendered. (i hope that makes sense i feel like my sentence is fucked but im too lazy to rewrite it properly)
@xdiaxan3 жыл бұрын
I really hate when that happens- When English-only speakers start judging first instead of asking if the translation/eng subs was incorrect or not. I swear I see a bunch of toxic, non-Korean "kpop fans" make the same mistake, misunderstanding an idol's words or twisting their words so they look bad when in reality the idols didn't even mean it to be bad at all. Translating Korean to English is difficult and some sayings are difficult to translate well to the exact meaning too; but English-Subs-Only people are quick to judge a different language based off a third-person-translator. It gets frustrating at times.

It seems so strange to me that they didn't know that women can be trans men, that they can have top surgery, and that they can grow a beard if they do testosterone hormone replacement therapy. I guess that's just because transgender people do not have any visibility in Korea because of how conservative it is. In the US I feel like this is common knowledge.

I'm not terribly surprised that they don't realize everyone has both hormones and just the quantity changes how one looks. I've seen this channel, or perhaps a similar one (Dimple I think?) where they met their first openly gay person. And any mistakes or unknown information comes from that conservative upbringing - like I heard wrong pronouns used, trying to guess if they had surgery, and in that video about gays asking who is top and bottom or who is the man and the woman. I'm just really glad that the newer generation knows the words and are so open to learning, as they'll be the ones teaching the youngest generation shortly (or already if they have kids). What a rambled mess I wrote. Sorry. But it's definitely weird to me too, but I understand why it happened.

It's really interesting how people assume that transition is all about surgery, and sometimes they conclude that it's weird and unnatural from that. @ninetailskwami3 жыл бұрын
you're right that for trans people it is something that is different in your brain, but it's not something that is inherently terrible to live with. it is like any other way a brain can be, we have our own struggles, but it is not a bad thing. most do experience discomfort with their body though, or with how people around them treat them. but i wouldn't say it is terrible to live with. it has its positives really, the experiences you get to go through that no cis people get to see, are incredible. you get to understand people more from their point of view because of the way you've personally lived different lives. you can understand how men and women experience life, and often grow compassion and understanding for other people who maybe aren't trans but are going through something also very different from social expectations, and you can be there for them and open-minded in a way you might not have been if you were cis.

I don't think that will happen for a very long time. They barely know/understand the more well known sexualities that most people in Western countries already know a lot about. I think it would be too difficult to approach until Korea learns and understand more about LGBTQ+ people in general.
@faestreya3 жыл бұрын
@@ravena1441 With all due respect, this stuff doesn't necessarily get easier if you just hide parts of the community until they "learn more". All that will happen is that they will adjust to binary trans people and then become more skeptical about non binary people because they had never heard of them before. It's best for them to learn all at once while they're still in the stage of "what else is there to learn?" Especially because.. There are already a lot of trans and non binary people actually in Korea. It's not really something exclusive to the west, so the sooner the learn the better for the community that's actually a part of their own nation.
@ravena14413 жыл бұрын
@@faestreya I didn't say anyone needed to hide it. Nor did I say that it shouldn't be explained to them before they "learn more". I also never claimed that there weren't people of any particular gender or sexual orientation in Korea. I said that it would be harder to address until they understand more about other sexualities and relationships. I believe you misinterpreted what I wrote. They seemed to barely be able to wrap their heads around transgender people, and so, it would make sense that they would struggle (possibly even more so) with nonbinary, genderfluid and bigender people. Hell, I bet you they would struggle more so with ace and aro people because even people in Western countries can't wrap their heads around it. Also, I think the only reason this video exists is because transgenders a more well known than nonbinary, genderfluid and so on people. They are not misgendering them in korean. Korean is a language that doesn’t (or very rarely) uses gendered pronouns so it’s the translator’s fault. When referring to someone in korean, it is assumed the listener already knows who the subject is so the pronouns are omitted or gender neutral
@bora38593 жыл бұрын
@@minjimunji for clarity, i commented in reference to rua saying "they both became trans after they grew up" or smth to that effect. again, the translation could be wacky or smth - maybe he meant that they both transitioned? in general, i was putting that message out there so ppl can realize that trans women have always been women (same goes for trans men ofc!). but ty again for your explanation :))))

@@bora3859 ah okay I see what you’re saying. I agree, trans people don’t “decide” to be trans. Though they can decide to transition physically, they can’t decide how they feel internally

for anyone who doesnt watch a lot of korean content: the korean language does NOT use gendered pronouns. no one is being misgendered here 🥰 programs like google translate automatically change the gender neutral pronoun "그" to "he" because ENGLISH dictates that adding gendered words to a sentence that didnt use them originally is somehow more grammatically correct than simply using a direct translation of they/them. example: if a korean person says "robert downey jr is cool. they have a beard." its stupidly considered more correct to translate it as "rdj is cool. HE has a beard." even tho the speaker never said he. for this reason mismatched english pronouns is a COMMON mistake in the subtitles of korean videos even when the subject is cis, so please understand its a problem w/ the english language not w/ anyone actually misgendering people 💙💕🤍💕💙

As a trans guy that's been out for a decade now it's always interesting watching people figure out we exist. Aside from the initial shock people experience, we tend to lose our friends, family, and the protection of the law. It's pretty scary.

I really hope the world just in a breath knocks it off with b.s. of not understanding each other's differences. If it harms no one, why is it a problem? You wouldn't be rude to someone dissatisfied with their home and completely remodels it. Why be that way with people?

I really enjoyed the video & love how respectful all of them were! :) but I'd like to ask if the misgendering at some parts was made by them or the translator? (if e.g. a person that was born male transitions into a woman you should use she/her pronouns, not he/him)
@rumjhumgupta71373 жыл бұрын
its only translation, Korean is usually gender neutral
@jazwragg3 жыл бұрын
I think it's a mistake by the translator. As far as I'm aware (and pls correct me if I'm wrong) Korean doesn't really use pronouns like he/him or she/her, so when speaking it's all neutral and based on context what gender they're referring to, so the misgendering has happened in translation when an English pronoun has to be chosen. I don't know who translates these videos but perhaps they sent a transcript of the Korean to someone to translate into English and without the context provided by the video mistakes were made?

I have so so much to say about this video, nothing negative ! Honestly it's endearing ,, Transgender is split into two categories, or umbrellas, one being binary (man and female) and nonbinary, which can be a lot of things but the basic is they don't fit into the binary genders (male and female), 3:03 personally the comment about mind and body, I'll explain it the best I can, it just feels wrong, like no matter what you do or shove it aside its so daunting because everyone perceives you in a way you've never truly seen yourself. Thing of it like looking in the mirror and you see fuzz and static and not truly your face nor body, because you can't see what others see. 3:35 I was surprised to hear that ftm (female to male) was more common to them but maybe I just happen to know way more transmasc people, it was,, honestly sweet,, to not be called something tragic or a trend. 1:57 Not all transgender people are brave enough to face who they are, they feel something is wrong but are so afraid to face it, so that's why some will even get married and have kids, they don't know what else to do. 6:34 Me (They/he) and my brother (He/They) are actually both transgender, it's more common then you'd think, when you grow around people you trust like that at a close age,, you tend to be similar, not the same but similar. They always say birds of a feather flock together and thats a very good example with that.

Trans people are the hottest people. I feel like it's because they aren't themselves in their previous bodies but when they finally change their confidence just skyrockets and they can finally be themselves and it's such a beautiful transformation. Their confidence is so beautiful. So therefore they are just beautiful. I use to have a HUGE crush on this trans guy. He was a girl previously and we were friends. A few years went by and I saw them again and he had gotten surgery and everything and I could see the difference in the way he felt and his presence. He was great. Trans people I love you! 💙💖🤍

The fact that most people wouldn't even recognise that someone they're passing in public is trans makes so much of the anti-trans rhetoric and politics so weirdly funny (in a tragic way) to me. One of my closest friends is a trans woman. She came out to us about four years ago, no one in our friendgroup had any issues changing how we address her and no one felt weird or awkward about it. Seeing her slowly transform over the yers have been beautiful, seeing her smile more genuinely, seeing her personality truly blossom. She has only just recently gotten the ok from doctors to get surgeries and she'll be shaving down her Adam’s apple soon as the first procedure. People who talk about "kids getting pressured into being trans and getting irreversible surgeries" have no idea how difficult it is even for adults to get those surgeries. My friend has had to fight for this extremely hard and if she had showed any hesitation at all at any step of the way, she wouldn't have been able to get the ok for it. I know this is kinda rambly, but I'm just so proud of her and it infuriates me that some ignorant, hateful people out there would want to deny people like my friend the chance of truly becoming themselves and living a fulfilling, happy life as the person they were meant to be just because it makes them feel a bit uncomfortable (even though it has literally no impact on their own lives) and seeing the people in this video being so respectful and understanding made me kinda emotional.

Yes, 'older' people can struggle with these feelings just as much as younger. Sometimes even more because they struggle alone for so long and try to push the feelings away. They have partners and kids they feel they would let down if they transitioned now. Many times established jobs and they didn't grow up in a time where this was commonly accepted.
