This video is worth watching !!!! I would only use “adjusted” “repaired” if I didn’t run into the awesome one! You’re such a knowledgeable and versatile person and you make my English skills crystal clear! I’m genuinely lucky to know your channel! I’m so psyched to watch your videos! I wish my English teacher would be you!

Thanks so much for the kind words. 'Repair' is one of those words that can mean slightly different things depending on the language. I really wanted to make this video to bring it to everyone's attention as I hear it pretty frequently in my classes. It's great to hear you're enjoying the videos - see you in the next one!✌🏻

Thank you for your new KZbin with the expression, "I had my ring repaired"!! Since I had a year ending party with my employee tonight and returned home just a while ago, I haven’t listened to full of it, however I got surprised a little bit at the expression, because "I had my ring repaired" sounded so natural for me at first! Then I understood what you mean as I listened to it, now I think I need to learn more about the verb “repair”. Thank you for lots of things you’ve given to us!!
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hello there, Rick!🎄 Hope you had a nice party and are feeling fine this morning. The word 'repair' seems alright at first, but when you delve a little deeper into what you are actually saying, it can be a confusing verb to use. Thanks so much for watching so far and I hope you enjoy the rest of the video. Cheers!👍🏼

Hello Scott, I watched through your new KZbin and learned a lot. They are not only repair things but also many useful expression like heads up, hand-me-down or "You’ve gotta take a good, long look at your attitude, son." I like your KZbin because you teach us not only useful expressions but also those kinds of useful idiom and proverb things. Looking forward to the next one!!

Hey there, Rick!☺️ I'm so glad you picked up on the key point about 'repair' as well as some of the expressions I talked about. You're really paying attention to the details and I hope it's helping you improve your English, even in some small way. I'm looking forward to putting together the next video starting on Monday morning. All going well, it'll be ready for Saturday evening. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻

Good evening, Scott. Did you update your thumbnail? Your Santa hat looks nice on you. Are you ready for the holidays? Hope Santa Claus is coming to town and your school. Best wishes in advance.
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Good evening, Katsuyoshi! 😊Thank you very much for your kindness. I thought I’d bring a bit of festive cheer for the holidays and put on my Christmas hat. Santa Claus actually visited our school on Sunday for our ‘Meet Santa’ day and we had a great time. Ho! Ho! Ho!🎄
@KatsuYoshiHIRANOАй бұрын
Oh, Santa Claus had already been there last Sunday. So you were ready for his visiting your school. Before he came, you had to put up a Christmas tree and decorate a building.

Yes, preparation began months ago and the big day finally arrived. It was a lot of work, but our team did a great job and most importantly, the kids had a great time talking to Santa.✨

Hi, Scott!🌛 I have a question. I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding, but 'I need to have my belt altered.' sounds a bit too much to me. I feel like 'altered' suggests a bigger change than just adjusting the length or fit. Is it possible that it's not a big deal?🤔
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hey there, EB!✨ Thanks so much for tuning and in and for taking the time to comment, as always. I guess it may be a slight exaggeration, but maybe it's just my background creeping up on me. My father used to make gun belts and gun holsters for the local cowboy community and they often stopped by our house to get their belts 'altered.' It was kind of his hobby and our house was littered with pieces of leather and all kinds of tools. It might sound kind of funny for someone who grew up in the urban city of Glasgow in Scotland, where there isn't a cowboy in sight, but it's the kind of house I grew up in. Kind of trippy looking back at it now. They were mostly American country musicians or cowboy enthusiasts. My dad was a huge fan of John Wayne. So perhaps I overstepped the mark with this one, but it's just a wee example to talk about getting things 'altered' or 'adjusted' instead of using the word 'repair,' which was the main point that I was actually getting it. I apologize for any confusion I may have caused. Thanks so much for the 'eagle eyes' feedback. Cheers!🤠

Hello there!☺️ Thanks so much for watching. I guess a lot of people who watched the video didn't really see anything wrong with the sentence "I had my ring repaired." I hope it helped you in some little way to think more deeply about the word 'repair' and help you improve your English. Have a great week!✌🏻

In the Osaka dialect, 直す is used when you put away things. It is not used when you organize a room. 部屋を直す sounded like "repairing a damaged room" to me just like you hearing "repairing a ring."
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hello there! 🎄 I guess the Osaka dialect has its own way of saying things that people in other parts of Japan wouldn't get at first. It sounded funny to me, but I guess that one of the fun points of learning the finer points of a language or local dialect. Thanks so much for watching and for your input.👍🏼

Hello Scott ! Actually , I had some parts of my house repaired a few months ago, such as the roof that was leaking in places and the tatami-room with slightly collapsed clay wall that will make the room terribly cold in winter. As the house is so old , I feel like I have to fix somewhere of it every year. Last year, I had the old wooden framed windows replaced with the latest aluminum sashes. Most of the time, I enjoy being houseproud and living in the house that my ancestors had taken care of , but that costs more than I had thought. I'm wondering what kind of problems will happen to it next year.
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hello there!☺️ Thanks so much for watching. I noticed you used the word 'house-proud' which I think I mentioned last time. That's great to see. I can imagine an older house would need a lot of repairing, especially with all the earthquakes and typhoons in Japan. In a few more years after everything has been repaired and replaced, it might last for another 50 years - just like a new house. I'm sure it costs an arm and a leg to get it taken care of, but I love the fact that you are trying your best to maintain a house that has been in your family for generations. I really love old houses as they have so much character, are full of stories and are just bursting with memories of the people who lived there. Wonderful stuff!✨

Good morning, Scott. I'm done with moving. I haven't finished organising my room yet. And I don't still get used to a new place. So many words are shown in your latest video. organise / tidy up / clean a room. shorten / lengthen / take in / take out sleeves adjust / alter a belt fix / straighten / button up clothes revise / edit / correct / re-do a sentence To repair and to fix are actions for a broken or damaged something. There are a few more verbs such as to fit, to mend, to justify and to update. If I use one that has a wide variety of uses, I'd choose "to change."
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Good morning, Katsuyoshi!☺️ Hope you're starting to get settled nicely into your new place, but I suppose it'll take a couple of weeks until it starts to feel like home. I talked about a lot of words for having things 'changed' in the video. Probably too many to remember, but I hope everyone will start to realize that we can't use 'repair' for as many situations as you think. We have to think about what we are doing and take it from there. It's definitely not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing, but I guess the word 'change' comes close. Have a good one!✌🏻

Hi, thanks for a helpful video again. It reminds me of some Japanese words that sound same but have slightly different meanings like you said 直す、治す. Speaking of 治す, my daughter got injured one of her knees. I took her to a clinic and she got treatment on the knee. She hasn’t completely got over the injury, but feels better. 治る、治す、直す、直る... I often hesitate to choose which one to use while writing in Japanese especially at work. So confusing.
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hey there, Kahori!✨ There are so many similar-sounding words in Japanese, too. I'm actually not too sure how they are all used, but I'll hopefully get the hang of it one day. 治る、治す、直す、直る… pretty confusing for me.😱 I hope your daughter's knee gets better in time for all the fun festive activities we have coming up - especially Christmas and New Year. There's nothing worse than having injuries or health problems at this time of the year. Cheers!✌🏻

Hi Scott, what is a hand-me-down? does that mean "tailor-made"?
@ThatsEnglishSchoolКүн бұрын
Hey there!✨ A 'hand-me-down' is something that you get from an older sibling, a cousin or a family friend. In most cases it's clothes, but you can also use it for things like toys and school equipment - that kind of thing. - Mum, I'm sick and tired of getting hand-me-downs. I want something brand new that nobody else has ever used. - This sweater is a hand-me-down from my big brother. It's got a couple of holes in it, but my mum says she'll fix them when she has time. Cheers for now!👍🏼

@ omg! thats お下がり!love you Scott! you are a genius:)
Hello there!☺️ They're all so similar and it must be really confusing - for me too. I guess if you're getting a professional in to do some work on your house, one of the simplest ways is to say "I'm getting a new 〜 fitted." - I'm getting a new bathroom fitted. - We're getting a new kitchen fitted. - I got new floors fitted last year. If you're doing it yourself, like DIY, then I'd use "I'm putting in a new 〜." - I'm putting in some new cabinets. - I'm putting in some new paper screens on my windows. - I'm putting in a new fitted kitchen. Of course there are countless patterns and phrasal verbs that you could use, but those are my recommendations to keep things simple. Cheers!✌🏻

Hi there! I was a little bit surprised that you knew Kansai dialect 直す meaning. When it comes to the word 直す、 I would say ,sort it, set them in order,fix it like that.文章を直す、I’d say ,proofread it かな
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hello there!🎄 There are so many expressions out there, even in the Kansai dialect. 'Proofread' is also a good one to use when it comes checking and making amendments to documents etc. Thanks so much for the input!👍🏼

Hi there, Scott! If weight gain caused my rings to feel too tight, I wouldn't ask a jeweler to resize them. Instead, I would commit to a strict diet or rely on Rizap. Managing my weight and health is essential for improving my mental and emotional well-being. I believe that following a rigorous program like Rizap can significantly boost my self-respect and self-esteem. If I keep eating curry mochi, I'll balloon up like a stuffed teddy bear in no time!
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hello there, Hannah! ✨ Your way is by far the most sensible method. Just lose the weight and your rings will fit you again. At this time of the year when people tend to eat and drink just a wee bit too much, I've got a funny feeling there are going to be a few tight rings come the end of January. Mochi curry is not going to help any, but just a little bit's alright. Isn't it…?😉

@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hello there! 'Resize' is probably one of those words that might not roll off the tongue, but it's really useful and commonly-used in this kind of situation. 'Repair' is mainly just used for things which are broken or damaged, aren't they?☺️
@vacuumcarexpoАй бұрын
@ThatsEnglishSchool Thanks for you reply. I didn't know the phrase "roll off the tongue." This is another takeaway from this video. Thanks again!

“Repair is just repair.” That makes perfect sense. In my opinion, 直す means that 元のあるべき姿に戻す.
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
Hello there! ☺️ As you mentioned, the word 'repair' is fundamentally quite simple and we can easily visualize something being 'repaired.' The Japanese verb 直す seems to be able to be used in a wider variety of ways and it's not quite as clear-cut as 'repair.' Thanks so much for your input.👍🏼

In what situation do you use “mend”?
@ThatsEnglishSchoolАй бұрын
@@tappysan Hello there! ✌🏻 'Mend' can be used in a similar way to 'repair,' but I feel it sounds a bit lighter and possibly slightly amateur. They're basically saying the same thing, but 'repair' could be used by a professional service and 'mend' sounds kind of close to DIY - but not all the time. That's how I would describe the 'feeling' of the word. - My dad mended our fence after the typhoon. - I tried to mend my bike by myself, but it was too much for me. - My sister is good at mending things around the house. 'Mend' can also be used for health, relationships and ways of life - He's on the mend after coming down with the flu. - I hope they'll be able to mend their friendship after falling out. - John's trying to mend his ways after being arrested for the 3rd time. I hope that helps. Cheers for now!☺
