Korg Updated The Volca Sample! My Reaction

A tech news video about Korg updating the Volca Sample. Here's my reaction to the news. I've only owned three of the many Volca's (FM, Drum, and Modular). The original Korg Volca Sample had many different shortcoming and the many one was the lack of sample import! The newest iteration has a USB port (thank god) and a few key features that will make it a bit interesting this time around. Leave me know how you feel in the comments!

I’m a guitarist first and foremost, so Boss and other guitar effects have been my thing for years. But, lately I’m into Korg. I got a microKorg, KP3, and just ordered the Volca Sample 2 and getting the Volca Drum. I love the microKorg. I get great organ sounds and symphony and I love the vocoder. And I dig the Kaoss pad. Radiohead to thank for that obsession. And now the volcas. Don’t have them yet, but I need samples and beats to when I’m playing guitar and microKorg solo shows. Thanks for the video. Great stuff.

I just sold my Beats to get the sample 2. Had it for about a week and it was okay but the sample is just way more versatile. Alot of people shit on the Volca Sample but forget how affordable is it.

I use to have the Roland SP-555. One feature I enjoyed was the reverse effect in the effects section. You have the reverse button on the machine then with the reverse effect you get to turning them knobs and come with some very interesting results. I wish they would kept that feature on the 404 sampler series.

as you now a lot about tech what i'm looking for is to create my music i have song completed ie words and the rhythm as i have sung them tried samples but you cant break in to them so i want to create my own so i can sing along i cant play instruments as i'm epileptic and i find things difficult so im looking for an instrument box like i have a daw so would love a drum machine and then instruments so i can create guitar sounds or synth sounds do go with the drums can you suggest anything thanks

Honestly, using the Caustic library editor for the volca sample is pretty nice. Plus, with the pajen firmware, it turns into a really nice lo-fi sample player. I like it quite a bit, but I’m looking for a step up-maybe an electribe 2 sampler or smth

They should have fixed the Electribe. They seem to given up on that mid area of the market against the MPC One, Digitakt, and SP-404 and the Electribe line as a whole to focus on Volcas.

The Electribe Sampler was so far gone lol... I never seen such a terrible sampler in my life.. They could of hired JJ (the inventor of JJOS for AKAI) or Taki (the engineer behind the Roland SP series). Those guys know what they're doing in terms of writing a sampler OS. Outside of that, the synth sounds were above average. I sold mine a year after buying it but it was great for modular jams. Then, I sold all my modular gear too.

Ave Mcree Exactly. A simple OS fix would have made it a hot selling budget sampler, but Korg has just let it die on retailer shelves to this day. It was the worst sampler I ever bought and fortunately returned. A major downgrade from the previous Electribe samplers. They even screwed up the name by calling it the Electribe Sampler 2, when it was truly Electribe Sampler 3.

I like the built in reverb on the Volca Sample. I think it’s more of a beat box than a sampler IMO

hi! i also have volca sample2 ~ but i cannot connect volca sample to volca librarian, and the info. reveals: volca do not connect! And I want to download USB MIDI driver from Korg website, but i can only find the driver support IOS 10.10-10.14, and I failed to install to my Mac ( my MAC ios: 10.15 )~ so can i ask how can i solve the problem?

I just received the Volca 2 today. I was immediately impressed with the sounds and also how easy the sequencer was to use. Very intuitive. I also have the little Korg NTS-1 and sending & receiving samples is the same thru USB so I was familiar with the process. I love that you can sample with the Audio Pocket app with your phone so you can sample stuff outside! I also have the Elektron Model Samples and I like the Korg better because of the ease of use, at least for me anyway. They said The Model Samples was aimed toward beginners but that machine kicks my ass! Big learning curve for me anyway! I’m glad I found your channel! I am subscribed! Love seeing stuff like this! Keep on keeping on!!

I dunno man, it looks pretty sweet. I started my synth journey in lockdown with a PO-32 and a Volca NuBass, but it only took a few weeks for even a total beginner to hit the limitations of the units. After about 3 months I replaced them both with a DrumBrute Impact and a Monologue and I'm much happier with full sized instruments. Though I am on the look out for an affordable sampler to add some spice to my workflow... this could be it.

Mirco usb has some advantages over usb c, like if something will break, micro usb is designed such that the cables wear out rather than the micro usb port itself, usb c doesn't protect the port from wear and tear in the same way. Usb c is really expensive to license per unit so it would add a lot to the cost.

Back in the day... 2 years ago. I'm getting old. Getting samples into the original Volca Sample using Vosyr is not as difficult as some people might say. I use mine mostly as a drum machine (the best Volca drum machine overall, IMHO). There are free samples available from pretty much any drum machine ever made. And since drum sounds are usually short, it doesn't take that long to upload a full kit, even using its archaic transfer method. I just wish Korg had also implemented chromatic playback via MIDI on the Sample 2. The worst Volca is unquestionably the Volca Mix.

So I'm looking into getting something like this but like I can easily do all this with my phone which is way more powerful so maybe I just buy a cheap midi controller like korgnanopad and find out how to program an lcd screen into the x y axis pad.

the fm is my favorite volca. the sample has been solid though. the binary data transfer isnt that bad once you do it a few times. fl studio is better tho :)

They appear the have dumped the possibility to chain up to 16 Patterns into a Song (like A and B variants on an 808). The orig. V. Sample had 6 such Songs. You seem to have program your Patters into a Chain every time you start the V. Sample2. Hmmmmm. And the computer connectivity _appears_ (dunno for sure yet) to be functional *only* w/ special software (like with the orig. V. Sample). So no connecting the thing to your computer and seeing it show up as a (mass storage) device onto which you can copy your favorite samples... 😕 P.S. My orig. V. Sample can hold 100 samples, in theory. In practice its memory was full after 70. So the V. Sampe2's updated amount of 200 slots don't impress me much. On the other hand, the amount of internal memory seems to have been updated too. I'm happy w/ my 70 samples, but if you need more: this may be a welcome update for ya. :)

It still has the same 31.25 kHZ. I had the old one and it was only good for lo-fi type sounds.

Yep. But to keep things cheap they had to omit that. Also, in the past PC's weren't powerful enough to sample, so a sampler had to be able to produce the samples it played back itself. And memory in a Sampler in the 80's was very limited. Last but not least: sampling w/ a computer is easier. Using that same computer as a sample player is not (well, to me at least). The V. Sample holds 100 samples. Chances are you do not want to "sample" more. If you do then this little fun "toy" is not for you I'm afraid. ;)

I wish the pot for the sample selector was the same size as the bass and treble and turned smoothly. It's the one I use the most while setting up a pattern of course, and I feel like (while it's probably well made) it would be the first thing to go. I'm getting a bigger knob to make it easier to use and add some more color to it. Korg could do a better job of explaining things in their manual. KZbin was a much better resource. The librarian software for samples isn't the most user friendly. You have to be really thorough when adding and sending samples or it won't work.

The Volca Sample 1 is great - some limitations - but I think that is the idea - I have owned the Volca Beats before - it's alright... that snare is seriously lacking, okay if paired with another drum source or if modified -

I had the volca keys. ...the biggest niggle of the volca sample is it doesn't direct sample and they didn't fix that so thats why i never got one pity cause they sound good and everything else on them is dope

Korg is that weird family member that you avoid a lot but is sometimes cool. Meh. 🤷‍♂️ Wish they would have kept tabs and updated the taktile series keyboards, could’ve been a contender. Their hardware is hit or miss for me.

Wow, I like my korg sampler, but it’s crap for uploading custom samples. I would’ve love an update that would let you load samples via line in similar to my Po-33. As is the Po-33 is a better sampler, where the Volca sample is more of a glorified drum machine.

Sad, I love the volca;'s. Not enought new features and midi features. The sample is the weakest of them all and I had 3 that both have horrible sample rate or hiss or something going on so I was n3ver happy with th3 sample. Now the Drum and modular are Spot on. Cheer man k3ep us post3d.

Well, OG Volca Sample with Pajen firmware has much more flexibility comparing with Ver2. USB port and twice more memory is not a gamechanger. OG Sample with Pajen firmware can play sample chromatically and have song mode. Nothing like this in Ver.2

Got the VOLCA FM & MODULAR ( cool aesthetics too) ... both fun... would have got the KICK, if it had sound input to use the MS 20 filter....korg are prudish with having sound inputs... plus the great sequencing jump features would be greater utilised with a midi out for other gear... the volca sampler never appealed to me, when you have to go on a world mission just to get a sample in and can’t even transpose by midi.....when KORG make a volca effects.....that is a much needed companion to the range they will get sales from those from people that haven’t got time for a million sync leads and Indiana Jones adventures to get basic functions going without 3rd party utilities.

I have the FM, Drum, & Kick. The Volca drum is my favorite by far, then the Kick. I normally use these with my KORG Kaoss Pad KP3+ and Kaossilator Pro Plus. Checkout my videos on my channel.

Hey man thx ! Answer: I own a Beats, Keys, Bass and now a modular! I have to say the modular is my favorite by far (but least used in recording:yet) , my beat is the most often used (high hats , clap, kick double for existing kick), bass is used with my UNO as an insert, and my keys often used as a drone or melodic stuff however the keys is probably the best sounding of those three (especially connected to a midi keyboard such as my keystep or axiom 49). However for one the Modular just looks amazing lol specially now that I made a dovetail surrounding box for it, it sounds incredible and has so many options its hard to even wrap my head around. I don't think I'd ever really be interested in a sampler that doesn't have any physical inputs. When I saw this I was hoping that would of been the improvement. Can you really call it a sampler, or is it better called a sample player..

lol well the answer is yes and no... Yes, it's a sampler because you can link it to an app and sample. No, because imo a sampler allow a person to chop samples. It reminds me of a lesser version of that Elektron Model Samples

I have both of them, the new 3rd party rom for the korg sample gives you chromatic playback and midi velocity going to have to put it on my volca and cut a video showing off with it.

@@lebronsinclair8012 unfortunately it doesn't and it seems to have been discontinued but it's possible to create chromatic segments on volca sample 2 by loading a series of tuned samples like sampled piano nptes

I've owned all the Volcas apart from the Nubass, Kick and Mix which were obviously shit and not worth buying in the first place. My favourites are the Drum, FM and Keys. I'm currently getting my head around the Modular. My least favourite is, by far, the Sample which I had to sell on because of shitty connectivity. It took longer to transfer samples than the sample capacity of the dumb machine. The Volca Sample V2 has usb connectivity but it still relies on proprietary transfer software and still regards PC/non-IOS users as an after-thought. If one needs an Ipad to transfer samples, why not simply use a sampling app on that Ipad and not bother with the dumb Volca drumpler? If the Volca Sample appeared on one's computer as a flash drive then it would be a lot more usable. afaic, Korg have only released the Sample V2 to spite Retrokits who had been eking out a little business with their solution to the shortcomings of the OG. Korg did this once before when they deliberately timed the release of the Volca Mix to sandbag the Kickstarter Vixen mixer project. Does Korg even have a RnD department? The shortcomings of each of the Volcas were glaringly obvious and should have been addressed prior to the og models' release without bringing out mk IIs.

Just got the sample 1 earlier this week and I'm gonna have to return it since it's completely useless when recording into your DAW. Makes WAY too much background noise. I hope that's something they've fixed with the newer version.

Yes, recording track by track does add up too much noise. BUT volca does sound fkn banging. In fact its layout is almost the same as simpler in ableton (the best drum sampler in my opinion), everything is there. The problem is managing different Vosyr projects for different sounds. Also almost no way to backup patterns, so I tend to work with vsample as an impulsive instrument. Also take a look at Pajen's FW. It changes the instrument completely!

Sample 9 and 10 (or "Part" 9 and 10 as Korg calls them) are the choked ones (meant for open and closed Hi Hats). :)
