It's also entirely possible I could have overthought it, and I'm wrong. Translating's fun that way. To be fair there was also a person or two saying "you ate them?"

Yes, that's about what thought process I imagined you went through :) I can't speak for the commenters, but the main problem I see with it is that that "reciprocate" meaning of 返す is almost always (afaik always) restricted to more abstract things such as your example 恩を返す, or, say, 言葉を返す, rather than physical things such as 指 or 一口. For example, you might think a getting a present is one of the most natural things to reciprocate by giving a different present in return, but if you google プレゼントを返す the results are all about people returning the gift back to the sender or the store.
