KORG opsix SE Price Drop - Is This The Time To Buy?

What has boggled my mind is out of the trio of 37 key synths that came out, only Modwave didn’t get the full size keyboard treatment, and that was the one I wanted. The addition of the chaos pad thingy made it more of a performance board but was limited by the pint-size number of keys. I was also keen on it as I used to have a DW8000 and the Modwave was described as being a continuation of that board’s lineage and I wanted to regain that in the studio. With the price drop on the other two synths, I likely would have nabbed one here at Christmas bonus time if they had introduced all three full size synths at the same time.

It's $1299 now. That's a much better proposition now. I like the idea of it. Good quality controller maybe and a FM synth to boot.

Hey Matt. Thanks so much for this awesome video 📹. I agree with you about the Korg crazyness! Lol. I have 4 Korg boards and love them all. I did get the Wavestate when it first came out. Ive been loadding it up with after market sounds. Its amazing! Then the new ones came out with the way too high prices. I payed about $700 plus maybe $100 more for the new sounds for the Wavestate 1. So $1200 would be my ceiling on one of the new versions, only if i were able to transfer the aftermarket sounds to the new one. I imagine this is a similar situation your Opsix. It is pretty similar - thanks so much for sharing your experience! I would expect that you could transfer your sounds, but that's just my opinion. And maybe someday we'll see $1200! Thanks again!

Really glad to see you back again with a new video. $1599 is more reasonable, for sure, but I think I'd still want at least another $100 off of it before I'd even start thinking about the SE of either of these two synths, since I have the opsix and wavestate already and I'm happy enough with the regular versions. The addition of aftertouch is really the only reason why I'd think about one of either of these, but current prices are still way too high just for one additional feature.

Hi Matt - value is in the wwallet of the beholder 😊 In the UK it's the same price in £ otherwise your price would be just over £1200 which most folks seem to think is the right price. So, no, it's still vastly over-priced 😱 But what you say about the initial price could be clever Korg marketing - acknowledging that they would piss off early loyal buyers but that doesn't seem to bother them. They dropped the price because it wasn't selling and the way to get it down to a fair level is NOT to buy itt 😊 The original plasticy one is about £420 here - $540. The only extra you're getting is the keyboard and a flight case. I ;love Korg gear but I've lost respect for its marketing department...

This will be an interesting thing to watch develop. I wonder if KORG has damaged its reputation on this synth to the point that people will just not buy it on principle, regardless of price adjustments. Time will tell! Thanks for stopping by, Ian!

Yeah I'm really puzzled by the Reverb exclusive thing, but I also realize I don't understand that side of retail. I'm sure there'a a reason but I don't know what it is.

Thinking about a "main" keyboard for my studio.. I'd say that's about the price range for me (at this point...) I was looking at the Moog Subsequent 37, but that has gone up to $1900... sounds good, but for basically a mono synth (ok they let you split the voices for a 2-note paraphonic) it's a bit much. Guess I should consider this one!

An improvement, but I think there^s still something odd with the pricing. A standard Opsix plus the new Korg Keystage 61 midi keyboard with PAT, are they still cheaper than buying an Opsix SE?

It's just a raspberry pi in a nice shell. That's why no one wants to pay that much. This is not anywhere built like the military grade Z1 or Trinity.

So what if it's a RASPI Module running the show? Any DSP synth is bound to be something similar. That being said, I was one of the lucky ones to get the $320 Opsix, and I have no inkling to get the SE. I'd rather just connect what I have to a decent Aftertouch controller and jam out. It is pretty though

Just a thought… compared to the Behringer UB-Xa, the Opsix SE (with effects, and a hard case) suddenly seems an ok price? I mean, I can’t afford either of them still, but just wondering aloud

Well, I think the OPsix SE, especially its beautiful Platinum Edition is/are still quite overpriced. I've read there's many voices, I guess 80, but still no layers or splits, that's incomprehensive, Even DX7II veritably invited to layer/split almost 37 years ago.

Can you not assign the operators to a section of the keyboard like you can on the original OPsix?

@@WrvrUgoThrUR Key scaling within a.patch is fake multitimbrality. You still don't listen to more than 6 OPs. What a waste concerning 80 voices polyphony. DX1 started with real layering & splitting almost 40 years ago & that with "only" 32 voices, not forgetting the very first (preset) FM monster GS1 from 1981 (layers only).

I think it's a pretty poor tactic from Korg. Way to alienate (potential) customers. You're getting a piece of software that's decades old in a larger keyboard than the £400-something small one? Just buy a DX7, they play amazing. If you just want it for the knobs, get the small one. Or a MODX which has all sorts of other goodies on board. For what they're charging that keyboard better play like a Steinway... yeah they've dropped the price but it's still way too expensive for what it ultimately is imo. Everybody craps on other manufacturers like Roland, but I feel they deliver far better value for money

I gave up my "pre order" at Sweetwater 5 months ago. $1599 is more reasonable. I think I'll put it on my wishlist and see if Korg counter-offers.

even with the price drop, I think the Take 5 is still a little cheaper, which is maybe a better proposition. But, I'll take a drop over a rise!

The expression pedal port is missing! This is inexcusable. Otherwise I'd buy one right now... (I love my Opsix mk1 but the SE version is disappointing.)

According to an inflation calculator, by today's prices I paid 4385 USD for my Wavestation EX in 1992 (around 2000$ at the time). So.. yeah.. synths these days are cheap.

For what it’s worth… I just ordered mine and it was on sale for $1499. Then Korg sent me a 15% off my entire order and so I bought it.

I stick to Dexed, good enough for me. Icw DensityIII for saturation. Some wizards do prefer DensityII.

if they had analog filters maybe? I'm not a keyboardist, I'm a synthesist. So a bigger or better keybed is wasted on me. At $1599-1999 I'm looking at used Waldorf stuff. Or even the Waldorf Iridium Core new.

I preordered the opsix se platinum and wavestate se platinum at full price. Now I sold all my Korg gear and I will never buy Korg again. Sorry but you cannot do that at least in limited editions. I was a loyal customer and now they lost one.
