I LOVE my Modwave and Wavestate. I'd only let them go to get both versions the rackmounts . And add the rackmount Opsix. Other than that, I think I'm set for a bit. (Edit. I'm impressed , it is *only* digital but the sound quality is superb , my ears detect only slight aliasing when hitting the filter resonance too hard or when going into distortion but otherwise its very clean of the bad nasty stuff. from what I gathered the sound engine is based 98 kHz and can even be doubled for oversampling. The Presets barely scratch the surface. also in terms of comparisons it smokes all the Roland releases and certainly the previous Korg releases, also sound nicer then the Waldorf stuff. Korg have really been doing their homework on this one. a MULTIPOLY and Digitone 2 jam is in order :-)

Nothing new under the sun! This synth certainly has better fx and modulation capabilities than what was around in the 90’s. And the wavetable integration seems to be well implemented. So there’s that. I do like how this sounds judging by the videos I’ve watched so far.

I don't think its particularly nostalgic , its a modern day digital synth , improved over previous generations. Digital synths always had their Pro's and Cons but the MULTIPOLY really managed to reduce most of the cons. sure I would still like to use it in conjunction with an analog synth that can squelch and distort more pleasantly , as these were never among the strengths of whole Digital synths (unless partly analog like with Analog filters and VCA) , but otherwise the versatility it offers is superb and the sound quality is something else (as long as you don't push it to the utmost extreme) lots of digital synth sound fall apart into aliasing hell , but this one manage to maintain its composure.

It seems that the architecture of the Multi Poly shares some similarities to the Radias. The Multi Poly has a newer VA engine, expanded filter and modulation options and the Kaoss engine. I am interested in seeing/hearing a comparison between the two.

A Performance has four Layers (A...D), Kaoss Physics, an Arpeggiator, and a master reverb and EQ. Each Layer contains a Program, and other settings such as MIDI channel, key and velocity zones, etc. A Program includes four oscillators, a noise generator, a ring modulator, dual filters, drive, and amp, plus a Motion Sequence, a set of modulators, a modulation matrix, a chord, and three effects: Pre EX, Mod FX, and Delay." Great video as usual, however I think i've reached a point with synths where I just can't see the point in getting more gear. I've got a bunch of older synths that I need to sell, but my current setup is a MODX7, a Wavestate and a Sequential PRO3. I guess what I am saying is that I can't see the gap in what I can do with my current gear - particularly when I know that I haven't finished exploring any of them to the fullest extent.

@@giquo Great comment. It set me thinking about the psychology of going and getting new gear. I think what I have been doing is sort of like buying on impulse (if I have the resources to do that at the time) as it's nice sometimes just to have shiny new things. I'm also a hoarder so I really have to work hard at moving some of that other gear that I don't use. So that was the basis of my comment - I'm now in a mode where I will try to get the most out of a synth before I move on to something new. I do some stage work with a couple of bands and otherwise it's home studio.

@supercompooper I'm not questioning their reliability. They did have an OLED issue on the newer digital synths that they seem to have done right with by offering replacement. I'm more talking about the feel. Everything is a little plastic feeling and the knobs aren't as satisfying as I'd like on nearly $1000 instruments. I paid $999 for my Matrixbrute. It has a steel case, aluminium mod and pitch wheel, a good keybed, and a large weighty filter knob. I know none of that matters much to the sound, but it sure makes playing it nicer.

The level of source options , filter , amp section ect ... is impressive , people will snob this because it deosn't cost 3 k and don't ahve a Moog / oB / Seq name on it ... i don't even talk about the sequencer ... a sound designer playground , but it still reamions solid in a more classical approach !! Fantastic review, finally I know what this synth can accomplish and the limitations. This may be the only KZbin channel that goes deep enough where I will not make a mistake on a purchase. And purchase this I will...IF.... there is a module option, that small screen needs to be as close the musician as possible, Korg chose to put it as far away as possible. The screen is the ONLY reason I did not consider the ModeWave or ModState, but after the release of the modules, this Korg series have been on my wishlist. Modules elliminate the screen problem of leaning over this synth for hours programming. Actually, this is the Roland JD-800 for 2024 that I wished Roland would have built (and I wrote to Roland asking for). The MultiPoly is a true stereo synth with panned oscillators and a great bonus of parallel dual filters. The 4 mostly independent oscillators (like the JD800) are a powerhouse for massive moving textures drifting in a stereo field. My greatest disappointment with 90% of all synths is all oscillators go through one filter with no bypass and cannot be panned. So, Roland could still build a powerhouse JD-800 for 2024, it would be 61 full sized keys and with all the physical controls that would fit on it, and with 256 polyphony. The MultiPoly is missing lots of physical controls and polyphony for 4 oscillators that must equal 4 voices of poly. And the larger screen right in the front center of the synth please (like the JunoX). Go Roland!! Also with these all text mono-color screens Roland has proved in the Gaia2 that a mouse pad can be done for very fast navigation of that screen.

You never tried the Jupiter-X? Lots of sound controls on the front, similar to but not as well done as JD-800 at that. 4 independent oscillators per patch, no shared filter except as an optional insert effect. Each oscillator can be panned independently as desired. JD-800 is its ancestor. JD-800 is also an ancestor to every other ROMpler Roland later released, like the legendary JV1080 and its numerous descendants, and now there's all the Zen-Core gear. Everything after the early JDs get mod matrices, too, except Jupiter-80 and JD-XA and JD-Xi.

​@@Jason75913 Oh yes, I have looked at the Jupiter, but for all the money it is still a bare -bones physical control compared to the JD. Only two ADSR envelopes, the other three must be switched, no 8 stage envelopes, no LFO or bias in the TVA, TVF and oscillator sections and much more. That step sequencer and arp taking up all the room. And then that tiny screen, again as far from the musician as possible. All the missing controls are in the menu, but that isn't a sound designers synth who loves hardware. I cannot sit back and see what I have sound designed for one oscillator. Even the original Gaia was more complete in physical controls and fast shift points. The Jupiter is a very poor UI, and UI is all about sound design that is fun. I did buy both the Gaia and Gaia2 and JD-08 boutique, I will take what I can get when it is close and not flagship cost! :)

Great video!! I haven’t had a Korg yet. This is definitely interesting but alas it lacks an aftertouch keybed that oughta be at least 4 octaves. What is the deal with not putting the mod/pitch next the left side of the keybed? I think the kaos pad could be bettter placed too. I suppose you will sell more synths at 900 vs 1500 but geez, give us some keys and a proper performance control setup! It does sound really good tho. Korg: could you folks make it with at least 4 octaves with aftertouch and bigger screen and knobs for $1399?

I have no idea which of the other 3 non FM synths to get, but if this one gets sample support, I think Korg can just retire the others. And unless they drop the price of the Microkorg 2 by a lot, this synth blows it out of the water for just a few extra bucks (and minus the nice screen, of course 😅)

Excellent video, as usual! This Multi/Poly might be a sound designer's dream, although, in my opinion, the presets don't show it. They focus on imitating iconic synthesizers of yesteryear. I listened to some of them wihout watching and I could be fooled into thinking I heard real analogue synthesizers. If I were to start my musical carreer these days, I would definitely consider this Multi/Poly (instead of my Poly 800 in 1985) as a first synthesizer. Thank you!

Very nice review, as always! To me this synth is a bit of Modwave, bit of KingKorgNeo, hint of Wavestate. I bought the Modwave 2 months ago, and I was afraid this new synth is something more for me, but hopefully it isnt. Big thanks for the comparaison. It is interesting Multipoly has 4 osc, while Modwave 2 osc x 2 layer. 2 layer in Modwave has a big advantage: I often copy the same layer 1 & 2 hardpan to L & R, use slightly different env / lfo speed phase etc for cool stereo effect, making useful the controls for L&R at once, not like 4 individual. In Multipoly the Layer rotate is a bit like a mini Wavestate: 4 samples in the sample lane :-) I still save my money for the wavestate, but I can imagine there will be buyers who want this bluey. Korg keeps innovation on high level, for our pleasure! All the best from Hungary!

Uli is a bottom feeder, he is also supporting bottom feeders that are backing his products that do it only for clicks. That subculture needs to be avoided and the best way we can do that is vote with our wallets. Korg hasn't done too well with this offering due to the keybed, I mean they're only giving you 1/2 the experience when you consider you get no AT or MPE, bit like the 1st gen WS which I have too. Their SE range is a joke, same UI but weirdly in the middle and that little screen, but want double the $ of the OG units because it has a FATAR keybed with AT? erm no thx.

People have been after me for years to combine my DJ with live keyboard (think Fred Again). I really like the size and weight of the multipoly, both for transport to gigs, and space constraints at gigs. I am a beginner on synths, so ease of accessing killer lead sounds during live performance is important. I have to have the full size keys (not the "toy" synths). Which synth might you recommend I pursue?

However some make music that way and prefer the tactile feel over using a mouse while staring at a screen. Ultimately the difference between analog and digital is going to get narrower as the emulations get better.

Great video. I had the original Korg Mono/Poly back in the 1980s. It was an awesome little device that produced some incredible sounds. Obviously very limited compared to modern devices. But I don't think any of the modern devices can create the lush analogue sounds of the vintage devices. And I really believe the human ear finds the original analog sounds a lot more pleasant. Yeah it's a combination of both - if it's something I really want to play I'll buy it, even if it's expensive (for example the Haken Continuum), I'll also buy inexpensive gear if I think it's popular (e.g. seqtrak); for Nords I've not been able to get even a discount, so it would be too much of a loss to buy one retail just for a video, especially since it's something I won't really use afterwards. Frankly there's so much out there I tend to choose items I think will get more views and interest, or that I just can't resist personally. But I want to get to them at some point when I have free time and if I can get a good price/borrow one.

Ah, the Korg "KAIA 2". Looks nice. I am quite tempted. It addresses some things I wish were on the GAIA 2 such as the ability to upload custom wavetables. And those modulation 'operators' look great. I think the price is reasonable as well. Maybe it could be a hundred bucks cheaper ideally. The only thing I worry about is the keybed. The one on the GAIA 2 is excellent, well apart from the lack of aftertouch. I would be interested to know how the two compare. Awesome review and sounds great!

Thanks! It's a very slightly modified factory patch called Dinosaurs - multiple oscillators in various VA shapes, 2 filters, ring mod, sync, drive, kitchen sink VA stuff :)

Thanks! You can sort of get the same effect with any multitimbral synth using an MPE controller/keyboard, or a MIDI rotate effect (software or hardware like Blokas MIDI hub)

You did a good, thorough review as usual, Ziv, with a lengthy patch playback towards the end. Great stuff 👍 As I heard some of the patches, I kept hearing shades of the Radias and even the oft forgotten R3, its smaller sibling, both of which I owned and used on production and licensing/ sync jobs. Without a deep dive on the Internet, I can remember the radias having a similar bright yet warm sound, and many of the patches were four part (it was four part multitimbral). It's possible the engine on that instrument, which itself had a strong flavour of the MS2000 series (IIRC one of the downloadable patchbanks was an MS2000 bank), was reworked & enhanced for this.

I think this is my next synth. I started into synthesis with a monopoly vst and loved it but there was no hardware reissue that I wanted to buy. And I was interested in the modwave but there was something missing. For me it's a perfect fit of two synths I wanted to buy.

This made me decide to get into the Modwave Native software tonight to explore more. For those that are very familiar with Modwave, what would you think are the main strengths it has to stand against this MultiPoly?

The modwave has (multi)samples, that's probably the biggest modwave feature missing from the multi/poly. I use samples all the time when designing modwave sounds because that's how you get a transient sound at keypress time, and they layer beautifully with wavetables. You can still make passable virtual analogue sounds with the modwave by using the Basic 1 or Basic 2 wavetables (or others) at various positions. As Ziv said in the video, with the modwave you can blend (interpolate) two phase-locked wavetables, which is almost the same as crossfading two oscillators on the multi/poly without the guarantee of phase locking. The modwave has a Polysix modelled filter, apparently missing from the multi/poly, but IIRC Ziv said it's very similar to the mono/poly modelled filter on the multi/poly.

I also had a wavestate and sold it too. Korg knows how to make the operation require a manual. Difficult, ineffective interface, plastic feel, trouble updating, and under the hood - rasbery pi. In multipoly I see the same interface, the same plastic. Then I thought about the people who would bother with this instead of simply buying hydrasynth...

Even though the KingKorg Neo was dismissed in a single sentence (together with opsix) in the comparison section, IMO the parts which do not come from modwave, seem to have been carried over from Neo - especially the filters. Overall the package sounds and looks decent - I like the form factor (for us living in tiny euro/asian accomodations), but I assume that with the supposedly new keybed it will be more expensive that the other 3 RaspberryPi Korgs. For my doodlings modwave module is the answer, but I can see why this would have been a more compelling 1st or 2nd synth purchase than the modwave. Great overview, as always! 👍
