That was probably THE BEST keyboard review I have ever seen. I think I am back in the market for hardware... I sold my Mo6 years ago and been only software for production. Polyphony is 200 for the SGX-1 according to the absoluteMusic blog. That's pretty impressive...no wonder you can Sustain notes on one patch and switch patches without the sound dropping...and still have enough polyphony left in the new patch to have a decent sounding sustain of chords (If that makes sense)

You can set your samples (.ksc) files to load at start up. So it's just like flash. Since both motif and kronos take a while to boot up, it's kind of like the same. They both will have your custom set up when they load. I have a kronos :-)

The best thing to do is buy the KRONOS and midi a MOTIFrack XS or ES to the KRONOS that way you get the best of both worlds while spending well under half of the price of a motif XF keyboard by just getting the rack for just the sound generator

Excellent review... I'm more of a Yamaha fan myself, but I bought the Kronos as there was a great deal on it. I have to admit the pianos sound so much better than the motif, amazing sounding machine. But I prefer some of the Yamaha sounds, such as the strings and pad sounds. But both are superb.

After watching these "Kronos" videos several times, I just realized that this is the first generation Kronos. The Kronos X, which is the current version, has a bigger ssd drive, and the option to add a second ssd drive. It's kinda crazy to think that Yamaha really hasn't responded to this yet. The XF was out with the first gen Kronos. The latest release from Yamaha was a white XF. What gives?

kb420ps may be because it is not just about having touch screen and 9 synths. It is about sonics. Regardless of everything, every music professional knows the Motif is THE benchmark and is insanely hard to beat it when it comes to sound. That said, if I am given a free Motif XF and a free Korg Kronos, I would choose the Kronos, simply because of its rather remarkable usability and ease of use.

Wow...what a humble guy in Jamal Hartwell to first of all be willing to be as truthful as he can in saying that, although he loves yamaha, the piano is beter on Kronos. Than to take it further. He even says that if you have a Kronos, you dont even really need samples. Now that is a guy who i would buy samples from. How much more truthful can you be. :)

Nice Moogs too...had to add packs for the XF...love Korg layering & MIDI functions in Combi than Perform mode; Multi-timbral arranging synth=+++. (Not that this is new now). SSD & pipe rox. Flash kinda hasslely.

Sounds creating, convenience during performance (Set list, SST), appearance, combi capabilities - this all makes Kronos above Motif. Sound is personal thing but I prefer Kronos in all cases excepting guitar and some of woodwinds However if someone plays in band they're not are not as much important.. I think that Kronos beats Yamaha if we are talking about live performance.

Great job Jamal. I am Yamaha fiend as well right back to the PSR series. The piano sample on the Kronos is a winner in my book. I cant afford it though. Are we going to a mega sale soon like the ones you do for what seems like way back in the days now lol. @Royalorgans Roland jupiter is a straight of hardware synth. it has knobs and buttons and thats about it. The nord stage 2 is closest to this and it has a better piano. but again there is limited customization of sounds. The thing with the kronos and the oasys line of the korgs is that the sounds can be changed in such a deep way.

Real nice review and playing technique. Question: How convenient is the Kronos for setting a layer list for live performing. I'm used to the "Performance" list on the Roland Fantom X where I can just go one by one down the list of patches I've set down in advance and either play them sequentially or layered on top of each other with keyboard splits, effects etc set for each patch and it's super easy to play live by just going down the list one by one in the middle of a song. Kronos as easy?

the sound may be better. but i heard the sequencer may be suspect compared to yamahas. the korg boards have usually had linear sequencers while yamaha offers pattern and song(linear) modes. i like the option of pattern mode. i love the sound of the kronos, but i may not switch just for that reason. korg and yamaha should update the sequencers anyway. so if you want to record you drums on seprate tracks.

Dear Jamal. I need your opinion. I’m a big fan of Yamaha. After the release of montage which duo you prefer. I have purchased montage 6. Every time I go to the keyboard store to buy a Korg I fall in love with all of the Yamaha synths. I think the memory issue is not problem for sound quality. All the motif line keyboards has superb sound quality over korg stuff. The korg can do is ssd streaming only in Kronos. If you listen krome or kross (pcm based machines) their sound quality is weird. Even mx49 acouistic sounds are better.

I dont want to use all my money on this because i know yamaha and the autour ones will follow up with many similar and better keyboards. But thanks for a good rewiev. This keyboard is indeed brutal, but unfortunately, I still feel more dynamics from Yamaha keyboards even if it's all plastic and cheap sounding lol. Playing Korg reminds me of playing Logic Pro Steinway piano, awesome sound, but not my kind of dynamics. I am a guitar player so I eager for the best expression possible and playing Korg keyboards doesn't cut it dang it (or any other brand for that matter). But ssd's you know they have read and write cycles which over time wear out. So for the short term that ssd seems good, but for the long haul...well i guess korg figured out that by then they would have the say...a new korg berengaria, korg eucalyptus, name it...who knows and you would be running to store to get one.

I always wondered why KORG dropped the ball after the original TRITON years ago .SInce then , Yamaha pretty much took over as far as sounds go . But after this weekend playing that new Kronos , KORG is waaay above YAMAHA now . ALot of players aren't ready for change , in fact , if you go to the guitar center , most people comming in will sit at a MOTIF cause thats what they're use to . It would take some time to master the potential of the Kronos ...

The Rhodes are not even close The XF sounds outside of Pianos and Pads are killing this Kronos. I mean I just got off on my Chick Corea rhodes and can't even play like Jamal (not even remotely close) and almost sound like him on the XF. Wait till Yamaha drops the new motif in 2015

+Wayno Soze i have to go against you, Kronos kills when it comes to rhodes. XF is also amazing, but hand to hand combat the kronos kicks all other keyboards asses and it aint even close. Its the real deal holyfield as a WORKSTASTION, as a sounds keyboard, well motif and nord are worthy of competition.
