I have this setup too and works great. I'm getting an Arduino to transform the velocity from Beatstep Pro's drum track into the level of the Volca Sample 2. Let's see how it goes.

That would definitely enhance the dynamics and add a super human feel. What I’m dreaming of would be turning the bsp control track into a cc modulation sequencer maybe via Arduino. That the bsp pots sends the signal and the duino records and sends that cc info to the volca sample. This would open up a lot of possibilities. 😁👍

Great tutorials, well presented and explained. Can you do some more Volca related stuff (ie using it with other gear etc). They are very popular/versatile synths. There (even a few years on) aren’t that many good tutorials out there. I think 🤔 they way you present facts and information is really spot on. I mean even the manufacturers own presentations aren’t that hot. I hope to see you channel grow massively. You deserve that. I have various synths, modules, effect pedals etc and can use them all competently on their own. But getting everything connected up and humming together is just darn right confusing. From the comments I have read from lots of different channels. I am not alone.

Hi, the midi channels on the volca sample 1 are fixed from 1-10. Volca sample 2nd generation can be set to individual channels or classic 1-10. Hope this helps

@@rocha_ethereal if they don't communicate at all then I would check how the midi or cv cables are connected so that at least they start / stop at the same time. If they do, then you can change the cc numbers in the arturia midi control center. Sometimes other values worked for others. For example CC 1-10 or 11-21..and so on. The numbers in the video worked for us.

Finally, after hours and hours I managed to make it work, I had to go to the Global settings (pressing the Func button and turn it On) and then turn On the Midi RX Short Message (Step 7), then followed your video again and everything is working perfectly now. Thank you for your help!!!

Hey, there is only one clumsy workaround that is totally impractical for the VS 1, using the mod track via cc in the software. We tried it once, but just left it alone. Yes, it´'s definitely an issue with the volca sample, not the beatstep.

@@havijergarcic6227 have you tried changing the settings(midi ch and cc) of the first 4 bsp pads to the ones that the last 4 pads have and then for the next pads just change the cc(for example: the bsp pads that trigger samples on the kvs2 have cc 40 41 42 43 and ch 5 so you configure pad 1 of bsp to cc 40 ch 5, pad 2 cc 41 ch5, pad 3 cc42 ch 5, pad 4 cc 43 ch 5, pad 5 cc 44 ch 5, pad 6 cc 45 ch5, ....)

@havijergarcic6227 ok, you own the volca sample2 you can try to use the singel channel mode. This routes all steps to one midi channel. Press Func while power up and see if step 10 is lit or not. This is the option to enable disable single channel midi mode.

I have a strange problem with my volca sample+bsp, the midi channels are mapped 1-10 and the volca respond accordingly, however the sounds are played much slower or transposed way down on the volca sample, when hitting the pads on my bsp. any clues? The "snare drum " sounds like a "long explosion", when triggerd from the bsp.

Have a look in the midi control centre and double check if the midi channels are all set up and play around with the cc values. Look at the cc values of the 4 channels that work, and from there, 10 numbers will work. We got reports that the cc numbers somehow vary.

You would have to use the control mode on the bsp. And set the values to the cc Vol in the midi control center. Don't have them in my head now. But there is a nice volca sample midi implementation chart online. There you find all CC values that can be used. But keep in mind that unfortunately you cannot record the values. The bsp control mode is only for live / Realtime tweaking.

thank you so much! HUGE WARNING! Midi control center, the newer versions are packed with trojans on the official website! my antivirus caught it and did proceed with usb driver install(shame they do not provide the file itself), after it i removed midi control center via uninstall in program files, the drivers stayed.. then i used to install some 1.2.2.429 and it worked ok. other versions did not see the beatstep pro connected.. hope this helps others!

Hope it was just a false positive. Most drivers that are not Microsoft signed get flaged. Glad that in the end, it worked out.

The parents firmware seems to be awesome, but it did not match our workflows so we never used it after testing it. I saw something like what you have in a thread on gearslutz.com. you might want to check that

The volca sample uses midi channel 1-10 so your left with 11-16 that you can set/use for the sequencer. I use midi channel 12 for my moog and 13 for another synth.

Yes, the bsp becomes the sequencer. You trigger the samples from the kvs. Just make sure the pattern on the kvs is empty to minimise headache 😅

What would you like to map? On the control track you can map cc messages. The volca sample midi implementation chart helps to find the right cc you need. Only issues is that you can't record the cc motions on the beatstep pro. 👍

@@MoabitWedding Thanks for the reply. I had assumed that the knobs would be able to configure based on the selection of the Sequencers and Drum and could then be different in that context. I realized now that I could only map using the Control Mode and that means that not all knobs on my 3 volcas can be mapped to Midi commands on the BeatStep. One can use the Midi User channel to control each of the Volcas but you get limited to the 16 knobs where the volcas has something like 30 or so. Some are the same Midi command but the usage of them is quite strange. I will send that as a feature request I think :-)

Unfortunately not. They only included this into a firmware update for the beatstep pro. For the keystep you might want to try the retrokits.com cables. They have internal mapping.

Could you maybe upload screenshots from all your midi control center settings to imgur or a similare website? I copied all the settings you mentioned, installed the pajen firmware and tried pretty much everything I could but no matter what I do, my BSP just doesn't want to communicate with the KVS in any way. The pads don't work, the play button doesn't start anything... When I use another external midi keyboard I can atleast play the sounds with the pajen firmware (on channel 11).

MIDI ports set to usb&midi.

Hi @Moabit Wedding, Great tutorial!! I am pretty new to this setup but good with midi generally. Have Bsp with latest frimware and Kvs 2 and 2PPQ setting. The midi from the Bsp is sending ok as i can speed up the tempo etc but the sample parts dont trigger off the pads. When i press play on the Bsp the Kvs2 just starts playing its own sequence on channel 1, how do you toggle between 'external midi' mode and 'internal / local mode' on the Volca 2 if there is such a thing? Hi, the pattern on the kvs2 should be erased. If the samples are not triggered when pressing the pads on the bsp change the cc numbers in the midi control center. That can be a little try and error step. Try starting with cc5, cc15, cc25. It should be 10 cc numbers in row to trigger the samples.

Absolutely, use sequencer 1 and 2 for the synthesizers and the drum track for the volca sample. Your right it will work with a midi thru box. That's hassle free. You could daisy chain your midi gear via midi in and outs. But in the long run a compact midi thru box helps.

The elektron digitakt is a wonderful sampler. Using it daily and it also became my go to sampler. The bsp helps me with daw and eurorack connectivity for different setup or when I'm in production mode. Enjoy and share your jams with us once your all setup.

Hi, zu 100% kann ich es nicht beantwort. Da ich keinen bs zum testen habe. Ich habe kurz in die Gebrauchsanweisung geschaut und es sollte möglich sein. Da der vs2 den single channel Modus hat. (Einstellungen step10). Die CC, glaube ich sind 48 - 57 = Part 1 - 10.

Plug the mini TRS to midi adapter in the Midi out ouf the Beatstep pro and connect it with standard midi cable to the midi in of the Volca Sample. Or better, plug the cable in a midi multiplier first to be able to sequence more instruments than just the Volca Sample.

You can map encoder via CC values. On the official website, there is a midi implementation chart with the numbers you will need to assign. But keep in mind you can not record the encoder automation. Bsp has no mod track.

Even though there is the new Keystep Pro out, that is basically the beatstep pro and keystep upgraded into one device, I still find the drum programming super nice on the beatstep pro. That tactile hands on experience is what I enjoy most. Guess it does remind me of the big trigger pads on the mpc2000xl 😁.

@@MoabitWedding na da het der Anfänger ja mal wieder schön ins Fettnäpfchen getreten, ich wusste nicht mal, dass es Polymeter gibt und dachte, du hättest dich einfach 2x versprochen. So also darf ich jetzt wegen dir n Midikabel löten und auch noch auschecken , was der Unterschied zwischen Polymeter und Polyrhythm is :) *schäm* Wenn Andrew Huang das jetzt noch auf deutsch erklären würde, wäre das echt dufte ^^ (Ich frag mich übrigens, wie oft er wohl schon als Huangsohn beschimpft wurde :) , boaah, der war soo flach ey :) )

Ja, ich hab das auch erst durch ein Video gecheckt. Beim Polyrhytmus sitzt die "1" immer gleich, die grooves verzahnen sich auch immer gleich. Beim Polymeter verschiebt sich die Lage der beiden "einsen". Beispiel: loop 1 ist 16/16 lang, loop 2 15/16. Jede Runde verrutscht der zweite Loop im Verhältnis zum ersten um 1/16. So verschiebt sich die Verzahnung. Sehr easy zu machen und super effektiv. Besonders mit dem Beatstep, wo man beim Drumsequencer jeder Stimme ein eigenes Meter geben kann.
