Thank you for making this video. I was trying to find a way to control my daw's tempo with cv, and now that I watched this video, I found an affordable device to do this without having to buy a random eurorack module for hundreds of dollars. I would just connect a cv pulse signal to the sync in, and then connect the midi out to my interface's midi in and configure the daw to use the interface as a master clock.

I've had one of these for a few years and still use it every week. I knew about changing the resolution in the global parameters and today I came across this gem of a document on the korg website which explains the other parameters. When I connect the SQ-1 via SYNC to the volca, monotribe, or electribe, the sequencers do not advance at the same speed. The SQ-1 lets you change the sequencer's step resolution. If the step resolution does not match the device that is connected via SYNC, the sequencers will not play in synchronization. In global parameter setting mode, adjust the position of the SEQUENCER MODE selector to the appropriate step resolution as follows. • “WW” ALTERNATE: quarter note / SYNC X2 • “Z” ORDER: 8th note / SYNC X2 • ““ PARALLEL TURN: 16th note / SYNC X2 • “=>“ PARALLEL ORDER: quarter note / SYNC X1 • “=>“ CV DUTY: 8th note / SYNC X1 • “=>“ CV SLIDE: 16th note / SYNC X1 • CV/DUTY RANDOM: unavailable • RANDOM: unavailable * SYNC X2 = 1 sync clock advances 2 steps / SYNC x1 = 1 sync clock advances 1 step This is the link to the document i.korg.com/uploads/Support/USA_SQ1_FAQ_Tips.pdf Hope that helps

If you are still finding it impossible to make your SQ1 sequence other MIDI equipment (as I was). Make sure you are using the short MIDI/3.5 cable that come with the SQ1. I was using a different cable, though it also was a MIDI/3.5. It would not work. Once I used the original Korg cable, plugged into a normal MIDI cable, it worked straight away. I guess there are type A, B and no doubt others cables that look similar but not all will work.

@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 2 жыл бұрын
Hello. A couple of things I would try.: First of all, on each channel you will see a voltage range listed underneath the first four buttons of each channel. It should say 1V, 2V, 5V and 8V (hz/V). Each one can be selected by holding on the function button and pressing the corresponding button. The 1, 2 and 5 buttons, will give you a much different range note wise. As in, 1V will give you a pretty limited note range, whereas 5V will give you a much wider range. Don’t use the 8V hz/v! this is hertz voltage and is a somewhat different system, and 8 V might be too much for a Volca. This is reserved for synthesizers like the korg MS 20. Secondly, the next few buttons will be labeled linear, minor, major, and chroma. Again, using the function button, set these to either the linear, for the full range of un-quantized notes, or to chroma to give the same range of notes as a chromatic keyboard. Hopefully this can get you a bit closer. Cheers.

Hi! Ive been looking at buying the Sq1 for a while but I have a question and I can’t seem to find the right answer. I want to use it to sequence my modular rig, however I want to sync the start/stop and midi clock to my analog rytm. Is this possible, if I have the SQ1 as the master and use the midi out? (I know that I can’t do this with the rytm as the master, as then I would need a midi to usb hub to connect to the usb midi port on the sq1, for which I would need a computer I guess) Thank you for the help in advance!
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 ай бұрын
You’re correct in noting that using the Analog Rytm as the master would require more complex connections, such as a MIDI-to-USB hub if you want to connect the SQ-1 via USB. The SQ-1 can only receive MIDI clock and transport control via its USB connection, which would typically require a computer or a specific type of MIDI interface that converts USB to standard MIDI. I do love the sq1 but at the end of the day it really is pretty simple. Good luck though and let us know if it ends up working out!

I've always been really tempted by the SQ-1. Always hoping to find one on a super sale or used, but people seem to like to hold onto them. The Arturia Beatstep has always been tempting, too, but I'm much more attracted to the design of the SQ-1. The Beatstep just doesn't do it for me with that plastic case. But this chunky black thing? Yep, that's for me. :)
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, the build quality on the SQ1 is rock solid. Definitely a big, heavy, chunky thing! I think most of the appeal, other than that build quality, comes in it's simplicity. Press a button? Turn on a step. Turn a knob? Change the pitch. The global parameter settings are not complicated and neither are the scale choices. Apparently the new SQ64 from Korg has similar solid build quality, but I'm a bit weirded out by only having three sequencer channels plus one seemingly dedicated drum channel. I'm so fed up with these companies putting out these sequencers that only do four channels! I got this SQ1 as an open box for $90 which seems obscenely cheap for what it does, but spending $300 and up for only three or four channels just doesn't make sense to me. Whatever though!
@monotronfan1
@monotronfan1 3 жыл бұрын
The only downside is, when used on a midi only synth, you can’t transpose keys from the sq-1. The unit only offsets from C or whatever the root note of the synth is. In a euro or semi modular synth, it easy enough to offset with an external voltage or directly tune the oscillator but on a fixed architecture synth, like a Nord lead for example, it’s almost unusable
@washingtonbertrand5206
@washingtonbertrand5206 2 жыл бұрын
@@monotronfan1 hey! Could you please explain this a little bit more please? Does this happen with the korg volcas?
@monotronfan1
@monotronfan1 2 жыл бұрын
@@washingtonbertrand5206 it does depend on the synth, some have workarounds. Look for any that allow vco’s to be tuned or transposed with either a course tune knob or programming. I do know arturias analog stuff handles midi transposition correctly. If the sq-1 uses the cv gate of the minibrute, for example, any key hit on the keyboard will transpose that sequence for the minibrute. So there may be other synths with an analog/digital interface which can transpose too. But for purely midi (no cv) or a digital synth, the sq-1 will not transpose. It looks like the volca bass has independent vco tunings so that could work, and probably the fm because of the tuning parameters per preset

Unfortunately the SQ1 only has MIDI out. So it cannot accept a standard 5 pin DIN MIDI input. You could go the USB MIDI route, but that means you would need to have everything connected to a computer with the Korg drivers installed and even then I've tried it and performance was spotty at best.

@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 2 жыл бұрын
Hello there! Unless somebody can chime in and correct me, I don’t think that’s possible. I mean, it might be through USB Midi? But certainly not through the regular five pin din midi as that’s only midi out. Again, it might be something that’s possible if you were going out of a computer with USB Midi but I’ve had nothing but problems trying to get the SQ1 to do anything with USB Midi. And I’m certainly not the only one! Korg seem to have some serious problem with having their equipment talk to PCs via USB. So yeah, I have tried what I think you’re asking about and I just could not get it to work. Good luck though, and if you figure something out then let me know here! Cheers.

@thedigitallost 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! And thank you! Unfortunately, I've never had a chance to use the SQ64. It does look really nice though and seems to share a lot of the same spirit as the SQ1 here. Largely, if you're having trouble with MIDI, the idea and connection rules should be all the same no matter what sequencer or other hardware you are using. Most of the time it just comes down to making sure all of your MIDI channels match. I'd be happy to help try to figure it out with you, but it might be difficult for me not knowing how you've got everything plugged in and set up. But again, as I say, 99% of the time problems with midi almost always comes down to having matching MIDI channels, assuming that everything is plugged in to the inputs and outputs correctly.

Just got an SQ1 to use with my OG 70s MS10 which obviously has the 1/4in patch bay…. what kind of adapter will I need for the 3.5mm cables this little guy takes? Can I just use a regular headphone 3.5mm to 1/4 in adapter? Or will that not send the correct volts because the adapter would be mono to stereo or whatever?? I’m sooooooo confused. This is my first adventure into the world of shit like this and it’s kinda really overwhelming lol.
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Try not to sweat it or overthink it! Now, I’m coming at this having never used a MS10. I believe that the MS 10 does not have midi so you don’t have to worry about that at all, I’m going to assume you’re thinking of more CV/gate outputs. There are two things you’ll need to be aware of. First of all, you don’t want a regular headphone cable. The CV/gate outs on the sq1 are TS style plugs which are mono. So you would want to get a 3.5 mm TS to 1/4 inch TS cable. So basically a mono cable that has the small plug in one end and the big plug on the other. Secondly, you MIGHT have to make a pretty simple change on the SQ1. Again, I’ve not experienced the MS 10, but if it’s anything like Ms20, it might be expecting the hz/v signal. See the two rows of buttons on the SQ1? Well, note for both channels A and B, the first four buttons have different voltage ranges. The fourth one is 8V hz/v. this is what you would need to set the outputting voltage to if you were using the MS 20. So again, I need to stress that I’ve never used the MS 10 and maybe it’s different, that’s something you would have to check on your MS 10, what kind of voltage input signal it would be expecting. I believe you just hold down the mode button and then press which ever voltage selection you would need. Hopefully I’m making some sense here! Just double check what kind of voltage signal the MS 10 is expecting and you should be good. As for the cables, once again don’t get a common stereo style cable, just get a 3.5 mm TS to 1/4 inch TS cable and you should be good. The cable, so long as it’s mono and fits, isn’t as important as getting the correct voltage signal going out of the SQ1. Just double check the specs on your MS 10 and it should be good. Again, hopefully this is making some sense but if not feel free to ask any further questions! I’m more than happy to help. Cheers, and good luck!

Actually after sitting down with it for a while and some trial and error I managed to figure out most of what you were saying here, the 8v hz and such, it actually was really easy to figure out. I’m still just using some headphone adapters I have layout around and they seems to work but I did order some proper TS 1/4 to 3.5mm cables to really get it going. Next question tho, I got this thing used for like fifty bucks and it didn’t come with the midi cable thing, what type should I get? The “Type A” right?? Can this thing control a drum rack in ableton? Is it connected via a MIDI port or USB? thanks!

Hello there! Sorry about the delay in reply. I wanted to try it again before I made a comment. So, in theory, what you're asking should sort of be doable?? The problem I find though, is that I cannot get my SQ1 to connect via USB MIDI to Ableton. When I connect the SQ1, Windows makes the little blip bleep bloop blip melody when a USB device is connected, so it's registering, but it just doesn't show up Ableton. There is a Korg USB driver which I have installed an up-to-date version of, but I've just never been able to get it to connect. So sorry, but all I can give you is this kind of non-answer! Sounds like a cool idea though. It's a great sequencer but I just don't have any luck connecting it to my DAW. If you ever manage to give it a go and it works, let me know! Cheers.

You know, I’m not sure! I only have 1 of them, so I can’t try it. I assume you could sync 2 of them together via the sync jacks though. I doubt you can chain them together to create longer patterns though. If I’m wrong, someone let us know! But yeah, just try connecting one to the other via the sync in/out jacks so at least they’ll be in time with one another. Good luck!

Thanks, how about the sq-1 as a midi to cv converter? Would the cv B pitch and gate out be on midi channel 2 if A were on midi channel 1?
@thedigitallost

Hello and thank you! In theory what you’re saying should work, but remember that physical din Midi is only midi out. So you would have to rely on USB Midi from a computer or something. And that opens up a whole lot of frustrating problems. I’ve never been able to get it to work well connected via USB midi on a PC. I gave up long ago! Your mileage may vary.

@@thedigitallost Yup, thanks for the reply. I've been having no end of problems with USB midi from p.c. to eurorack. Got a cre8audio case with a midi to cv converter (supposed) that wasn't even detected as a sound controller on windows 7!? At least I can see the SQ-1! I was hoping to get a pair of pitch and gate outs from vcv-rack software to eurorack hardware. I've tended to stay away from midi because of the endless configuring.

Not by din midi. USB, yes. But I had a lot of problems trying to get the usb midi to accurately and consistently stay connected. Maybe it’s a problem on my end with my gear? But I just kind of gave up trying in the end.

@@thedigitallost Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you try to send clock from your DAW towards your SQ-1 it will stop outputting notes into the DAW or via the midi out and the only way to output is via the CV out. I hope I'm actually wrong because I've been trying to get it to work properly for months.

A quick question or two.. I'm thinking of getting an SQ-1, and possibly a second one eventually, am i correct in thinking if you wanted to use two SQ-1's you could sync their timing by connecting the SYNC "out" from one into the SYNC "in" on the second one?, I would be using Midi, but would want both SQ-1's to be synced together to create two independent 16 step sequences., and would pressing start on the one sending sync start the other one?.. oh and I've sub'd your channel!

If you daisy chaining from sq1, does the ppqn effect both devices the same way or does one need to split the midi out from the sq1 first by using a midi splitter
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 3 жыл бұрын
Really, I believe it should affect both devices in the same way. No need for any kind of splitter.

Hi - enjoying your videos, I have a question re SQ-1midi connectivity... the SQ-1 can run two 8 step sequences but there is only midi connection - how do you connect two midi devices (2 x volca on SQ-1 midi channels 1+2 for example) so as each volca plays an 8 step sequence each? Can this be done? Maybe a midi splitter with each volca listening on each channel would work, have you tried anything like this?
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. And thank you! Absolutely this can be done! There are basic cable only midi splitters available, but I've never used one and I've heard that they can be a little bit sketchy. What I use is the 1 in 4 out MIDI thru box from midi solutions. It takes one MIDI input and splits it into four. The four outputs are just copies of the original single input, but they accept all MIDI messages including the channels that you might have set. I'm not sure if links work in KZbin comment sections, but I'll still paste a link to the Sweetwater website for the exact one that I use: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDIthru4--midi-solutions-multivoltage-quadra-thru-1-in-4-out-midi-through-box Of course the SQ1 only has, at most, 2 midi channels available, but you can just ignore the additional 2 on this MIDI thru box. And then some day down the road, if you have a different sequencer and you want to sequence 4 different MIDI devices, you're ready to go! They are 50 US dollars, but really well worth it. It's well made and works perfectly. Example, I bought this to use with the SQ1 initially to sequence 2 volcas. Now I use this same midi thru box to send messages from a Launchpad Pro, which can sequence 4 separate tracks, and I send it out to four completely different synths. As with all of these things, you have to make sure all your MIDI channels match, be your synthesizers volcas or anything at all. But so long as all the channels match you should be good. I hope this makes some sense! If you do have any questions though, go ahead! I'll try and help. Cheers.

Hello, and thank you! If you are talking five pin MIDI then no; This is only MIDI out. But, you can do in and out with USB MIDI, but you will need the correct drivers from Korg on your computer. Plus I've tried it and it was difficult to get everything going properly so I just didn't bother in the end. I don't know, just things didn't want to talk to one another and I've heard other people having the same problems.

you could try the sync input with sync output from korg volka, volka mix ( that has multiple sync options and tempo readout plus mixer AND basic fx/ compression!!) or a teenage operator or anything else that could convert a midi in sync signal into pulse out sync signal. well thats how i would try it.

While I can to a degree understand Korg being economical in their printing of the manual for much of their gear, it seems a shame that they couldn't make a clearer/cleaner online PDF version that is layed out and indexed better than the one page/all languages fold out map. Their Vocla synths are the same single page fold that technically has all "hidden" bits of info on it but most people are used to manuals that are like books. With chapters, topics and knob/slider per function paragraphs or at least a sentence or two. Aside from that complaint, they do make a lot of cool and powerful, compact pieces of kit.

Seriously. I have owned a few different Korg synths and, since at least the Volcas anyway, they’ve all had that ridiculous roadmap style instruction sheet. Not easy at all.
