I mean Jordan would go out to dinner with guys like Barkley right before kicking their ass on the court. He had no problem being your friend and then turning off that friendship and being 100% full competitive mode once on the court. It was the coaches, like Barkley's coach at the time, forbidding him from eating out with Jordan or anyone else they were playing against, saying "no fraternizing with the enemy." So yea, that attitude existed back then, but it seemed more the coaches that wanted to force that type of mentality than all of the players. Sure, some players wanted it that way too, but it seemed like the reason that era was like that (aside from the different rules to the game itself) was the coaches forcing that type of air to the situation.

Because they were the standard. Chicago's mindset: If we're going to get the finals and win the title, we're gonna have to beat the Detroit Pistons. It was the championship for the Eastern Conference. The years of disapointment and frustration finally come to an end. They went back probably during 1990's offseason and looked at film what they'd have to do to get a series victory against their bitter eastern conference and central division rivals.

What I love most about this game is that even though it wasn’t a strong game overall for Jordan, he started it off so fiercely and boldly, keeping the Pistons so off-balance and on the ropes, that the rest of Bulls were inspired to follow suit. Especially Pippen, who was an absolute gunfighter in the 3rd quarter, and the bench, who definitely weren’t playing scared as they had in the past. My favorite moment is Hodges’ key three-pointer to put the Bulls up by 9 in the 4th quarter. The crowd just goes bananas; there was no doubt from that point on that the Bulls could take anything the Pistons threw at them.

Of course they could. If they grew up in that era they would have adjusted like all great players do. It's like when people say Bill Russel couldnt have dominated if he played in the current era, but forget the fact that if he grew up in this era he would train like the athletes today and would have grown up with the same nutrition and environment like players ttoday. he would be like Anthony Davis but with tim duncan smarts and leadership and he would've have dominated.
@boogieloo18318 жыл бұрын
zeebuggy - I hear this argument all the time - better nutrition today. What are you thinking, that 1990's America is a third world nation. Nutrition was at its peak long before today in America buddy. The minimal advances in perhaps in Sports medicine is the main difference and not much of one.
@zpacify8 жыл бұрын
You're just splitting hairs. The point is players would develop differently depending on which era they grew up in because of advancements in sports science and preparation.
@boogieloo18317 жыл бұрын
zeebuggy - no I'm not splitting hairs and you have no idea what you're talking about. America was an incredibly sophisticated nation in the 90's and ur a fool to think that players back then suffered from some lack of nutrition. This is the most moronic idea ever that comes fron generalizations made by media. The only difference is there is greater cultural concentration on weight training but plenty of athletes in MJ's day lifted. Still, it's not teams pushing this - it's up to individual players during the off season to develop physically and in terms of skills. Go look at players on teams today from top to bottom - sorry but not everybody is built like LBJ. Furthermore, the leagues is littered with 18-20 year olds that are puny and there are too many little guards today - the NBA is smaller than it's been since the 60's. But this is largely irrelevant. Today's players have the luxury of using athleticism because of the space they have whereas in the past, you could not drive a crowded middle and you could not jump over 7 footers. What is relevant are the on court conditions and it is simply so much easier to score today. There is a reason why scoring increased dramatically in the '04 - '05 season - rule changes and changes in foul interpretations. This isn't debatable - it's documented even on the NBA website.

It was the triangle offense Phil Jackson installed. By preventing the Pistons from easily double teaming Jordan, combined with the league changing the flagrant fouls rules in 1991, Jackson was finally able to get the Bulls over the hump. Doug Collins swung players to one side of the floor to give Jordan space to work with, but the triangle is what gave Jordan the easy out (pass to Pippen or a spot up shooter like Paxon) when double teamed. If the Pistons had been able to run zone defense like the teams do today (anything but man to man was illegal defense at this time), the Bulls likely wouldn't have made it to the Finals until after Isiah retired. Jordan wouldn't have been able to make it into the lane as easily. See the New York Knicks during the Phil Jackson era if you want to see that proof of concept in action.

On top of that, they whined and cried whenever someone retaliated and whenever they lost (walking off the court without congratulating the Bulls when losing this series). And what is worse is looking at the Bad Boys documentary and Open Court on NBA TV and hearing Isiah make up these lame reasons for why they didn't congratulate the Bulls and complain about the fallout from how they played the game. At least some of them own what they were and you can some what respect that. But overall as a fan of the game, I have very little respect for their titles.

Well, 1990 and 1991 were the first years the Bulls and Pistons could be looked at as equals. Prior to that, Jordan was waiting for Pippen and Grant to develop while the Pistons were already a championship-caliber team. One thing is for sure, it was one hell of a rivalry.
@realone74052 жыл бұрын
It was a one sided rivalry for sure in favor of the DETROIT PISTONS.

These were games, the crowd, the defense, no bullish calls, trash talking, the intimidation factor, the rough play, I would love to see today's star go through this!

Because what he doesn't seem to understand is this: Michael Jordan, once he took the punishment the Pistons gave him, became even stronger and, in this case, unstoppable. The Jordan Rules did not so much knock him down as they forced him to grow up. A painful process, yes, but it taught him to trust his teammates, to play even tougher and smarter basketball. The Pistons' 'job' was to prevent him from winning games, but they could not sweep him in a single series or keep him away from a title.

And a historic one too. It had great ramifications for both teams and the NBA.

Jordan was always competitive but he was homicidal this year to beat the pistons.

You can say that the pistons made Jordan better. The "Jordan Rules" made Michael Jordan use his teammates more, pass more. It also made Pippen better, he became more mature and more focused. The rest of the Bulls were inspired to play better they gained the confedence to win.

Detroits game plan was just to agitate and distract jordan. But the bulls are so physically strong and focus during that season

This was classic true basketball. They let these play. Mike was task talking, Scottie was trash talking, and so was Rodman and Aguirre. Let them talk, let them play, and let the best team win

It still feels like the Bulls should’ve had the Pistons number a year earlier in 1990. Because by ‘91, Detroit didn’t stand a chance.

I was at the 1990 game 6 home game where the bulls won to push it back to Detroit For a game 7 and we went on to lose it. The Game 6 Night of which I was there for was mini-bull horn night. So, Im up in the rafters and I was yelling to my dad sitting right next to me with it and he still couldn't hear me say I need to go to the bathroom. That place was so loud. The loudest sporting event I have ever been to, to this day.
@gregoryrowlerson84573 жыл бұрын
Nah, Pistons still won more games in '90, and no team lost at home, so home court advantage was the deciding factor.

This was the most intense I've seen MJ in a game. He was trash talking all game, they finally owned the Pistons. The beginning of a SWEEP.

Jordan played among the all time greats, which set the stage for him to be named the greatest of all time. I cannot fathom how anyone can say that Kobe Bryant is on the same level. Kobe is just another imitation, he owes his entire game to Jordan.

This video saddens me ... it was the beginning of the end of Isaiah and the Bad Boys era... as being dominant and the only team to consistently contain Jordan. They never get enough credit they were nasty physical and I miss this type of NBA. I can barley watch today’s NBA because it’s that bad.

2:57.. This is the first and only Jordan attack in the paint where there wasn't a fouled called.. It honestly looks like Isaiah thought he was called again for another foul and didn't hear the whistle b/c of the crowd cheering.. Does anyone know know the highest point scorer in the NBA, excluding free throw? Much props to that guy..

Everytime I see a Knicks game these days I'm wondering how Isiah can stay that calm on the bench. It's like the Knicks of today are the antithesis of his old Pistons team. It boggles the mind, with the knowledge, experience on a championship team, how can you assemble a squad like that? I think part of his pleasure in beating the Bulls comes with his background as a native of Chicago and the fact that Jordan in a way took his place when he entered the league.
